| How much should they eat? Caesar weighted 3.3 pounds when I brought him to the vet about 3 months ago. He is 11 months old. I weighed myself....then weighted us together and it is saying that he weights 5---not exactly acurate.(only a home scale) My question is how much are you suppose to feed them? My cousin feeds her dog(Yorkie) 1/3 a cup of dog food a day...is that enough? |

| Good question. Sadie weighed 5.5 lbs. 8 mos. ago, and is now at 6.5 lbs., which concerns me as I don't believe she should be over 7 lbs. I feed her about 1/4 cup of food every AM and PM. Half is soft and the other half is hard. She is not fond of hard food, but she needs it to help keep her teeth in good condition. Second thought, it is prob. a little more than 1/4 cup twice a day. Waiting for other comments too please. Kate Quote:

| Kelsey eats about 1/4 cup @ a.m and p.m half dry and we food. And during the day she'll knaw on her bones. She seems pretty full and she's not gaining weight...so I think this is about right for my baby.

| Your pups size will have a lot to do with how much they eat. Feeding them wet food they are more liable to weigh more, as well as having their teeth decay quicker. My yorkie is a pig and would eat anything I put in front of her regardless if she just ate. I feed her dry only; 1/4 cup am 1/4 cup pm and she also recieves treat bones during the day. If your pup is able to be a self feeder than they usually regulate how much they take in. Remember that your pup is a good weight when you can feel their ribs and they have a waist. They are to skinny if their backbone, hip bones, rib cage are protruding. They are to heavy if you are unable to feel ribs, spine, or they have no waist. Remember though that dry food will swell, so what looks like a little actually will fill them up. A good way to see how much food they are getting is to place thier dry fod in a bowl of water and let is soak until it has fully expanded. Your pups frame will determine their weight range too.
