Born Blue We just had 3 beautiful healthy little puppies~but one is blue. I have been reading everything I can possibly read about them~sadly it looks like there is no guarantee that he'll be ok. I am not going to sell him~and am definitely not putting him down. I read in a couple of sites on the net where the breeders said to put them down before you get too attached 'cause they are only going to have health/skin problems and 'cause greater heartache later when it has to be put down. I just can't do it!! & feel I will let nature take it's course with this little guy~unless I can see he is in great pain and suffering from his condition. I just didn't find much out there about what happens to these little guys as adults~just a lot of mixed 'opinions' but not a lot of pics or progress reports!! I am trying to follow the story on here about another 'blue born' named 'Mac'~and so far he is doing great~which gives me hope!!:) I will post some pics of our 'little blue' and try to give updates as well. Here he is just a couple of hours old. |
Definitely dont put down. We have had blue born adults on here. There used to be one breeder on here that had experience with them but I havent seen them for awhile. Search blue born pups on the search and Im sure you can pull up some of the old threads |
It is a genetic mutation that may or may not have serious health problems. My heart goes out to you. I could not put it down either. A breeder owed me a puppy for a stud fee. When I went to pick my puppy, she had a litter born that day by another stud and bitch. I was very upset when she said she was going to put down one of the puppies because it was blue born. I told her I would take the blue puppy instead of one from my stud's litter. She agreed as long as I would take it without papers, she wanted to pretend it was never born. I intended to just keep the puppy myself because I knew it was at risk to have health problems later on. My sisters daughter begged me for the puppy. Fast forward to today, my niece has the puppy, 7months old and very healthy with a white silky coat and blue green eyes. It is a mutation and the same pair should not be bred again. There are many threads on here about blue born pups. My niece did a lot of research and still wanted the puppy. She in her 30s married no kids by choice and they can afford it if she should need special care. |
My brian is shutting down on the YTers name, but I know she has a blue born named Mac. And he is the sweetest looking little boy. So happy you're choosing to not put him down. |
Found her! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/member.php?u=19222868 Kendra is her name. Forgive my brain fart. But like I said, her beautiful boy is a blue born as well. Maybe she could offer some advice as well. |
Thanks for all the support!! It's heartbreaking when a little pup is not so 'perfect'~but hopefully he'll be a lucky one & be healthy!! He is getting SO big & is the biggest of the three now!! I tried to post pics~but I don't see them~maybe the files were too big?!? I'll try again!!:) Yes~Taryn that's the Mac I'm following the story on here~Kendra's!! He is so cute & looks healthy so far!!:) I hope I have the same outcome for this little guy!! |
Aww congrats on your litter and Im praying for this baby boy!!1 Hope he is happy and healthy! |
KendraE just gave an update on her 8 month old blue born! Do a search on the forum and goodluck with your pupper! |

Puppy pics hmmmm~not sure why I can't figure out the picture thing~still trying! |
Hi!!! Just saw your thread!!! YES...We also had a little blue born...Im in the process as we speak posting his new smilebox!! Mack was born blue and I too was completely "freaking" out and horrified at everything we read on the web. We actually studded out our Male (my baby, Bevo) for pick of the litter and Mack was the only pup born. We decided to keep him and love him no matter what.... Today, he is a ball of joy. He is the sweetest, calmest baby I have ever been around. So far, he has had NO HEALTH ISSUES!! He is a weird, but BEAUTIFUL color and has the most beautiful eyes. Please, please, please dont look at your little blue born any differently. There arent enough of them out there to really know what to expect. Mack is a blessing....we love him dearly....and even though he still may have issues arise in the future, he is still my boy...and I will be there with him every step of the way.... If you need ANYTHING...please PM me.....and I would love to see pics of your precious angel!!! Love, Kendra, Bevo and Mack Brown |
Thanks Kendra!! I have been trying to follow Mack's story 'cause he looks just like out little guy when he was born!! I'm glad he is doing so great!! I hope I have the same outcome for our 'little blue'!! So far he is on day 5 and is up to 9oz~he is the biggest & strongest now in the litter!! I'm still trying to figure out how to post pics~I can't seem to figure it out?!? :O Do I need to load them to something like photobucket?!? |
No.... It's a size issue. I always go to windows paint and resize them. If you want, email me his pics to kendraearl@hotmail.com |

The YT members name is "KendraE" the dogs name is Mack Brown. She has a new thread up about Mac and how he has grown. He is a very sweet,8month old baby. Very active and full of fun. |
Oh~I see now where it says it can only be 200kb. I'll see if I can change the size~if I can't figure it out I'll email you them!! Thanks so much for all your help!! :) |
Molly's puppies 3 Attachment(s) Hey it worked!! Thanks Kendra~it was the file size. So here are the pics of our new litter~this is our first litter & Molly's too!! I tried to pre-educate myself as much as possible before I even purchased Molly~but never heard anything about a 'blue born' 'til I had one!! So I'm really quite bummed & concerned for this little guy~I'm just hoping for the best outcome for him!! Molly had an amazing delivery & her last 2 puppies were only 10 minutes apart. The first born was the bigger black one (6oz), the second one was the grey one (blue born) (6oz) and the third was the smaller black one (4oz). They all are nursing wonderfully & are now: 8.5oz, 9oz & 6.5oz. All are super~healthy so far!!:) |
Oh~I should mention they were born on Oct 22 and in these pics they are just a couple of hours old. |
update: puppies 3 days old 4 Attachment(s) Here are pics of Molly's 3 little boys 3 days old. The 'blue born' one already is losing the light silver & turning a pinch darker with a more 'taupe-y' look. I noticed that from other puppy pics that they do turn darker as they get older?!? I just had to add in the pics of Molly 'hugging' one of her little guys~it was just so sweet!! |

One important thing is to make sure not to breed either of those dogs again. Some may say just make sure not to make the same pairing (in other words they could continue to breed just not with each other) again but I feel like this is important enough to just go ahead and spay & neuter both sire and dam. Either keep them or sell them for pets. some may say... if you had champion puppies out of many good litters with the mom and the dad had never been tried before (or vice versa) then maybe you could try the proven one with a mate that had been successful before. I say it is NOT worth the chance to continue distributing that bad gene out in the yorkie gene pool to continue putting the possibility out there for this to happen again. You just do not know how many puppies will result from the mating of your dog that have the good potential to have that gene that causes blue-born pups. Not worth it. It is much more important to try to keep the gene pool clean and free of potential defects that can lead to heartbreak and early deaths. So PLEASE have both dam and sire spayed and neutered. I wish you the best with this little one! I pray he can enjoy years of good health! |
They look like fat, healthy little babies!! Mack was a very fat pup and I was sure he was going to be a "teapot", but he has finished growing and weighs 4 1/2 pounds. The other member was right...you should NOT breed either parent again. Are you planning on keeping him yourself? I do hope he is as lucky as little Mack. Again, there just arent enough Blues out there to compare outcomes. I found a couple of adult blues. They had lost a majority of their hair, but were otherwise healthy. Some had died before their first birthday. You just never know! Just give him the best life you can for however long that may be! If you ever have any doubts about him, Id be more than happy to give him a home! |
They sure are cute! |
And my heart melts!:) |
Beautiful babies no matter what color. :) Molly looks like an awesome mama. |
Yeah~I'm definitely not breeding this pair again!! I've read that you could breed them again just with a different partner~but I don't know if I'll do this~I think it's just too scary/risky!! I'm not totally sure what to do with this little guy either~I'm torn whether to keep him or not?!? There is a 'yorkie rescue' nearby & she said she would take him~but I just love these little guys so much!! & I would always be wondering if he was really getting the 'best' care 'cause I don't know her that well?!? If I decide not to keep him~I'd rather him go to you Kendra~'cause I can see that your little ones are so well taken care of!!:) |

Congrats on the litter! I myself have never encounterd this before and can not imagine the stress of not knowing what is best to do is doing to you. I found this site on Blue, Golden and Chocolate born Yorkies. It seems like she has done her reasearch. This may help you make an informed decision on what to do. I don't know who that rescuer is, but please, please be careful if you decide to surrender him to a rescue. If you don't know anything about her, you need to find out! |
I think if you are considering surrendering the pup to a rescue you should really get to know the rescue and also make sure they have familiarity to blue born pups because there are alot of misconceptions about them |
Glad mom and pups are doing well....The pic's are just too cute:) |
