No one said you are a bad owner or questioned your love for your dogs. We are just trying to help you see that there is a healthier alternative to having them be in heat.

I know your question was about trying to stop your females from "humping", during their first heat. You can try to redirect their behaviour, just like you do for any other behaviour that you don't want. But it is something females will do, and in fact males as well who are sexually intact.

I'm going to assume (and I could be wrong), that you are relatively new to owning dogs. So you must keep your babies safe from any male dogs during their heat. No letting them run off lead. Walk them only on lead. They are way too young to mate, and that is a road you don't want to go down.

For females and their health, research indicates, that the health benefits of spaying, likely exceed the health risks of not spaying. If you continue with your decision to not spay, you will need to learn the early warning signs of pyrometra, and mammary tumors. Speak to your vet about this. Also you can go to any pet medical advice site, and find out.
One of the problems with pyrometra is that often there are no visible early warning signs. Literally as one poster said, your dog can seem fine in the AM, but by the time you notice something is wrong and take her to the vet, it is already too late, the infection has spread, the fever is out of control, and your dog dies. This can happen in a 24hr time period.
Mammary cancer, has a high metatasis rate, although again a bit better with early detection signs being present. Talk with your vet, how often and what to look for in your dog(s) for signs of this.

Seriously consider a low cost spay and neuter clinic. If they are too far away from you, then budget for the spay. Start putting away 20 or 25 dollars a month (you can buy Canada Savings Bonds at any bank) and they will make monthly automatic withdrawals from your account. Easy as pie. In two years you will have enough funds to cover one spay, and so on. Or make the amount larger say $50 and in a year you are good to go with a spay.

Are you in Newfoundland or Labrador? I had one of the best vacations of my life in St John's Nfld.

If it not about the money then why do you want to risk both your dogs lives?

You didn't answer my post, what about this place, it says it's $150.00 for females. They also microchip during spaying.

No, I was just so happy to find something with St. Johns NL. I'm really not familiar with Canada and the cities and the zips, so perhaps doing a google yourself might help. It did say:
Quote:
We encourage St. John’s residents to contact the City of St. John’s Humane Services Division by calling 311 for information about their Spay/Neuter Program
Have you tried that?

OwnedByJezebel posted another one, does that one apply to you?

I thought it was interesting to read that the incidence of pyometra in intact females is 25% before the age of 10. One of my parents rescues many years ago had the condition when we found her dumped and abused in the canyon. Aside from being very expensive to treat, I remember how sick she was and how much pain the poor little thing was in. Aside from not wanting to have an oops litter, the memory of her suffering is one of the reasons I spay all my dogs.

This is just my opinion, but saying that it's ok not to spay because if something happens because you have insurance is kind of like saying it's ok to not wear a seat belt because you have health insurance. What's a little pain and suffering as long as the bills get paid?

Yeah I agree, when Joey's not feeling well I just go nutty, I'd rather have the pain than see him suffer. He had eye ulceration several years ago and wouldn't eat, and the doctor said that they are extremely painful. Fortunately, the drops eased the condition right away, but if I had to see him suffer for days, I would have been devastated. I believe that it’s us to us to do all the preventative treatment we can. I’m wondering now if the OP just wanted a vent thread, because it doesn’t seem like she’s open to any suggestions.

you say you "adopted" one of them. why didn't the rescue or shelter cover the cost of some if not all the spay. must reputable rescues and shelters don't send an unspayed dog to a new home. where did you get them again?

also i agree with other posters, i have an occasional humper because she's the dominant and aggressive dog and i redirect her attention onto a toy and away from her brother. but she is fixed and so is he. i wanted her to have a long healthy life free from heat cycles and misery. even though dogs aren't like human cycles i know mine are miserable and i didn't think she needed to deal with that or even worse a possible pregnancy in which she could possibly have troubles and even lose her life. i love her too much and spaying was a #1 priority when i first got her. my male was fixed before they allowed me to adopt him. that was from Westie Rescue of MO which is a reputable rescue that always spay/neuters before placing dogs.

i agree that spaying can prevent lots of female cancers in dogs as well as major life threatening things like pyometria and even sometimes a pregnancy in a female that the owner has no idea how to help the dog whelp and might lose the dog in giving birth and end up costing thousands in vet bills trying to save her.

but you seem to have your mind made up that you want dogs in heat and enjoy this fun thing to laugh at so nothing we say will probably matter much anyways. good luck with the humping and keep laughing until something happens.

Although I don't have any answer to your "humping" question, I did just want to say offer you some support on the issue. when it comes down to it, it is your business...your option whether or not you choose to spay or neuter your pet. You have to do what you can afford. No one knows that but you. It kind of seems like some people would expect you to take your dog to the vet for every little thing. Sometimes, even things they wouldn't even take their "skin babies" to the doctor for. They would just ask the pharmacist and give them an OTC med. I did have Reilly spayed because: 1) I could afford it and 2) I felt it was best for him. But I also buy him toys, clothes, boots, carriers and car seats in various colors and styles. Why? Because I can afford it. Yet, many of my friends think that's going overboard. You came here for an answer to a question, and like many others, you got judgement and criticism. I'm sorry for that.

i have to spay mone and know it is very important. It is hard because our vet is a hour away , and I am paranoid that something will happen and they will die. Yet it is no excuse for not doing so , i am planning on doing this becaust their are so many important reasons to do so . It is a shame that it will cost you $550 per dog, that is insane . I think after spaying them they will be calmer and get along better .

My little girl is getting fixed right after the holidays. Already have plans made. But...... The low cost clinic in our town does not do any dog under 15 pounds. So, sometimes the low cost clinic may not always be an option. I agree getting them fixed is the best option but I am paying $150 after taxes for spay and microchip where as our low cost clinic is only 25$. Oh well, I would pay twice that amount to know it was done safe, and was for her to stay healthy.
