I have 3 females and they all get along just great. No issue what ever.
Lizzie is 14 1/2, we adopted Willow (6) this past November and there wasn't a problem bringing her in. Theb we adopted Allie this past March, she is much younger (3) and more active and that as well has not been a problem. They all get along great.

I was hoping those with the girls could tell me a little more about there personalities? Or if you have both how do the girls differ from the boys?

rWell I have a boy/girl and I like that combination. My girl is very sweet and cuddly. A little diva. Shes not as playful as Chachi and She is not easy to train like he is. She can sometimes get jealous if you are giving attention to Chachi and not her. She wants all the attention. My Husband says she is like a living teddy bear

IMO it is more about personality than gender. I have two of each. Rubin never fought with Noah (Rainbow bridge at 18 yr.s old in June). Gracie came to us as a rescue, tiny underfed about 3 lbs. But took over as the boss right away. She snapped snarled and nipped. Rubin put her down and laid on top of her, after that he kind of ignored her. They get along fine now and she is still the boss. I think she knows Rubin can put her down with brute strength but chooses to follow her lead. She never snaps at him now.Noah totally ignored her until he died. The Puppies 5 & 6 months old fight with each other but not with Rubin or Gracie. Our Lab is a female and she is content to let Gracie be the boss. But now tiny Abba Boy is 6 months old and beginning to show some resistance. So we will see.

We're going through bringing in a new boy home now. We have an 8 yr old golden retriever Maggie female and an existing 4.8lbs male 7yr Rufus yorkie that thought he was the king here. Now we have 4mth old Riley male yorkie terror. Lot's of fun going on in the house now with 3 dogs running arround. Riley and Maggie get along just great they play tug of war and he follows her lead and chase's after her. Rufus is another story right now he looks at this little guy as what did you bring him here for I was top dog. Riley with non stop energy and play time while awake just seems to torment Rufus and Rufus sorta snorts at him and does his Elvis with the lip. All in all i see them starting to accept each other and will some day be great friends when Riley learns that he can't jump and chase and steal anything he see's. Keep them separated when not supervised and give it time. Go for it if you can afford the time and the extra attention and of course the added vet bills. But don't expect things to run smooth right off the start there will be a break in period for sure. Follow the protocol for introducing them to each other neutral territory.....Good luck and have fun with your boys. Sorry long post Rufus made me write it

in my case when i was fostering a female she would always attack my male but before when i would take my momo around other males they would attack him so i would say go with what u want im sure eveutally all dogs should get along i hope

I have 2 females and 2 males. The males get along better than the females. Tessie is 2 1/2 and Sassy is 1 year old. Tessie can boss the boys but Sassy rules over Tessie and intimidates her. Sassy picks on her all the time, especially if I am around, and Tessie will let her. Sassy also rules the boys, she tries to drag Calvin around the house. Tessie , Hobbes and Calvin played great together until got Sassy. Sassy can be so sweet but she makes sure everyone follows her rules. I think either 1 boy and 1 girl or 2 boys. 2 girls has not been great for me but none of the dogs actually fight each other but they do disagree sometimes, by growling at each other.

In our case - gender definitely did matter. Ringo is an aggressive, dominant Westie. We figured out during agility training that he really only liked small female dogs. He tended to pick fights with other males AND he didn't like dogs too much bigger than him.

So - size and gender were really more important to us than breed. But Lucy fit the bill - small and female!

I really don't think that I could have brought another male into Ringo's house and make it work.

If your dog is very laid back - and likes most all other dogs - gender might not matter so much.

For novice dog owners - both my breeder and my vet recommended the male/female combo.
