Flying with your Yorkie to MEXICO?? Hello, I am going to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico ends of October, and I have been looking for a dog sitter or boarding for dogs here in NYC, the thing is, I don't really trust any of the places i have seem so far, must of them keep the dogs in kennels, i DO NOT WANT MY BABY LUCKED IN A CAGE ALL DAY LONG.!plus she has long hair and needs to get her hair brushed daily and i am sure no one will take the time to brush her even if I am paying them to do so. So, I was thinking about bringing lola to Puerto Vallarta with me, she has all of her vaccines , and 4 months ago I a took her to the vet for her annual check. But my main concern is bringing her with me and having to leave her at the airport on quarantine. My last flight from costa rica to the USA was a nightmare and even when i had her papers some guy from continental told me i was going to have to leave her there for quarantine because they wanted to have a health certificate signed within 5 days prior to my flight,. Do you think that could happen in mexico too? i just don't want to spend the money in tickets and hotels plus her new vet's health certificate and having to cancel my flight cuz they want lola to be on quarantine. Has anyone brought their yorkies to mexico???Did you have any problems with the airline or agriculture department???

YT 1000 Club Member | Gee whiz that sounds like a lot of trouble, but... if you decide to board her, stay away from the Johnson City area !

Here is what my friend in PV said: "Has your friend ever been to PV? IMHO, depends on where she is staying, how long, and what time of year. Many people bring them and parade them on the beach etc. Beaches (all over) are one of the dirtiest places, full of germs, bacteria, fungus and more. Also, the sand is very hot at times and can easily burn fur babies little paws. Also, Yorkies are rare here, known to be "expensive American breed" and a target to thieves who either want to sell them on the black market OR hope the owner will pay a nice reward. They say, 'what's her name" ... followed by "how much did you pay for her?" I know people who live her Full Time and have Yorkies, and at least 2-3 times a year I see signs posted, stolen, reward. OMG, duh wake up ppl ... secure your home and patio etc because they want $ and will use your fur baby to get what they want. If she is going to be here for a long stay, staying in a secure place, I'd consider it. But, PV is NOT THE USA! Tiffy has a street name, though she'd never go to a stranger ... and more often than not, she is in my arms. Hence they say she is a diva!! lol She will have to have an International Pet Certificate of health signed by her vet, depending on how she is traveling, dated no more than 7 days before leaving by car and then you must cross the MX border. No more than 48 hours if flying. USA is more strict. Then when leaving PV/MX she must see a vet here and get the same form signed so she can reenter the USA. She must have the dogs Vaccine records. And, she should be aware we have MANY MANY MANY dogs here that are NOT vaccinated, street dogs and pets both. They cause problems due to our healthy vaccinated pets can be out, smell one whiff and get sick. Yorkies are more susceptible due their small size. Tiffy nearly died in 2006, she lost 2 lbs in 24 hours. All from an infection she picked up from smelling waste or ???? from an unvaccinated dog. Here, we have to do rabies etc every year. USA is every two years. She can't bring any open food or treats. USA will take it when she returns. MX, it depends on where she is entering. Here in PV, depends on the time of year. If the airport is not busy, if the workers are 'hungry/broke' they will be nasty and want bribes and steal things (treats etc). I've driven in and they never ever once checked Tiffy's records here in MX. Flying into PV, they want to see the International Health Certificate, vaccine records, etc. Tiffy stays in her carrier. In the USA, D/FW, I have to take her out so they can look at her. Airlines are worse than ever now. You have to be sure and make a RSVP for the pet to travel in the plane. They only allow so many per flight. Last time I flew AA, I paid $150 ONE WAY for Tiffy. Depending on the airport, some employees can be very very rude and insist the dog never leave the carrier. If she is only coming for a short vacation ... I'd leave her baby at home where she knows she is safe. Hotels/condo's ... with the maids etc ... IMHO not worth the risk that her baby may be stolen. If she is staying with friends, again make sure the house, windows, terrace/patio/balcony etc is secure as well as who has access ... maids, mozo's etc. IF she comes, I can give you the name of my Vet, he is a GEM, speaks English, won't charge her outrageous prices ... knows all about the International Health Certificate etc. Also, just in case god forbid she'd need something in an EMR. Tiffy is his #1 VIP patient!! Hope that helps! xoxox ps: if she comes, ask where she is staying .... when she is coming ... maybe she'd bring me a care pkg for my Diva!! " _______________ Hope that this will help. Last edited by fufufashions; 09-21-2011 at 09:11 AM.

Noticed you are in NYC, if you are flying out of Newark look into this place. It's about 25 mins from the airport. I have never boarded my dogs here but has very good reviews. K-9 Resorts Daycare & Luxury Hotel

Can you hire someone to come house sit & stay with your little girl? It might be a little more expensive than boarding but at least you know she will be comfortable in her own home & the center of attention and you won't have to worry about her. Check with your vet - they may know someone who would be willing to do this or a responsible friend or family member. Good luck Teresa Last edited by Teresamag; 09-22-2011 at 07:58 AM.
