Newbie! Need info I'm doing as much research as possible to make sure I know how to take very good care of my new puppy. We haven't taken her home yet. She's almost 7 weeks old. We are supposed to be taking her home when she turns 8 weeks (which I think is still a little too young), but I found out that the breeder wants us to take her home either today or in the next few days. I was hoping that she was going to keep the puppy until she was at least 10 weeks old, but I guess she's not. I don't really know what to do. I know how fragile yorkies can be and I'm worried something bad will happen if we take her home at 7 weeks old. My sister-in-law is a vet, so if anything we can call her. Is she going to be ok if we do end up taking her home within the next few days?? P.S. We already paid a partial amount for the puppy. We were allowed to see the inside of the breeders house and where she kept the puppies. We got to meet the mom and dad of the puppies and they are well taken care of. |
If the deposit is not refundable and you did not pay too much already, chalk it up as a learning experience and go to a reputable breeder, who surely won't want you to take it home at 7 weeks. |
:goodpost: Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't bring one home before 12 weeks. Mr. Beasley was 12 weeks old when I purchased him, but I have since found out that I bought from a broker who most likely sold for a puppy mill. No telling when he left his mom. That said, is the puppy over 2lbs yet? |

Yorkie puppies should not leave there mothers until they are 12 weeks old. All reputable breeders know this and its is also what the YTCA says. If she isn't keeping the puppies until 12 weeks I would also be worried about other things she hasn't done. Were the parents health tested? Is LP in there lines? Are they AKC registered? I think if at all possible I would not get my puppy from this breeder. |

The ONLY thing I want to know is if it is possible for things to be ok if we do have to bring the puppy home at 7 weeks? |
Every state has their own regulations and laws on puppies and how old they need to be before they can be released to the new owners (forever homes/families.) Check your area and that relay that information to the breeder. She may be breaking the law is she insist on you taking her sooner. Here in Ohio it is at 8 weeks. Each individual breeder may choose to keep them longer for the health and well being of the pup. |

Things can go fine with bringing home an 8 week pup. I'm sure you'll be getting her vet checked right away. It's also great that you have a family member who's a vet. She will be a great resource for you. Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing pics of your new baby:) |

Congrats. I think you're going to be very happy with your new puppy. Definitely see if they'll let the puppy stay with the mom another week. After that you should be fine. There is much info to learn here and on other sites around the internet. Arm yourself with good information and you will be ready to raise your child. |
I ended up bringing my puppy home at 6 and half weeks old (yes I know way way toooo young). He was so tiny but he hasn't had any problems and he is now 6 months old and very healthy. |

I would say under any circumstance I would bring a baby home that is less than 12 weeks, are you home all day and all night? this puppy needs around the clock care toy dogs are NOT ready to leave their mama at 7 weeks my puppies are not even fully wean from mama yet.. so sad that money is more important to this breeder than the health of the babies... |
just research this at the wk age and find all the stuff YT tells you too do to take proper care of the fur baby at that wk range. they dont support that age of adoption but if the breeder is leaving this as a last option there are sooooo many with wonderful advice to offer here. |
Thanks for all the suggestions. I just talked to our vet and she said that it'll be ok to take her home, as long as she is weaned (which she is). We have an appointment tomorrow to see the vet to get her all checked out. I'll post pics when we bring her home. :) |

Yes. I will be home with the puppy all day everyday. I would never bring a puppy home to just leave it there by itself. I trust our vet's judgement. She is my sister-in-law and she would never advise us that it would be ok if it really wasn't. I understand that it would be better for the puppy's behavioral development, for it to stay with the mother til at least 10 weeks. I'd rather have been able to wait til then to take her home, but not much I can do about that now. So I'm gonna do whatever I can to make sure she is properly taken care of. Yes I know about hypoglycemia and I know how dangerous it is, I've done enough research to prepare myself. And if I'm ever concerned about anything, I can just give my sister-in-law a call. |

You are so lucky to have a close family member as your suport who is a vet. |

When I was helping my exes mom find a reputable shih tzu breeder, we found a show breeder in PA. Went to her house, she was on the Akc website, etc. I told his mom: if the breeder suggests for any reason we can take Lacey earlier than 12 weeks we say no, we want her at 12 weeks. Well, when we told the breeder she was hysterical laughing. She said 12 weeks is the MINIMUM. It may be longer if she deems necessary for the pup. Again, I know you are not getting your baby from a breeder, per say, and I'm very glad you came here for advice. I'm just so curious why she is pushing to get the pup gone. It makes me nervous that the pup is showing signs of being sick or something and doesn't want you to change tour mind. So I wish you luck. Please come back to post pics and ask questions if you need help! :p |
I got my puppy young too! I actually prefer to get a puppy as soon as it is weaned to kibble and then train it myself. Sounds like you've got a good plan in place with the vet check right away, and being home to feed around the clock at regularly scheduled intervals. Congratulations on your new puppy! Do you have a name picked out yet? |

I was wondering what you think is the best food for yorkies? I've been doing research and the lady at the pet supply store said EVO is a good brand, but I read that it might be too much protein for them. |

No I don't have a name picked out yet. I have a few in mind though. |

And yes it's a great thing to have a sister-in-law that is a vet. We have an appointment with her tomorrow to get our new little puppy all checked out. |
I can not stress enough how much this baby needs to be with the Mother at least for 12 weeks. The Mother teaches them so much and if you bring this baby home before 12 weeks the baby will not have that advantage. I hope all works out for you |
Best of luck to you and the pup... |
