Senior Yorkie Talker | What?! Gas Chamber? I just read about a beagle that survived a gas chamber at a shelter. At first I was like, "Wow, that dog is meant for something." Then after about half a second I realized what I had just read. Gas chamber?! What?! I had NO idea this was going on. I did a google search on it and a video popped up. I would never post that video. It was horrific. I am stunned that this is happening still. Euthanizing at a shelter upsets me but at least its done humanely. I'm at a loss for words. The things people think are okay to do to living things never cease to amaze me. To put multiple animals in a gas chamber box. Honestly, I'm so angry right now and I'm angrier that this has been going on since I was very small and I have no knowledge about it. |

| I'm sorry you're upset. Gas chamber is sort of nonspecific. Yes, they do cram tons of animals into them at some shelters and pump in toxic gas to euthanize. Sometimes it doesn't even kill the animals, so they are left to suffer some more. there are also "gas chambers" (induction chambers/inductions tanks) at veterinary hospitals. They are (rarely) used to put an animal under anesthesia (esp. when they are too hard to handle). And unfortunately they are also needed (again, rarely) to euthanize an animal when they are too hard to handle or when a vein can't be hit after several attempts (small, sick animals have crappy veins generally..). Gas anesthesia is pumped in and they fall asleep as humanely as possible, then in the case of euthanasia, if a vein still can't be hit with the animal sleeping, the solution is injected intracardially. It is very humane if done correctly, it's just terribly unpleasant to think about. But again, when they throw tons of animals in a chamber and pump it full of gas and hope they are dead, that is completely unacceptable. A gas chamber in and of itself is not a bad thing though.

Senior Yorkie Talker | I worked in a clinic and we did have a box like that. It was small and used mainly for as u said, small sick animals. Hamsters, snakes, rabbits...ect. While I was there it was never used however I have no doubt if it had to be it would be done as humanely as possible. What I saw was a large box (dumster sized) where ppl put around 6 big dogs in and gassed. Then placed more ontop of the deceased and gassed them as well. This in no way is acceptable. As for the story of the beagle though, it is incredible he survived that. It was an "educational" video to let ppl know this is happening. Could it have possibly been over exaggerating to make a point? I can't believe many do this. |

| I don't think it's an overexaggeration. It probably doesn't happen in too many places, but is very real. Some survive because of the type of gas used and the fact that they don't follow up with an injection. I would assume some are sent to be cremated while still half alive. Extremely sad.

| I think I seen that story on Good Morning America. The beagle was on there as a "guest" and he got a home. I guess it wasn't his time. His little guardian angel was with him and now he has a wonderful family. That is if it's the same story. |

| I think the reality of it, is that this archaic method is still utilized by MANY small town animal control centers. They can't afford other means.
