| Afro Puff Yorkie I brush Lazzy everyday and his hair is very soft and fluffy but lately I am noticing that the roots of his hair are coming in gray and it is pretty knotty down there. I really have to take extra time to come it out. Is this normal? I know there are "cotton-coat" yorkies but my little guy is downright nappy. The hair on his head and face though is tan (with black tips) and very silky - no knotting there.

| You are dealing with a puppy coat. After it grows out and is trimmed off, then you will be more likely able to tell what kind of coat he will have and if it will get knots in it. If it still does that after he reaches maturity, then you may wish to keep his hair in a puppy coat.

| I really want him to have long hair so I can put bows in it, etc... I really miss doing that with my daughters How long do they keep the "puppy coat"?

| I don't know how old your puppy is, but they usually begin growing out their puppy coat at around 5 months of age and it can continue for around 3-4months, if I remember correctly. Someone correct me if my recall is wrong. They will usually have their adult coat in by a year to a year and a half.

| He is 18 weeks old now so I guess the gray I see at the root is it "growing out". Is there any type of detangler I can put on it? I don't want to hurt him. He goes into full attack mode when I pull out the brush. I think he WOULD have locs if I didn't sit here and comb thru it so diligently.

| They have a bunch of different detanglers with different scents. The one I have is called Buddy Splash by Cloud Star in the relaxing Green Tea & Bergamot scent. I know Petco carries a bunch of different sprays too.

| I have a cottony coated pup and the brush is totally a no go. You need to use a metal medium toothed comb and the detangler spray. Might be better to just cut it all off and hope what grows in is better. Do it now before it gets too cold. |

| I believe my zoey has a cotton coat, but the changing hair color that is growing in at the roots seems like it has a more silky texture to it. Is that normal? I am so tempted to give her a trim so that her lighter silver/gray color will show, but I'm holding out! |

Now in Lucy's case, I ended up having to re-shave her, as the vet diagnosed ringworm not long after I did it... So it would've had to been done anyway. But still... I wish I could have just left it alone!!! Last edited by ASTPhi877; 08-16-2011 at 05:41 AM.

Awwww! I hope Lucy recovered from that ringworm bout! Did she really lose the "baby" look? I wonder how long will it before the silky lighter coler comes in fully. Im impatient!

| Silver had the same problem but we got her shaved at the beginning of summer because she was just to hot and it was so hard to comb, but now the hair growing in is so soft and silky.
