Yorkie size????

HUmmm..not sure. I think that samll dogs are cute. BUt you are right...I originally wanted a toy or tiny dog...but they are sooo expenise. Dollar was 1.6 lbs when I got him at 3 months old....I have had him a little over amonth and he is already 2.3 lbs! And I glad that he is getting to be a bigger healtier size... he is gowing so fast.....

I know everyone loves their Yorkie (regardless of its size) -- who wouldn't?

But - I am glad that people (even those with very small Yorkies) have stepped forward and reminded everyone of the possible health problems and special care that the little ones need. It's important for people to know these things before they go out searching for an extra tiny little dog.

There is no doubt in my mind that a lot of people here are the perfect people to have the smaller dogs. They do take care of them and give them the special care they need.

There are two things that I can't approve of:
1) Breeding Yorkies down to get smaller and smaller dogs.
2) People getting these little dogs who don't realize they need special care
and that they may require a lot of extra medical care (and can't afford it).

carol Jean I accept your apology. I was very tired from nursing a very very sick little yorkie around the clock for several days to save him and it just rubbed me the wrong way I guess. As much love as I feel for this little guy it is hard for me to imagine him being a status symbol for me or anything else other than my sweet little baby. i did understand your post and know the first few lines were the only ones directed at me. Again, apology accepted.

I wish everyone could just be happy with the dog they have. WE shouldn't assume that big = good and healthy, small = bad and not healthy. I think it's pretty cool that such a fantastic breed of dog is not one size fits all. In my opinion tiny dogs do not belong in teen's purses OR running around the feet of small children but that doesn't mean there aren't legitimate reasons for other people wanting them.

A tiny dog is so much fun at my stage in life. I had the big dogs when the kids were small. Now the kids are big and the dog is small.

My Pippa is 3 lbs 8 oz at 17 mos old. I really thought she would be bigger! She's a cute little button, for sure, but she does seem more "sickly" than my other Yorkie and a constant worry on whether she's eating enough. Now that Scout is in our family and growing like a little weed (6 mos-same size as Pippa) I can really tell the difference in health and learning ability. Scout learns things a little faster, although maybe it's Pippa who's the smart one-quietly manipulating mom so she gets carried and coddled...LOL

I just think they are all different regardless of size just like people are. I have 4 and they are all so different in personality and needs and appetite, etc. I don't really think you can generalize based on size. I think you can just as easily have a fragile 6 lber as a fragile 3 lber as far as overall health.

My smallest (2.5 lbs at 7 mos) is my healthiest and the one eats the best, is the least picky, the fiestiest, has the most energy, learnes new behaviors quickly, thinks she is the protector of everyone, etc!

When I was trying to find homes for Zoes puppies so many people called me and the first question was always "How big will they get?" and I would tell them probably around 7lbs and they would always say "that is too big....I was hoping for something much smaller." Well one day my neighbor stopped by and wanted to see the pups and she said that she knows someone who would want one and that she would tell her about the pups. Well that person called me and after about 10 questions about the pups she asked me the usual question..."how big" and when I said at least 7 lbs she said "Great"! Needless to say they will be taking the puppy home on Christmas eve as it is a family present and I am so excited because I know that I have found the right home for him because the first question wasn't how big but it was the 10th question and her response to the answer was what I was waiting to here...

well... When I looked for my first yorkie, I also asked about that. I asked about parents, how big was puppy at age at 12 (I didn't speak with breeders who sold their pups in 8 weeks). Yes, I wanted a small yorkie, so the size was important for me. But not the size ONLY, of course.
However, I even didn't go to see puppies, who were TOO small. For instance, 1 ++ pounds at age 12 weeks. LIke I told already, 4-5 pounds I like the most
