| keeping busy and update on Callie Does any one have any ideas of how to keep Callie busy in the play pen? She has done great for two weeks but now she is getting very tired of it. She is not a barker but she will let out a few barks and cries sometimes a little growl. I know she doesn't need anything because she has done it after being outside and going both pee and poo and after getting food and water. I have many different bones in there with her also me and my grandma when we can hold her in our laps but shes gotten were she wants down and obviously she cant so its safer for her to put her back in the pen when she gets like that. We tried kongs when she was a puppy and when the treat broke off she would throw it and be done with it. She is never left in the room by herself for more then 5 minutes and then normally someone is in the kitchen and can see and hear her. Shes doing great as far as the surgery went in my opinion her incision seemed to heal very fast there is one tiny tiny spot not completely healed but looks close. She also is putting some weight on it when I take her potty. She is drinking good, potting good, eating good, and is very much being herself lol. She goes to the orthopedic surgeon on the 8th for a recheck and we will also meet with the physical therapist the same day. I am so excited to go and see what he thinks. One thing I am also wondering is if she will be able to be out of her pen and open Christmas presents on Christmas?

| My only suggestion is that in order to keep her busy, rather than putting a single treat in the kong, try putting some good wet dog food in there. I do that with Oz and it keeps him busy for some time. I usually fill it (he has the smallest size kong), then shove a small treat right in so its totally covered up. However, once he's done with his kong he just lays down and doesn't play with anything, even though I have toys and chew stuff for him in there as well as his water and food. I also notice that he only whines when he's in the playpen AND we are there. I think he's saying "hey, you're here, I'm here, why aren't we together???" If he thinks he's alone, he's quiet as can be. For the kong, I'm sure you could use other things too, like frozen peanut butter or yogurt, etc. Anything so that she has to lick at it for a while.

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | We use the Kong to keep Katie Scarlett busy too in her x pen. She doesn't like it in there, but she is getting used to it. She can see me the whole time she is in there, but she will still sit and just stare at me with those eyes. I try to talk to her and let her know I'm there. But she will fuss. If she starts to whimper a little too much or even bark, I look at her and say 'go nite nite' and she knows that means to get in her bed and behave. She usually will go in there with her bully stick and settle down. I also try to rotate out her toys that I put her in there with and that has helped us. The other thing I do is leave the tv in the room on to either Animal Planet or Nick. She loves cartoons believe it or not. I catch her watching them all the time. LOL. The other thing I do is if she has been in there for over an hour and has been good the entire time, I get in the pen with her and play for a few minutes. It's like her reward for being good. I think she is starting to figure out if she is good for a set amount of time, that means play time with Mommy.

| I guess I am going to have to see if my grandma can watch her for an hour or so and I can run to the store and get a kong. I live with my grandparents and I am the only one who pick up Callie (16 pounds) and take her potty unless my parents come down and my mom is normally the one who has to take me to the store (anxiety) and my dad is working. But if I take her out right before I leave she should be ok for a few hours and my grandma can just make sure she is behaving lol. She tends to get sad and sleep when I go some where. My grandma tends to think that every time Callie cries or barks in her pen that it means she has to go potty so I can see her calling me 30 minutes after I leave going Taylor she needs to go potty. I have only left her once sense the surgery and that was for my dentist appointment and my dad was here to take her potty.

| I agree on the Kong. Put some treats inside and then stuff it or seal it with frozen yogurt or canned food. Stick it in the freezer. Should last her a little while at least. Jackson never cared about Kongs until I started doing this. Some do peanut butter too, but I'd make sure it's like unsalted, low fat, no sugars, and all that stuff. Good luck - I am sure this is so hard on you all.

| There is really only so much you can do. It's so hard to see them get so bored and unable to run around the way they want.

| I bought Callie a kong today and some of the stuff that goes in it and plan to try it tomorrow. She seems pretty tired today and I think she may possibly be hurting just a little not a lot or anything shes not shaking or panting just sleepy. Its her fist day without pain meds.

I also read that you can soak chew toys in chicken broth and freeze them, though I have not tried this myself. I hope Callie is feeling better . I'll keep her in my thoughts . | |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I know it is hard to keep them confined for such a long time. When Pixie had her LP surgery after the first week I was able to put Roxie in with her and that helped keep her company. I also had a play yard set up in my bedroom and a small animal ex pen I could move from room to room. That way I could put her wherever I was. I also put the little expen on my bed at night so she could sleep with me. Pixie seemed to feel much better at about the 3 week mark and I was able to let her walk around the house for short periods of time. I hope Callie heals quickly and you can keep her from getting to antsy in the pen.
