| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I'm sure there are some great groomers out there, but I never happened to run into one (unforch). Wylie went to 3 different groomers as a pup, and then never ever again. Marcel and Pfeiffer have never been to a groomer. We do them all at home. To me, grooming looks pretty stressful for many groomers...and I don't want my kiddos w/ a stranger while having to endure something stressful like grooming (which we can do instead, at home). The blow dry boxes really freak me out too.

| I used to get Callie groomed at petco and its not cheap. All petcos are not the same there are good groomers at some and bad groomers as some.

| ♥Trained by my pups♥ Donating YT 500 Club Member | i have watched to many groomers and i don't care for how they treat the dogs. Yes they have to be careful as some do not like grooming. I chose to do it myself and as one member said it may not be grooming more like chopping but i love the way they look and its all on me. I am lucky mine just let me do it I do not have to have any kind of restraint on them. they just look at me as to say you done yet.

| I hate stories like this because it makes people afraid to go to a groomer. There are alot of good competent groomers out there. And yes some of them are at Petco and Petsmart type of places. My groomer has her own place and I have had her groom my dogs for 6 yrs without incident. My yorkies love her and she goes out of her way to make her dogs comfortable. One thing she does with mine is Jewels doesnt like to be separated from Chachi and will bark so she has her assistant hold chachi up to the table while she grooms Jewels so that pacifys Jewels. She also will keep them for me if I need her to when we go on vacation

| I haven't had any incidents at Petsmart grooming. How can they do horrible things like leave them alone, when they are in full view through a big window? All the one's by me have big windows and you can see them all being groomed. No telling what they do while they bathe them, but you can watch them be shaved, cut, etc. Knowing that someone can walk by at any minute probably helps. |

| We tried Petsmart once because our other grooming lady wasn't doing GREAT with Bailey; and for the money I was paying, it should have been perfection. So we went to Petsmart and everyone seemed nice, but the groomer was very very young maybe 20, but that doesn't matter. And they caged dryed her which Bailey can't stand because she likes to cuddle when she gets dried. Finally, they kept her there for 4 hours plus... and we ended up paying $70 for a groom... a plain groom. We're trying a new groomer this weekend. Went on yelp: 5 stars from everyone, and only $25 a groom no matter what... hey, worth a shot! |

| Sophie Kate gets groomed at Petco, she has for the last 3 years and I have never had a problem. I took her there one time to fix a horrible cut by another groomer and I was so impressed with how they treated the dogs. Some of the questions I asked were: 1. Where do you keep the dogs who are not being groomed? They took in me into the area where they kennel them, showed me how they sanitize the kennels after each dog. 2. Do you use a drying oven (that is what called, not sure the technical term). They do have one, but it is set at 68 degrees and it is not really an oven but more of a cage with air blowing on them. I asked if by request they would use a hand dryer (they will and do for Sophie Kate). 3. I asked the groomer who I use about her grooming experience. She is the Manager of the Grooming area, has 20 years experience. I did stop short of asking for references, I figured if she was going to fix the bad cut I could gauge it from there. I will say my experience appears to be one of the few people on YT who has had good luck at Petco.

| I guess they would need pictures and a vet report to win their case. I wouldn't be shocked if it were true. It's difficult to find a good groomer these days. I guess I shouldn't be so upset that it was only Gracie's topknot that got hacked off! |

| After Princess had her vulva nicked by a "butcher groomer" (<--I call her that due to the way she cut the hair actually) and I wasn't even told, I wouldn't put anything past anyone! After months & months I have come around to trying a new groomer & I actually do like her. Princess was terrified to even go in there & the whole time the groomer and I talked (a looong time ) she shivered in fear. But as soon as she put her hand on Princess to caress her face Princess stopped immediately. Also, when she was clipping her belly a time before Princess was so relaxed she almost fell asleep!I was livid with the first one & would rather Princess look like a rag muffin with me grooming her myself. In time, and lot's of research and online review reading, as well as visiting with the groomer several times before, (it's a boutique, too), I decided to give it a shot. To each their own, but try not to lose all faith forever if you don't want to groom her yourself. The right one may just come along. Just like in human medicine, or a restaurant or anything some are better than others. And some are much worse.

| I think you can get a bad grooming experience no matter where you go. We took my old Cairn to a private groomer only to find out that one of the groomers was bit by a pup and she ended up throwing it against a wall as retaliation (I know terrible thought). I've taken Gizmo to Petsmart to get his nails dremmeled becasue it's quick and cheap. However, I have found another private place that I like (only because I like supporting smaller businesses) but that's a personal choice and one that I wouldn't impose on others. I think Petsmart and Petco are options that are fine for anyone with a dog. It's just like with my hair. I've gone to JCpenny salon, paid out the you know where for a cut and color and it looked like crap. Went into a Walmart SmartStyle, paid 40 bucks and got one of te best cuts and colors I've ever had. You can get a bad experience anywhere. Sadly, bad experiences seem to travel faster than good ones.

| Our pets are left helpless in the hands of a groomer. While we have the ability to keep someone from shaving our skin too close or nicking our ears or blow drying us at a burning high temperature our pets do not. Interview, get references and stay for at least the first grooming. Our pets cannot speak for themselves. Just because a person works in the pet care industry does not mean they are good with animals or good at their trade. I would check licensing also. Where did they go to school and how long ago? |
