I was told that by Callie's old vet. When she was a pup. Hypo is scary though when Callie was having the issues as an adult after I handled it I had an omg freak out but then again I do that after I take a tick off so maybe its me.

Weird they would follow every rule of a good breeder except the 12 week one normally if they skip one step they skip a few.

That's kind of judgemental. They offered to keep the puppies as long as needed. Most of us that got a puppy from this litter chose to take them home around 8 weeks. Mainly because of Christmas time I think. If I really wanted to wait until 12 weeks for her they would have let me. You really shouldn't judge other people's choices of when they decide to get a puppy and whether or not their breeder was of good quality or not especially since you don't even know me, Mia, or her breeders. I think a lot of us here got a puppy at 8 weeks. I have yet to have any issues with her (minus the one flea who hitched a ride on vday) and she is now 16 weeks and just finished her last round of shots. She has bonded with every single person she's met so far and I've been training her very well. She has puppy play dates with other dogs and puppies on a regular basis. I am a behavioral therapist for kids with autism and have been using my knowledge from my job experience with training her (so much of it is the same). Luckily she is much easier than my kids at work! And much nicer.

I don't get into the 12 week debate issue but often find it an interesting read. I just have to comment that I was a bit stunned at your last remark. If I were a parent of one of your children you work with, you would be reported for that remark "and much nicer". I personally found it more judgemental than anything anyone has said on this thread and honestly quite offensive.

Oh gesh. You can't say anything without someone bashing you huh? Alright. Well I do like animals more than people. I like them more than kids actually. Probably due to the fact that their love is unconditional and they aren't as complicated as people. People are cruel, kids even. I love the kids I work with but I love my puppy more and always will. She will forever be the one who stole my heart until I have kids one day. And besides when you do the kind of job I do, you have to have a sense a humor and joke around with others about what you do because the burn out rate is so high. Don't worry, I'm not heartless, my kids at school are nice (not all the time, they have their moments). A typical day at work for me is getting bit, slapped, punched, spit on, etc. so yes I have to have a sense of humor or else I wouldn't make it. That's why I said my puppy is nicer, as in a joking sense, but I know it's difficult for people to have a sense of humor here. Maybe I should utilize the emoticons. Sorry for the confusion :) I do love my kids I work with and my puppy..:-P

Not judging you just going by the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America and personal experience. A good breeder follows the breeding club of there breed.

I get that but people will do whatever they want. The YT club can't control what people choose to do. I feel fortunate that Mia is such a great puppy and even more fortunate that I was able to rescue another Yorkie 2 years ago, who was unfortunately probably a puppy mill dog. She's 5 but she's thriving. However you can definaty see the difference with her personality compared to Mia's. Puppy mills can fall off the face of the earth! That's all :-)

People will do whatever they want but they should know all the facts and info before doing that so they can make an educated decision. It would be like not speaking out and educating about puppy mills "because people will do what they want".

I am going to say I have never fallen for the appeal to authority fallacy. I really could care less what any authoritative figure in any group says if it doesn't meet my protocols for sound reasoning.
So The YTCA says so isn't going to cut it for me.
However, as I said in my first post, I understood and agreed with waiting due to potential hypoglycemic issues puppies of toy breeds are known to be prone to, and some of the breeders on this site added other health concerns that a good breeder would be aware of, and would wait until at least 12 weeks to let their puppies go so that these problems will NOT be problems for the buyer.
All of these made sense to me and again, I agreed with them. Not because someone else said so, with no reason given as to why they are saying so that makes sense to me, but health reasons given that make complete sense that any one should be able to understand even if they do not agree with them.
When I am out and about with my puppies, people fall in love with them, they want to know where they can get one just like my guy and girls (I have added a papillon and a rescue maltese to my pack), they want information, and now I can help educate people and steer them away from pet stores, puppy mills and back yard breeders by emphasizing a GOOD breeder will NOT let a puppy go before 12 weeks, because of THESE reasons, and give them reasons that they can understand.
Like myself, many of these people have had dogs before, many of them have gotten puppies at 8 weeks, and many of them think that 12 weeks is an arbitrary age and do not believe the behavioral reasons often cited. However, health concerns are not subjective, as I said, and when facts about potential health issues are pointed out to them, they are much more willing to listen, and even follow the advise to get a puppy from a breeder who, among other things, waits 12 weeks to release their puppies.

I'm not sure how this has been going on for years, this particular thread is over a year (by a few months), yes, but not over two. Someone posted on my old thread to me, and I answered them, as it popped up in a search I was doing on health tests, not because I like looking over old threads I have made.

And why would anyone want their eyes poked out because of a thread from someone that is AGREEING that 12 weeks is a good idea, and because of this thread more reasons are given than just hypoglycemia, behavioral aspects and because the YTCA says so is a mystery to me.

More education should be a good thing, not something that exasperates anyone. More people knowing that at 8 weeks a yorkie puppy's teeth may not be fully erupted is a good thing. More people knowing that at 8 weeks, a puppy has not lost passive immunity from maternal antibodies and so is still highly susceptible to parvo, but at 12 weeks is likely building their own active immunity is a good thing. Breeders knowing that by 12 weeks a puppy has not shown signs of liver shunt is a good thing.

See,that´s the thing (and please do not take offense ;) ) the yorkshire terrier club of America isnt what the whole world goes by :)

I got Milo & Bella from a FANTASTIC breeder who gave me a legal 3 year genetic health contract.Her pups are BEAUTIFUL,they are healthy and she is fantastic with her dogs.
I still got Milo & Bella at 6 weeks old though ;) They were fine,and every other dog I have ever had has been fine too..all came home before 8 weeks.One of my past yorkies was 2lbs at the age of 7 years old (she was the runt,not bred to be that small) and even as a TINY pup (you can imagine),I had no issues with her either.None.
Here,once a puppy is weaned and has been eating solid food for a couple of days,it has it´s first shots and goes to its new home.It´s how it´s done and how all breeders work.Now,considering that our vets here are the ones who give those first shots and give the pups the OK,I dont see what´s wrong with that at all ;)

We dont have a yorkshire terrier club of Spain or super strict rules..pups are just sent home once their mother is no longer feeding them and it works all around,so the cycle has never been broken or messed with and vets are totally supportive.

Now,I dont think it´s ok when someone buys a 6 week old pup and then goes to work for 10 hours a day..I think that´s cruel and even risky,because I know that my pups would only eat when I was right there,so just as with any pup of any age,if a person isnt going to commit completely and not dedicate the time the puppy needs and deserves,then they have no buisness getting a puppy at all no matter what.

I have been a stay at home mom to my 3 kids for 16 years,so each time we have brought home a new puppy/dog,I have had more than enough time to give it my undivided attention and I have never had an issue with hypoglycemia or anything else,and as I said in my previous post,we cant get Nutrical or Karo syrup etc.I have bottle fed foster pups and had to hand them back over to the vet at 6 weeks old so that their new owners could take them home too.I have never had a dog with behavioral issues either.

This island is Touristic,we dont have puppy mills,backyard breeders and people dont intend to make a living with their dogs,that would be absurd here of all places ;) Infact,most of the best breeders here only have a couple of dogs and have maybe a litter a year.It´s not how they pay their mortgage ;)

In the UK the age for all puppies advertised to find forever home is 8 weeks, I got Merlin at 8 weeks Molly at 12 weeks and Milo was only 6 weeks found very little difference regards bite, feeding, social side ect. Just my experience

I agree with the 12 week rule. I've experienced animals having better ability to socialize when allowed to remain with their original Pack for that length.

However, I (personally) am willing to accept one at an earlier age (8 wks minimum) but, that's because I have an established Pack, with Dogs of varying age and gender for the Pup to interface with, where a balanced socialization process can continue. I profoundly admit, that is not my preference.

The 12 week rule is a good thing,it´s obviously a rule made in the best interest of the puppy and I get that..I respect it ;)

But lecturing every single newbie about it (especially if they already have their puppy at home) isnt going to change how things are done outside the US.
The people who join a forum like this are adults,and I must say that I find it very irritating when someone asks a question or says that they have had their pup since it was (example) 7 weeks old,and instead of being awnsered with the info they need,they get lectured as if they were badly behaved children.

I just think it´s more helpful to the owner and to the puppy to keep an open mind and understand that ALOT of people who join YT are NOT from the US,and those people may very well have recieved their puppy at an age you do not agree with,but going on and on about how bad that is and how awful breeders outside the US are (implying they do not care for their pups etc) is not going to change how things are done in another country ;)
We are not dealing directly with international breeders,we are dealing with yorkie owners and owners to be,so as much as we go on and on about it and lecture them,we arent going to change anything.
So why not just be helpful instead of judgemental? :)

Example: A newbie has her -7+ week puppy at home? Ok,so acording to America,that´s not ideal,but it´s done..So lets teach those people how to properly care for that puppy and keep it strong and healthy.
Being hostile just makes people not want to come back,they leave without the info they needed,and what good is that to the puppy?? ;)
