| ![]() I felt like that for a long time. Didn't help that Ellie HATES other dogs. Took a big risk getting him. Felt absolutely, horribly guilty through the entire process over "ruining her world". Within a month they are the cutest little playmates. A part of me is sad that I didn't push the issue with her earlier because I think she was lonely. ![]() Another part of me thinks I'm crazy for having two. Even with insurance, there are still expenses that really add up. And we spend a LOT of time at the vet with them.

So I feel bad that he's lonely. When I got him from the er, place that he came from, he had a bunk mate, a Morkie. And my husband would take pictures of him just curled up with her and I think it broke his heart when she left. He's a lover! ![]()

| ![]() Petfinder is LETHAL. I used to spend a lot of time on there and had to stop lol. I will get a second eventually. I've been planning on it for a while. I'm trying to wait for my life to get a little bit more "secure" before adding another (with me being in college, not having my own place yet). I want to make sure that on top of all other expenses that will eventually occur, that a second dog is affordable. In the meantime, I keep Jackson really busy. We go for a lot of long walks to help tire him out and get him the proper exercise, I get him to the dog park a few evenings a week if weather allows it (he's not big on hot weather, so I usually wait until 7pm or so), and we visit at my dads house once or twice a week with his two dogs. So he gets to have a lot of interaction with other dogs. Plus I am a dogsitter so he gets to see a lot of them a few times a week. But I know he would be really happy with his OWN little "sibling". He's definitely used to it just being us as well but I think after a week or so, he would be so happy. I've seen how he gets when other dogs come to visit and he's sooo thrilled to have a playmate. I almost think it will make it a bit easier on me at times (when I need to study or do work) they can play with each other (it's easier at my dads house - they entertain each other). A few issues I've worried about is that he is literally my little buddy. We do nearly everything together. Most vacations (which is rare anyways) he goes with, if I'm just running an errand (like going to the bank) he goes with me. If I go to a family's house, he's always invited and welcome. Things like that. But I think in the long run, those little things wouldn't be too difficult and most things wouldn't be much harder with two than it is with one. I think anyways. I still can't decide. lol

Funny how you mention that. P.s. At the Credit Union I work at we have dog biscuits for little doggies like Jackson who come into the building or go through the drive thru! Gotta love doggy friendly instirutions! ![]()

| ![]() Well, for us it has become much more difficult trying to get out the door with two (either we leave them both home and Ellie decides to bark her head off about it which she is getting better with or we take them both - this is when Ry runs around in the car like a feral animal, he has pooped on the seat, etc. Going to have to get a car crate for him, or we get downstairs and Ry always decides to poop before getting in the car and then we have to take care of that, etc.). It is HARD taking two. The thought exhausts me. Sometimes we take Ellie by herself though. It is hard to take both outside at once in the city. And I just gave up a short vacay with some close friends because I couldn't see both dogs going. With E's issues, it would have been $125 for 2 nights to board them. No money trees in my backyard.. Could have just boarded him and taken Ellie, but he was just coming off a traumatic incident and I didn't want to stress things more. So no vacay for me. And you don't know what you are getting, esp. with a rescue. Ry is very afraid of men and large dogs. He just goes off. We are working through this, but because it's fear, it isn't going to go away overnight and I certainly can't throw him into these situations head on right now. So that also dictates what he and I do. I highly recommend rescue instead of paying a breeder to add another dog to this world (unless you are looking for something very specific), but it's not easy for everyone. Don't get me wrong. We love him and he is our baby boy, but it is much less relaxing around here.

I agree that there is a difference in taking two places compared to one. It is a lot different than just having one in my opinion. And yes, I also agree it is a lot harder. Doable but harder. Many times I just take Rosie because she is used to going with me. I also agree about having different things to deal with when taking in a rescue. Mikki was not from a rescue. I got her from an individual but there were still issues to deal with. We are still dealing with things now. However, again it is doable if you really want it to work. But be prepared to face those issues. One more agreement with Ellie May, be prepared for double the expense and then some. I haven't had Mikki long but we have already racked up some vet bills on her. The last visit alone was over $200. Of course, she needed shots, heartworm test, etc. We had to do this because we didn't know her background. With a rescue, I think they take care of all of this before you get them. It is a tough decision. I know, been there. I think if it is meant to work out it will. ![]()

Then again, I often handle 3 dogs fairly well over at my dads house. We've all been camping together and it's certainly not as EASY but I've taken them all 3 for a walk before around the campsite (it's definitely easier with two) and also around my dads neighborhood, etc. I've rode with all 3 dogs on the back of the golf cart while someone else is driving, etc. And both of their dogs are dog reactive on leash. I don't find things TERRIBLY more difficult with two than one but it does complicate things a bit of course. Three is pushing it, however, and I'm not sure I'd ever own three at once by myself. My thing, too, is.. it's not like I'd be bringing a puppy or another dog into a really "calm situation". I mean, Jackson is not 'hyper' but active and very needy if that makes sense. He's often got to be go-go-go so I'm already used to that mindsight lol. It wouldn't a wild puppy coming into a situation where a dog is used to sleeping all day. He's got a laid back personality though, in the fact that he's willing to go anywhere and do whatever and not cause a problem. I can trust him completely in whatever situation I bring him into. He also looovesss to sleep in and will gladly sleep with me until 10am or later if I can. Obviously, adding a pup to the mix would change that. I'm basically talking out loud and showing you how I justify certain situations lol. But obviously I'm too scared to add another at the moment. ![]()

| ![]() I think if you are able to pay for all the expenses then go for it. Please remember that you will be doubling all of the expenses you now have. I have 4 dogs and the vet bills can sometimes be unreal but I wouldnt trade one of them for the worl

| ![]() I agree with Ellie and Baby Girl. Having more than one dog can be a joy beyond belief.... and work/cost beyond belief!! I have three. The two older ones are fairly easy, they are bigger shih tuz so they don't go with us that often. I used to get dog sitters to walk them if we were gone overnight. Then came the princess ![]() It is.. well.... interesting. I would not change a thing but it did change my life. Like Elle, I have turned down vacations because I had to do what was right at that time for my pack. Grooming is a major expense now.. so I have to prioritize some other things. But it is all good. In my life the payback far outweigh the cost.. but that is me. Also.. they do play alot and is fun to watch!! The one thing I would change... I homecook now.. and I miss the days that I guilt free just poured kibble in their bowls.. awww *sigh**

For whatever reason, I find it hard to clean up poop when walking two dogs. If one barks at somebody, they both bark, etc. And it's easy enough for a few hours. But day after day for 15ish years.I love them both and wouldn't change anything, but wow they are a ton of work. And then I thought there is no way I'd get a dog that needed more vetting than Ellie. That predication was evidently wrong. He is already been to the vet 5 times and it will be 6 times very shortly here. We also narrowly escaped the ER twice. Could have taken the "they only go in for serious issues" approach. Problem with that is I'm not sure which trip we could have avoided (the secondary infection from kennel cough, the mutilated ear, the second DHPP vaccine, the U/A when he wanted to pee every 5 minutes, or the follow up to that bc it didn't go away/dealing with liquid stool at the same visit - neither of these problems are better yet). Sooooo I'm tired. Wouldn't want to discourage good owners from getting another, but have fun with it as they team up to overtake you. ![]()

| ![]() I avoid petfinder like the plague. I am WEAK, I tell you WEAK!!!!! And being as I am going back to school... No no.. I don't think that another dog is a good idea at this time. I might be able to get Pixie in.. But TWO? No way. I do want another though... At least. Maybe two more. Then we can all have dogs and not share, lol. Yorkies are potato chip dogs. And apparently they have to power to make normally rational people insane. |
