| 1st timer - What does your baby eat? Hi Everyone! i'm so excited to finally post and get involved. i have a 4 month old Yorkie male that i just adore with every bone in my body. He's going to be a big boy from what i've been able to esimate from other postings on here. He weighs in a 6 lbs now, although he is a super fussy eater. my question is: what does your Yorkie love to eat for dog food? Brew seems to tierd of his food very easily. I've bought 5 or 6 different types of kibble so far (acana, royal canin yorkie puppy blend, natrual food, medical (vet brand), and beniful puppy blend...off the top of my head). and he seems to like it for anywhere from 3 - 9 meals and then gets sick of eat and doesn't eat anymore. I've tried to add in the wet food to tempt him, but he won't go for the wet at all. I've just been switching them around to keep him interested. He loves the beniful crunchies, but they are crap, so i mix it with about 75% of the better kibbles. this morning even that was seeming like old news to him. He never has any problems digesting the new kibbles, and i'm figuring that dog food is better for him to eat the "people food". i had a yorkie/teacup poodle cross that lived to 14 years. All she would eat for the last 4 years i think was human food, so i'm really trying not to have that with Brew. Now i totally get the whole "he'll eat when he is hungry" advice. but we have had 4 hypoglycemia episodes with him from not getting enough food into him, so i've had to cave a bit to get him to eat. Vets have run mulitpul tests to rule out anything medicaly wrong with him. I'd love to hear your thoughts!!! |

| All four of mine eat that new stuff that has to be in the fridge. I can not think of the name of it. They love it and it is doing wonders for them. Their dry food is Purina one.

| He is adorable! And welcome to YT! I have tried several types of kibble too. Yorkies can be one of the most picky eaters! I still haven't gotten my Ahi to like one type of food. She refuses kibble. So I crush it and blend it in her wet food. She is on Evangers right now and even that she tends to turn her nose up at it. Good luck on finding something that he will love. Oh btw you will be able to join the Teapot club.

I have never ever had an hypoglycemic episode on my dog, he was just under 2lbs and just under 3months old when I picked him up. He is now as an adult 6.5 lbs. He has gone easily overnight since puphood without eating. Gone 8 hrs easily without eating sometimes when we are travelling. In my opinion something is wrong in "denmark". I'm not sure exactly what multiple tests have been done; but has a full blood panel been done;LS testing; thyroid expanded function profile, hyperuricosuria genetic test? Some food for thought here. On the topic of food; I feed a raw diet and have never had a problem with appetite in my Yorkie. If raw diet seems a little extreme for you, consult a dog nutritionist and develop a cooked meat with vege diet based food.

| ^ Agree with the above. You will create a fussy eater by switching so often. Take it from me! Jackson was always very picky. But, now, I've got him on Natural Balance and he's on a pretty good schedule. I do mix canned food for either breakfast or dinner. You've gotta just be tough... I do like to find one that he enjoys eating, or at least seems to. If he's totally just not eating one kibble but likes the other, I'll give him the other (if it's healthy for him and fits my requirements for him) and the one he prefers. I do tend to rotate foods, but I'll usually use about two bags of one flavor and then rotate, etc. Good luck -- he is a CUTIE pie! I have a big boy too. Jackson is 16lbs now at 3yrs old. He was 6lbs at 12 weeks old, hehe.

| Thanks for the feedback!! i should clarify with the hypoglycemia issues. He hasn't had an episode for almost 2 months, and it was when i was trying to be tough with him and only giving dry/softened kibbles that we had the problems. He's been great since i`ve flavored things up a bit. he`s eating at least twice as much a day as he was than. He did have full blood workup done with bile tests on two occaisions. Everything came back perfectly normal. tested stool for all worms. His first episode was when he was about 10 weeks old (2 in a 2 day span). and then maybe 3 weeks later he had another small bout. i think we've moved past that point now. His symptoms where wobbly body and head and very drowsy. i got some cornsyrup into him and by the time we got to the vet his sugars were all testing normal. i kind of think it was because he was growing so fast that he wasn;t getting in as much energy as he was burning. And he was definitly burning!!! |

| Maybe you could try mixing a little bit of wet food with his dry food. Callie is eating wellness core and some of the fresh pet that has to be kept in the fridge but she is such a picker unless we are playing then she runs and grabs two bites of food eats it plays some more and then gets a bite of food.

| How long after eating does hypo set in? If all the bloodwork is clear, it is possible that he just has a hard time regulating his sugar right now. 16 week old toy breed - it happens. As long as the vet is sure nothing is medically wrong, then it's just about getting him to eat. Ordinarily I would say feed one thing and don't give in; however, this is a serious situation, so you should be using what he will eat. How about just straight Beneful? Don't worry about the crap that may or may not be in it right now. Sugar regulation is much more important than ingredients in dog food. So pup is hospitalized everytime there is a serious episode of hypo and put on dextrose?

| Hi sorry i replied before, but it didn't post the medical update....unless it takes 12 hours to accept it (sorry newby) i'll try again and hopefully it doens't double up. he hasn't had an epiosde since i have caved a bit on the food. The first one about 2 weeks after we got him, he was 10 weeks old then (and less then 4lbs i think). he was really ripping around at our summer home. he almost seemed to be dunk and wozy and very sleepy. we called the vet emerg line and they told us to get some sugar water into him to peark him up. we did do this and got him eating again. he crashed again the next morning after a normal playing sesion so we rushed him to the vet. they tested his sugars (which were normal since we gave him some syrup to get him going before we left...didn't want him to go into shock) and did blood work then. Vets said everything came back normal and to keep an eye on him. the third and 4th episode were much more minor, but because i knew the signs of what happened just before, i was able to get the corn syrup into him before he really crashed much. these at 12 and 13 weeks. the whole time i had been just trying to get him to eat dry/softened kibble and some wet (with no sucess). I took him into the vet again for a full blood work, bile testing and stool testing. They also checked for liver shunt. Everything thet tested came back great. After i spoke with the vet about all this, i decieded i just need to get him to eat more. he would only eat one decent meal and day the other 2 hardly picked at. Once i put a little chicken in there he has been wolfing down 3 square meals a day of about 1/4 cup each time. he's just about 18 weeks old now, so i think we have moved past the sugar thing. i just wanted to not spoil him with the treats in there to get him eating as much as he is buring off in a day. he's definitly an active boy. Thanks for your feedback so far!!! |

YT 1000 Club Member | What an adorable boy and good luck with him. I brought my Romeo home at 10 weeks old and the little stinker stopped eating "his" food after two weeks. I too tried several brands and he turned away from everyone. Romeo's been with me for 26 months now and you could say he eats human food. I usually bake chicken, steak, salmon for him and mix with a tiny bit of brown rice. He also likes raw vegetables and fruits so I keep these on hand and he will "snack" on these throughout the day.

| All you have to do to avoid the posting delay is post more. the first few posts from newbies are sometimes monitored by moderators (just to make sure that it is spam free bc there can be major issues with that on forums). Very shortly, your posts will show up right away.

| Just to say welcome to YT. I can't really add to what has already been said except Howie can also be a pickie eater (he's 7 1/2 months) I use Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier 29 at the moment and I just put a little bit of cooked chicken, or bit of egg or veggies on top. He usually has a good 'go at it' around 7pm and just a small amount of the kibbles in the morning. I guess they all differ. Anyways congratulations and many years of happiness with your new little pal. |
