| Potty Training Questions Need Help I have a male who is just shy of 5 months. He stills poops in his crate at night, ( he sleeps in my room right next to my bed) even though he will whine to go out in the middle of the night to pee. During the day he goes on a pee pad or outside, but if he gets in a room with carpeting he will pee there instead of his pad. Am I confusing him by trying to let him do pee pad and outside? Will they get confused about a pee pad and think its the same as carpeting? This is the first time I am using pee pads, as I have 2 other Yorkies 4yr old females who where never trained on pee pads, just going outside and they learned pretty quick. Is it a male thing or am I not giving him enough time. Please if anyone can give me any suggestions I would so appreciate it....thanks Kathleen |

| Mine are trained on pee pads and honestly wish I'd not done that. Now they will pee on any soft material that's on the floor, ugh! What's the pup's feeding schedule like? If he's free-fed, it's harder to predict their bowel movements. If he's on a schedule (2 or 3 or even 4 times a day if he's tiny), then his poo should be regular as clockwork. So he's pooping AFTER the mid-night pee run? If so, then yes, he probably needs more time to get that done. I promise that the sleepless nights will get better, it's just like having a skin baby Good luck!!!!!!!

| I feel your pain. Cailee is just shy of 6 months and we battled the crate/poop issue. We struggled with the crate at night so I gave up and let her sleep with me. No accidents and I can hear her better when she wants to go during the night. In the past month or so her schedule has changed and she no longer needs to poop during the night and waits till we get up. However, if we go out to dinner, we were crating her and it always was around the time of the night poop so invaribly she would start to go in the crate (this is a gross subject, I know). So the past couple of times (including last night), we didn't crate her and just confined her to a small area with the pee pad. She used the pee pad so it was a success. All of this is much earlier than our experience with Cody. Good luck

| How much room does your dog have in the crate? Crate training works because a dog's natural instinct is not to potty where they sleep. However, in order to make it work, they can't sleep at one end of the crate and be able to get to the other to potty. The crate should have just enough room for your pup to stand up, turn around, and lie down. Any more room than that and crate training may not be effective. If your crate is too big, you can block off one side by putting a box or something in there. Or, if it came with a divider, you could use that too. Once your dog is fully housebroken, you can stop blocking off the other part of the crate. |

I agree with the other poster that questioned feeding. My pup has always been a predictable pooper based on when she's fed. Make sure you are sticking to a feeding schedule and give him plenty of time after his last feeding to go potty outside before bedtime. Good luck

| Potty Training Questions Need Help Thanks for all the information i have received. I do have him on a feeding schedule he eats 3 times a day. but his poops are never like clock work at all. I don't feed him any later than 5 pm so I think thats enough time to go before bed. I usually don't put him to bed until 11 or 12 pm. So some of you don't really like using the pee pads, so I might just stop that and hope he follows my other yorkies. I do have the pee pad near the back door and was hoping little by little to get the pee pad outside. Maybe that would help. Again thanks for the all the information and I know it will get better as he gets older... Kathleen |

| Totally agree with Kazzy - if the others are all trained to potty outside then surely your littlie has the best teachers? I personally wouldn't worry about pee pads at all - just (obviously!) be very diligent and let them all get on with it (outside!!) Sally + Harry x |
