I like to wait as long as possible now for a male. Let their growth plates close, let them mature a bit, etc. I don't believe in too early spay/neutering. Jackson was over 7 months and I may have waited until 9-10 months if I knew then what I know now, but oh well, he was a big boy already and had grown into his size by then. He was already 12lbs at that point!

Ideally, you wanna spay before a females first heat, so sometimes it's a guessing game, as some can have a first heat as early as 6 months and as late as 1 year. So I think 6 - 7 months is a good time. But I am pretty sure 6 months is pretty rare to come into heat... hopefully someone else can answer.
