Hi Yorkie lovers..I'm a newbie here. :wavey:Hi All! I am a new Yorkie owner, or well, really he owns me at the moment! Louie is 3 years old, 3 pounds and we are getting to know each other. I don't have any experience with this breed. This is a new adventure for us. I have loved canines all my life and have always had a forever furry friend, but like I said, I have a lot to learn. We adopted him about two weeks ago. Already we are having problems. He is scheduled for dental surgery in 10 days:confused: His previouse owner said she never gave him chew bones or hard treats, he has never worn a collar because she walked him in a stroller and he wore a belly band (I have never seen or heard of it before) all the time, so he had diaper rash and was never house broken. I have my work cut out for me ..right? |
Hi there welcome to YT!:D There is a wealth of knowledge here. I have always walked Georgie using a harness and it was a lot of work but he is house trained. I found that rewarding him with praise and treats works well. Georgie was our first Yorkie and I will tell you though you are in trouble....once they get you wrapped around their paws it's all downhill from there LOL. No really it's awesome to be loved by a Yorkie!;) |
it will be watching him like a hawk and keeping consistent with the potty training. once they get it and have it down its uphill from there. treats..find something he goes nuts for to reward him for only when he potties. are you using inside potty pads might be eaiser for his size. as far as the collar i would suggest a harness especially with how small he is you dont want to hurt his trechea or neck. poor baby with diaper rash. so glad you are giving him a furrever home. =*(()) |
Oh bless you for rescuing louie , it sounds like he really needs you. I think you will have to be really patient with him , especially with the housetraining. Yorkies are so smart , he will catch on.. |
Welcome!! |
Welcome! Potty training will be hard at first, my little Henri took a while to train, but if you keep at it he will learn. I would give Henri a small treat every time he did his business outside and that worked pretty well. Good luck with your new yorkie! |
Hi there and welcome, it is wonderful that you have rescued this baby. |
Welcome! I'm new to the yorkie breed as well, Bentley is 16 weeks old now and I'm so sorry I waited so long in my life to get one! good luck on the potty training! we are no where near potty trained at our house LOL |
congratulations I bet he is a cute little guy, the owner sounds like she pampered him so why did she give him up. I hate to say it but it does sounds like you will have your work cut out for you because what you have is a dog that was not taught to be a dog. Yorkies do tend to need a full dental every year and the less dry food and milk bone type things they chew the more likely they are to have bad tartar and loose teeth at each dental. You should start brushing his teeth after the dental. Get liver or chicken flavored dog toothpaste at the pet store and a child's tooth brush. As for walking on a leash, first get a light weight harness and a thin leash that he does not feel much. You could leave it on him in the house during playtime so he gets use to the feeling of wearing it. After a few days start by having someone hold it, while you are a few feet away with a treat, when he comes for the treat the person holding the leash should advance along with him, if this seems to be working, try to move further away each time. Then start doing this outside, another trick that helped one of my reluctant leash walkers was having him follow behind a dog walking on a leash. So if he likes other dogs perhaps you could find a neighbor with a dog that would be willing to take their dog out and you can place your dog about 6 feet or so behind and see if he wants to follow. As soon as he gets the hang of how fun and interesting walks are he will be loving it. the Potty training will be hard so patience will be a must, and you will need to decide between having him go outside or on a pee pad. Once you decide then there will be a lot of people with helpful suggestions BTW I am also in MI, and in a meetup group with lots of other yorkies, where is North Branch? |

Thanks everyone, I will use all the info and greatly appreciate it :) Louie's teeth are so bad he has to be on antibiotics for 2 weeks be fore they can do his dental. They will have to pull a few. Our Vet had me look at his gum and she pushed on it..puss gooshed out. That does explaine him not wanting to play, like at all! But now he actually started to play and even licked my face. I know if I had a mouth full of "ouch" I would not want to play either. North Branch is in Lapper county Donna, I would love to be involved in your yorkie group:) |
OMGosh! He does need a dental, poor baby! Oh, Hi and Welcome to YT! Training him will be a breeze...once his health is looked after and he's feeling better. He'll be so much happier with you I'm sure!:D |
