I am definitely one of those members that would never have that thought enter my mind...but you are right not everyone is that way. I agree that a puppy isn't the best idea with a newborn and an older dog might do better. With respect to that subject, my fiance and I are getting married in September. Teddy actually just turned a year old and we are getting our second in a few weeks...a little girl (not sure if you saw my thread). We want him to have a friend to play with so down the road when we do have children Teddy will always have his buddy around to play with him when we can't. I have always thought ahead about this kind of stuff - I think it will be great for him! Plus by the time we do have children they will be trained and hopefully best buddies!

I think it will be more important than ever for you to get obediance training for your dogs. Dogs that will go lay down and stay when you tell them to and who know exactly that all humans are boss. These aren't easy to teach correctly, if you don't have training and so many humans resort to physical punishment when they get frustrated, and this just makes the dog scared and more aggressive. Seriously, I think a well behaved dog is so much happier than an out of control dog, and if you learn the basics of training, you can use it on your kids too!
