| Collapsed Trachea I've noticed from all the threads I read on here, that a collapsed trachea can be quite prevalent in yorkies. I know not to walk him on a collar leash cause that can cause a collapse but I was wondering if there are any other causes that I should be aware of. I don't ever pull or tug anywhere near his neck and I made sure the groomer knows not to use one of those stands with the collars on it to groom him. Anything else I should look out for?

| maybe some of the breeders on here will be better equipped to answer that one for you. I do wonder if it could also be a genetic thing? Great question |

| Sometimes it is just hereditary and there is nothing you can do to prevent it or sometimes it is caused by injury to the trachea so just making sure nothing is putting pressure on the neck is all thats needed

| oh wow I didn't know it was genetic. So it just happens one day? Or does it usually come about during the later stages of the yorkie's life?

| It happens gradually and gets worse in time. Thats why when people on here say my dog is honking is it reverse sneezing I tell them to have it vet checked anyway to be safe.

| My baby has never been diagnosed with any trachea problems but before I got her the harness I noticed that she choked right away when I put her on a leash with a collar. I could not even walk her it was so bad. I have to be careful when grooming not to touch her throat with my hand while holding her. The vet has checked her and did not find anything obvious but it is a weakness and I would not want to take any chances. Just don't want any stress on the area at all. |

| Keeping your dog a healthy weight can be helpful in avoiding CT. Extra weight puts unnecessary strain on the neck.

| Another thing that can cause damage is a dental cleaning. If the trac tube is overinflated by the technician, it can damage the trachea. Always have the vet use the smallest tube that is possible..Finding a vet that will do whats called a mask down is also a good thing.

Paris: Always in my ♥ Donating YT Member | I think Paris' trachea was damaged when he had his bladder stone surgery. After that was when I first heard him coughing. |

| Oh wow didn't know all of this. Definitely going to take caution whenever Geno has to be put under for anything. Luckily, our breeder is the anesthesiologist at the vet and even when he got his distemper shot, she yelled at the tech to give him the smallest needle lol The vet is a little out of the way but if it gives us peace of mind knowing the breeder has a lot of experience with animals that are as small as Geno, then driving out of the way is worth it. Also, I do massage the top of Geno's neck and like on the sides I'll go in circles with my fingers. It's just a habit I do with dogs for whatever reason. I used to do it all the time to my mom's dog. I figured a little massage would feel good for them cause I'm never one to turn down a massage haha But I think I might stop that just out of nervouseness. I don't want to harm him. Is gently massaging his neck bad for him?

Donating YT Addict | One of my friends who has a small breed dog, not a yorkie said her dogs collapsed trachea is genetic, the vet just told them to use harness for walking not collar, and to not let her bark obsessively. They rescued her from the animal shelter.

| I don't think that massage of the surrounding muscles would be harmful but just don't put pressure on the throat it's self. |

Paris: Always in my ♥ Donating YT Member | There are also supplements that are supposed to strengthen the cartilige of the trachea. You could look in to that. |
