I live in an apartment and what I've done is completely close off the areas where anyone can escape. If someone wants to get in, they'll have to climb over our fence after climbing over a 10' hedge Chicken wire and netting and close off the top and the sides so that little birds can come inside and leave quickly, but nothing else can come in. Another name for such a place is called a "catio" which is really popular amongst many cat owners. And works fabulously for both of my babies.

| I would make sure she is VERY hungry and then use a very high-value treat such as just cooked chicken or steak - something hot and still smelling very very good. She will be much more likely to give it a try coming through this door she is fearful of IF the treat is worth risking it for. Hold the door open a bit and if you can, have someone start her through. If she is hungry enough and the other person will hold her and gently "help" her push through the door and you are on the other side with that fresh cooked and warm meat, she will likey risk it and go through. After that, it is praise with eye contact - let her feel your happiness with her - really celebrate and connect once she gets her treat. Then it is just repetition of the same a very few times each day. If she is really hungry when you begin this door training and there is someone to help start her through and she gets to have that wonderful treat once she's done it, followed by mom loving on her and you keep repeating this - eventually she will become habituated to the sensations of going through the door to get to that good meat and the hugs and she will become less and less fearful. After enough times, one day she will anticipate and rush through without any help.

YT 1000 Club Member | Oh me, I KNEW I had forgotten something... A Double Key Dead Bolt (when possible) on the Door the Doggy Door is in. And, a place away from the Lock/Door, for the Emergency Key.
