I just saw your post on your blue boy and was wondering how he is doing?
5 days ago I too had a litter and a blue boy was born, I have been keeping a close eye on him to make sure is doing good, so far so good. I have also read horror stories and got scared and got more confused...This is the second time this has happened to us. The first time was almost 2 years ago, I read that to avoid the blue gene from happening again I should never breed the same parents again, so this time around I bred the same girl with a different male and still it happened. I have decided to get the female fixed. I feel there is such a "Taboo" with this happening and it makes one feel like a bad person or bad breeder although I know that it is not anyone’s fault this happens, it just does. Deep inside I am really hoping my blue boy makes it. I am now looking for a name for him for him..I have posted pictures of my blue born boy.

I've read that you should get both parents fixed when this occurs, so I would fix the male as well. I hope your little boy blue makes it too! Best of luck!

The gene that causes the Blue is a recessive gene, that means both parents have to carry it. Neither dog should be bred again to anyone because not only do they risk having another blue pup, they are passing on the recessive gene to new carriers. Not only should both the male and female be fixed, so should ALL of the pups they have had with any dog. I would also let the original breeders of all 3 dogs know that you have had blue pups so they are aware that the defective gene runs in their lines and they can act accordingly.

Hi~I just thought I would update on "Hippo"!!

I know what you mean about feeling bad a 'blue' showed up!! I did as much research & educating myself on the breed before I started & when this happened I really felt responsible!! However, now~the more I research about 'blue borns' the more I see that it happens more than breeders let on!! It's still a 'taboo' thing~but I think it's becoming less of an issue as more & more breeders are letting them 'survive' & are finding they are healthy~just not 'breed standard' with their coat!! So I would say~do not listen to 'fear mongers' & let them live~just don't breed them!! :)

I really was hopeful his head was showing signs of 'breaking colors' but I'm not so convinced yet~as his ears are already hairless at this point & his fur is very wiry & short all over!! However, his tan fur is thick & lush!!

I think he is adorable not matter what his fur though~he is so lovable & very intelligent!! He is the only one completely pad trained & is eating hard puppy food like a champ!! He is very healthy so far & very bright!! I'll get some updated pics on here of him too!!:)

Here are a couple of pics to show his ears. These pics were taken of him at 6 weeks old & you can see the hair already starting to disappear on his ears.

He is beautiful!! Bald, hairy.... It just doesn't matter does it?? I'm so glad he is still doing so well!! I think of him often!! Give him a big kiss from his fellow "blue", Mack!!

Here are some pics of Hippo at 7 weeks old!! ~I haven't been on here in a bit so I'm trying to play 'catch up' with his progress!!

You can see he is losing more hair everyday in the dark grey areas~but his tan hair is growing fast & full!! He is beautiful to me~no matter what!! :)

Thanks!! He completely stole my heart from day one just like little hippo has stolen yours!! I think what makes these guys super special is that all the statistics are against them!! I wouldn't trade the world for Mack....i hope our boys live many many years... Because I honestly can't imagine life without mine. Especially after we nearly lost him.... I wish Hippo a long, wonderful, happy life!!

hahaha~that's funny you mention the bow thing 'cause I was wondering~is it because I'm petting his head too much & the course hairs are breaking off?!? :O But I can see now that it's definitely not from that~it looks like it could be 'breaking colors' coming through?!? But it's pretty thin on top there!! & you can see his ears are completely 'hairless' at 8 weeks now!!

I thought he was going to look like this first picture, but now~I think he may be more hairless than this even, kinda like the second picture I found?!?

Thanks Kendra!! Yeah~it does make them 'special' knowing the odds are against them & you just want so desperately for them to be healthy!! I really hope the best for our 'little guys' too!! :)

Here's Hippo at 8 weeks!! You can see his ear hair (where the dark grey is) is now completely 'hairless' but the brown hair fringe on his ears is growing well!!

These pics were taken yesterday afternoon~it has been so mild out I thought I'd let the puppies see the grass for the first time!! They weren't out long 'cause it was a bit damp out still!! They loved eating at the leaves i missed raking in the fall!! :O We have been so lucky with the weather~it's hard to believe we're in December already!!

OH MY GOODNESS!!! SO cute, Im not even going to lie! I have a chocolate! I have had a blue and gold baby (he started off black thou) when he turned "blue" his hair was A LOT thinner. My friend has a baby who started of black and tan and is nearly WHITE?!? now. He has LOADS of skin issues, poor baby (she was going to breed but he is not a good "humper LOL" good thing she's finally given up and is fixing him).

Hi~it's been a while~but I thought I'd update in my blue born 'Hippo'!! He is just about to turn 1 year old & is very happy & healthy!! He is very active & vibrant~very easy to train!! He is so smart & absolutely gorgeous with his silver hair!! He is an awesome pet & our family just loves him to bits!!! :) I will post some pics of him!!

Here are some 5 month old pics of my Blue Born 'Hippo'!!!

As you can see blue borns are not quite the same as the 'standard' yorkie~they are a beautiful silver colouring with beige accent hair & his ears do not grow hair any longer than a bit of peach fuzz~so his ears NEVER have to be trimmed & his body hair is a bit whispy~so we keep it trimmed short for a clean look!! What can I say~he is beautiful & healthy & friendly & smart!!!

We love our little blue born~as do our neighbors & anyone who meets him!! I can see these little guys becoming their own special breed someday....like the chinese crested chichihuahua!!! I'm giving a shout out to Yorkie Blue Borns everywhere......'Give Blue Borns a chance!!!' :)

Here is our blue born 'Hippo' at 11 months old!!

I just thought I'd post this pic 'cause he was due for a haircut & you can see where the hair stays short like peach fuzz~on his ears & the fronts of his legs~but his face & the backs of his legs & under edge of his tummy & under his tail (where the tan color) grows~it needs a trim!!

His body hair grows out too~where the silver is~but it's thin & coarse & patchy~so we keep it buzzed short & he becomes a beautiful silver backed dog!! :)

He's a beautiful boy, but I just want to point out that not every dog with silver coloring is a blue born. This is referred to as light blue and while it’s not the preferred dark steal blue of standard, there are no health problems associated with silver coloring or light blue. Also, there are degrees to the blue born condition. Your little guy seems to have a slight case with only sparse hair. Many have an eczema type of skin condition, no body hair and some are blind. This is still a serious condition and these dogs should not be bred no matter how pretty they are. Glad Hippo is doing well, and he found a great home!

He resembles Mack so much! Are his eyes still blue/green like Macks? He is a cutie pie!! Im so glad Mack has a "blue" healthy friend out there!! Not too many to compare to and its great to know hes not alone! Happy 1st birthday soon hippo!!

Oh~I said the front of his leg the hair doesn't grow~but it's actually above his elbows where the silver is~it just is whispy there!! Wherever the tan colour is his hair grows normal~just not his ears for some reason!! But I'm not complaining~trimming ears can be tricky!! ;)

Yes~blue born is silver at birth!! There are silver & blond looking yorkies as adults= not the same thing!! (On an adult blue born the silver hair area is coarse & sparse)

I also have read in the meantime~that a blue born coming from a dark tan/blue saddle mom (which Hippo has) is a healthier blue born than one coming from a blond/silver mom?!? Any thoughts?!? Seems like there is still a lot of 'unknowns'?!?

Hi Kendra~I hope Mack is still doing great as well!! :) Hippo's eyes were a greenish/hazel color as a puppy~but they turned brown as an adult~not as dark brown as his mom's ~ but definitely brown!! :) I'll try to get his one year old pic on here soon!! :)

Have to disagree there...Macks mother is a very blonde/silvery adult. He has no hair loss...not at this point anyways.... And is for the most part a very healthy, happy baby. We have had our scares, but nothing compared to the numerous things I have read about blues!

Thanks for this Nancy, for pointing out that the beautiful light silver coloring is NOT the single definitive factor with blues....there will be people everywhere with silver Yorkies that think they have a blue-born! And that mutated gene also packs terrible skin conditions and blindness too (like you pointed out)....and breeding blue-borns doubles up that mutated gene and each successive litter born will degenerate more and more with each breeding. I know the OP is not going to be breeding this baby, which is good....we dont want this mutated gene "contaminating" the gene pool....and the parents of this baby apparently carry the gene so they should NOT be used for breeding either.

Yes, we have been very fortunate.... He has very fine cottony hair but it is beautiful! He is truly a miracle as is your little Hippo! Thanks again for the update!
