Getting a Yorkie this sunday! I'm getting a 10-11 week old Yorkie this sunday and I'm really excited but also scared! It's my first dog and I'm scared of screwing up. I've been waiting to get a dog for a long time and I decided that it's a good moment to get one since my 3 Week long spring Vacation starts on Friday but I will be doing some things this weekend so I want to make sure that I have all my attention onto him. I've learned that I need to get them to pee outside at least an hour for every month they have during the day and a bit about potty training generally speaking. I'm just wondering, will I be able to go out with him during these three weeks? I've read that they shouldn't go to parks during that early age because they may catch some illnesses, is that true? When will he be able to go out safely? Does that apply to my dogless garden too? Also, if I can go out with him, will it affect the potty training? I plan to go out sometimes to friend's houses that live close to me and hang out, I imagine some socialization at that age would work for him too. Also, what should I buy before getting him home, should I start directly with the crate?

| Congratulations and welcome to Yorkie Talk. Safety of taking a pup outside: some people say not until the pup has all of the puppy vaccinations, others say just be careful and limit the area where your pup goes. Other dogs are the main concern, but wild critters also carry disease and can spread it by urinating and eliminating in the yard. Taking your pup to friends' houses: keep in mind that puppies, especially really little yorkies, need plenty of rest and should not be over-handled, which can lead to hypoglycemia. Have something on hand like Nutrical or white Karo syrup to put a little dab on the gums if necessary. Also, be extra careful with who handles your pup. Many have been dropped and suffered broken legs and more. Last but not least, be wary of what might be on the floor or in your pup's reach at your friends' houses. Not everyone's homes are puppy proofed like yours will be. Potential hidden dangers: electrical cords that can be chewed, a dropped medicine pill or an earring or piece of gum. Potty training: it is perfectly fine and advisable for you to go outdoors with your pup. Get him accustomed to key words like "go potty." When he goes, praise him profusely, "Good Boy!" Show him how happy you are (without scaring him ). Give him a tiny little treat each time. You are correct that another key to success is to give him ample opportunity to go potty in the right place and that means plenty of trips outdoors. Crate: if you plan on using one, yes, start immediately. All training is easier the earlier you start. The more a pup experiences early in life, the better off he will be. Post pictures when you can. Best wishes!

Thank you for your replies! I was thinking about getting a cage and I can't decide wether to get one of these: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/att...1&d=1332966532 Which can be folded and has those nice blinds or a Hard shell plastic one. I wonder if this one could get stinky after some time, especially since it's probably better for transportation than crating

Congrats on your new baby!!! A baby's playpen workd well for young puppies too. You can almost always find them at flea market, yerd sale, etc. Clean it really well then you can put a pee pad on one side and little bed or blankie and toys on the other. That way you know he isn't getting into trouble while your eyes aren't right on him. My other advice is to enjoy him, don't worry too much, and give him lot of lovins'

Here he is!!! He arrived yesterday to my home and he is so cute!!! He is bigger than expected, it's not a toy Yorkie and he already kind-of understand where to pee. I guess he got potty trained at his previous home with his family. The next vaccination he should take is this saturday and he's not allowed to go outside till then. I attached a picture of him

How exciting! He is absolutely adorable!! You will have many years of wonderful times with your new devoted and loving baby! I like to recommend "Yorkies for Dummies" and "Yorkshire Terriers: Smart Owners Guide" as two great books that have tons of great helpful information that you can use the entire life of your baby!
