| All of this talk about spaying and neutering?? Ok, I need to know when is the best time to have your puppy spayed? Prissy turned 19 weeks old this past Saturday..I do dread it but it does need to be done..I had Yoshi neutered at 5 months...so when did you have yours done?

| I waited until 6 months with my male and then 8 months with my female because she was so small.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I waited till 7 months with Joey because we wanted to get baby teeth pulled at the same time and he needed to have enough adult teeth.

| Sophie Kate was almost 7 months old when she was spayed. I let the Vet tell me when the time was right since Sophie Kate is my first dog.

| As you know Miss Brandy just had got spayed yesterday she is five months and 8lbs..it mostly a big butt..lol but my vet recommended to do it before she went into heat.. which happens at 6months she said. Another said to wait till she goes into heat once and then do it.. I figured that I have it done early when she is strong and well. So I want to say it's up to you.. just an FYI it all happened so quick and I worried for two weeks just to have it done.. yesterday like all the mommies said she was sleepy but today she's at 98%.. she knows something happened but she's ok. oh and nothing held her back from pigging out when she got home..I was suprise I guess she gets that strong will from her mommy..lol although the quiet time is nice..lol

| Prissy's vet wants to do hers now and I'm not sure what to think...well she said 2 weeks after her vaccines were finished. The gentleman that his baby girl go into heat at 5 months got me to thinking about when it is best...she finished up her shot the 18th of January and weighed in at 3.7 lbs, well this was after eating. I think she has gained more but still little to me.

| I like to wait as long as possible now for a male. Let their growth plates close, let them mature a bit, etc. I don't believe in too early spay/neutering. Jackson was over 7 months and I may have waited until 9-10 months if I knew then what I know now, but oh well, he was a big boy already and had grown into his size by then. He was already 12lbs at that point! Ideally, you wanna spay before a females first heat, so sometimes it's a guessing game, as some can have a first heat as early as 6 months and as late as 1 year. So I think 6 - 7 months is a good time. But I am pretty sure 6 months is pretty rare to come into heat... hopefully someone else can answer.

| You speak of growth plates closing, now what does this mean? I told ya I am so new to this..Yoshi, my peke hasn't gained a lot of weight, he stays right around 12.5 lbs. Like I said he was done at 5 months.

| Here's a good article: Canine Sports Productions: Early Spay-Neuter Considerations for the Canine Athlete You can see some of the pros and cons in regards to neutering a male or spaying a female. 12-14 months of age is when the growth plates typically close. I like gemy's post: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/3778446-post13.html

| I dont know if its the same for cats than dogs but I got my cats spayed at 4 months and they stayed really small. They are really tiny for adult cats and I wondered if that was why.
