I have never raised puppies and have always gotten mine at 6-7 weeks and them be wonderful and healthy. I just want to know what does the mother teach them between then and 12 weeks?

I agree....I'm curious too. I'm more worried about HEALTH issue rather than behavioral issues when taking home a young puppy.

Congrats on your new baby. REMEMBER this is a BABY. It will require alot of rest with short play times. Do not change its eating habits until it is well established at your home. You may find a food that you like better but changing foods in a tiny baby can really mess up its tummy. I didnt introduce anything new in the way of food/treats until my baby had been home 6 weeks and she was 13 weeks when I brought her home.
At 8 weeks a toy breed puppy eats,Sleeeeeeps and plays. They also chew on anything and will pick things up off of the floor to try to eat. I have said "drop it" so much in the past 9 months that all I have to do now is say her name and she spits what is in her mouth out.
There will be things that you will have to teach because the mommie dog is gonna be there to do it. Between now and the time you pick your baby up you need to read,read,read and prepare a space for just baby that is safe. I wish you the very best of luck with your new baby and am glad to hear that you have a support system just a phone call away.

Yeah I plan on weaning her when she gets older. The breeder was feeding her Eukanuba which I know isn't a great brand of dog food. And I don't plan on giving her any treats yet.

For one that I know of from my own is extreme anxiety issues. My dog was a pet store pup ripped away from mom probably at 6 or 7 weeks. She has extreme anxiety when I go to leave the house. When she goes behind a gate or in a cage she licks and licks until she's soaked and all slimy wet.

My baby didn't have any anxiety issues. Potty training wasn't any different for him than is was for my german shepherd. And the puppy biting was never that bad no more than a usual puppy wanting to play. I think you will do just fine bringing the puppy home at 7 weeks...the worse problem i had with him was naming him :rolleyes: it took 5 weeks for us to finally agree on a name...I just called him little man until then.:) Now he is Link.

Then why didn't you suggest she look at the YTCA and see that 12 weeks is the best? You need to keep the puppy on the food its eating now for a few weeks and then think about changing food its not best to do it when everything else is changing.

LOL Thanks. We brought her home yesterday. And we still haven't figured out a name for her. :p She's pretty much potty trained. She's only had one accident so far. She seems to be adjusting pretty well, she just hasn't had much interest in eating or drinking. So I've been making her eat and drink. But I'll ask the vet for advice today.

The YTCA states that 12 weeks is best and I am sure they have done some research behind it........................ it bothers me when people think its ok to encourage people to not do what is best for the puppy.

Because it was obvious that she didn't want to care for the puppies anymore. She sold the other two puppies the night before we picked up ours. And I know I need to keep the puppy on the food it's breeder was feeding her, but I need advice for when she's ready to be weaned to a better and healthier food. I've done enough research to know that.

I'm not doing it because I want to. I already told you that THE BREEDER didn't want to care for the puppies anymore. We already paid for the puppy and wasn't about to let her have free money. If I had a choice, I'd wait till the puppy was at least 10 weeks old, but I didn't have a choice. She's not encouraging me, she's the only one here who really answered my original question. I just wanted to know if if it was possible for things to be alright (mainly HEALTH wise) if we HAD to bring her home at 7 weeks. Of course I have the best interest of the puppy in mind. If I didn't, I wouldn't have came here for advice.

I suggest grain free foods maybe even going to some of there websites and asking for free samples to try. I like this website http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/ not necessarily because of the rating system but because they have a lot of information on there site.

The breeder we got Joel from wanted us to take him home at 7 weeks, so we asked if we could wait one more week and he said "I guess we can tollerate him another week" ugh whatever that means!

Thanks. I've been on that website and saw the ratings. I'll go and look for more info and possible free samples. I was thinking of doing grain-free. I read that evo has too much protein, but the lady at the pet supply store recommended that. So I was wondering if that brand wasn't very good because of all the protein?

Well I kinda felt like we'd be able to take better care of her. Yes I understand she needs her mom, but the breeder didn't seem very interested in caring for the puppies. I mean I know she did take care of them, but if she was willing to get rid of them so early, it made me think that she doesn't really know what she's doing.
