| ohhh the poor little guy, so sad that someone would neglect his teeth that much. I am so happy you were able to rescue him and give him the care and love he needs. I will PM you the info of our meetup group. The April one happens to be at my home in Waterford, perhaps Louie will be feeling good by then.

Owned by a Yorkie? No ! Really? Hee Hee...aren't we all !!! Get used to it!!! It's part of the fun! ![]() As for the work, when there is so much to teach them, I just start by doing everything as consistently as possible...rather than working on specific 'formal' training for more than one command at a time...and practice, practice, practice 'cuz repetition and consistence are key elements...treats, toys, love help, too, depending on what he likes. You have to condition yourself as well as conditioning them. But... Yorkies are so smart that I don't think you'll find it that troublesome, especially after the first command ("trick") is learned. Brody was 14 months old when I got him and he hadn't been taught a thing. What he knows now amazes me, even though I've watched, taught, and helped him learn it. The things I worked on were, of course, getting a regular outside potty routine going, and getting him to reliably "Sit" on command...you could see the little light go on when he "got it" and realized he'd learned a "trick"...he soooooo wanted to do more, and more, and more, and he is doing absolutely wonderfully with both...he's been with us for 10 months now, and Mia's been with us for 7 months...she was 17 months old when we got her. Mia was better trained...or maybe just better at some things...like coming when called and staying with us...walking on a lead she definitely had experience with, and she was crate trained, although I do not crate her during the day. I truly believe you will have so much fun with your new baby that none of it will seem like work...just love !!! Hope everything goes well with his dental, and congratulations!

| Welcome to YorkieTalk!! It does sound like you will have your work cut out for you, but it will be worth it. Poor guy, I cannot believe his previous owner neglected his teeth so much... I'm glad you are getting him the care he needs.

| Grats on the Yorkie. Like everyone else has said, you do have your hands full, but the good news is it's worth it. The dental part may not be fun, but if that's it, then it should be down hill from there. When we got Bailey he'd never been on a leash. The 1st few times we tried his harness, he hated it. He'd run in the other room. Now he can't wait to go on a walk. While he can't step in to the harness, he knows the routine and off we go. Time is your friend here. A 3 year old Yorkie should be loads of fun for you and your family. Pretty soon you'll be wondering who adopted whom! |
