Why that name.... ? Just thought this would be an interesting thread to post. :) Every single time someone asks what my dog's name is and I say Macy. The first thing they always ask, 'Did you name her after the mall, Macy's?" NOOOOOOOOO. I didn't name Macy after Macy's. I just love the name and I think it fits my dog perfectly. Heck, I wasn't even thinking of Macy's when I named her! lol. Just a name I love. :) So why did you name your dog whatever you named him/her? |
Chachi we named after the character on Happy days we were watching a reunion show and thought it was a cute name. Jewels my daughter who was then 5 named. She also named all our cats; Twinkle, Miracle, cutie pie, Pumpkin and Masqurade. |
My sons named Sammy after Sammy Sosa, the baseball player. |
I like the sound of Rubin and it means son. My small little stud dog is named Abba, it means father/ daddy. Grace because I believe in God's saving grace. Genevieve Joy(Ginny Joy) was named for a friend and joy because she is a joy. |
Jackson was named after Johnny Cash's 'Jackson' but I also loved Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 so it just fit. I have a problem with names, I am obsessed, lol. I'm pretty sure I have my future dog already named with no plans for a second dog yet, haha. |
cute. I thought of the store when I saw Macy. I thought, she loves to shop!! It is a very cute name. Sammy... I wanted to name him something Asian-- he is a lasha (they are from Tibet) I was outvoted. So he is Sammy.. Samuel Adams (beer) Remy -- the finest top grade Liquor - Cognac. I was thinking Brandy, but got voted down again so settled on Remy- I like the name better. Bailey.. my dtr named him. His sister was Zoie I named her. Friends call him Bailey Irish Cream (or tank because he is a big shih tuz) The funny part.. I don't really drink. I glass of wine knocks me out. |
My daughter, Alex, named Nala after the little girl lion on the Lion King. It is quite fitting because she stalks our bigger dog and pounces on her like a little lion. :p |

I honestly don't know where Tibbe's name came from - just came into my head! It fits him - he's a little different! Had me up half the night training and going through all of his obedience tricks, etc. He loves to work. He's a dream dog! |
My b/f came up with Ozzy (Ozzy Osbourne). It was the only name everyone in the family agreed on, after we all sat around throwing out names for about two hours. I wanted Kato, because he is like a ninja. Small, and so quiet he just seems to appear out of nowhere, and he disappears from sight in the blink of an eye. But I like Ozzy (Oz; Oz-man; Oz-some; Ozzy-wozzy) too. |
Tessie is really Princess Contessa, named after her mother. Hobbes- Sir Calvin Hobbes, after Calvin and Hobbes comic strip, my sons favorite. Calvin- Sir Calvin Rocky. after the comic strip. Rocky is the breeders nick name for him. Didn't know we were getting another yorkie when we named Hobbes. Sassy- Miss Sassy Baby, just liked the name Sassy, Baby was breeders nick name. She has really lived up to her name. Hobbes, Calvin and Sassy are from the same doggie mom and dad but different litters. |
The name Sophie just came to me when I first saw her at two weeks old. When we finally were able to bring her home the name seemed to fit and my husband liked it. It made me think of soft and adorable and our Sophie is all that and much, much more. |
Mina (strong willed warrior). Ya it fits, she is trying so hard to be the alpha and not making it. Our chi is afraid of the waterbowl and the other night he was creeping up on it,Mina sat and watched. About the time he stuck his head in the bowl,Mina pounced on him and he shot off like a rocket. I started with a very long list of girl and boy names with meanings. My daughters and I whittled it down to 3 of each. When I knew that my baby would be a girl,I spent some time looking at her picture in my email and just knew it was the right name. |
We were planning on naming her Zoey but when we saw her my girls thought she looked like an Ella. Most of the time I call her Boo and my 9 year old calls her Scoot. |
Tiki's name was derived from "Nautique". We've had Correct Craft Natuique ski boats for the last 25 years. We didn't want to use the "tique" spelling so changed it to "Tiki". We named our new baby boy Tucker just because that was the name we ALL agreed that we liked and it fit his personality to a " T "..We call him Mr. T :) |

I like unique names too. Not SOOO unique that they are like, totally wacky, but just different and not very common. Jackson is becoming fairly popular and it's annoying, haha. I've seen/heard of a lot of kids being named Jackson lately. But at the time of naming him, I hadn't ever met a dog or a person named Jackson. |

The names I picked for my daughters had meanings. Amy means beloved, and Karrie -- which is a form of Carolina --same as Colleen. They complained, like you, that they had too many friends with the same name. oh well.... what can you do lol A couple of names I wanted.. Jessica Denise for one.. I could not use because I had friends that had dogs with that name. lol I should have used them because the friends moved, and my daughter would never had know she was named after a dog. lol |
I read somewhere a while ago that the most popular names given to pets are names we give our children. ;) I had my son help me with both our dogs. When Suzi came up it is so cute and upbeat that it fit perfectly. When we went through names for our shih tzu the name Miely popped up , and it also fit. I was not thinking Miely Cyrus ...though. |
Our little boy is named Baci after the Italian chocolates because of his coloring :) People ask us "oh did you name him after the game, baci??" Ummm no does my little prince look like a ball?? LOL |
Zoe, named by my daughter (who rescued her) and her boyfriend (he is Greek), means "life" in Greek. I thought it should have an "i" or "y" on the end, but that was apparently not Greek. Cindy, named by my kids after the movie The Grinch, which was out at the time, so her full name is Cindy Lou Who. Cooper, named by my daughter after the Mini Cooper, her favorite car at the time Emma Grace again--named by my daughter, after the baby Rachel had on Friends. ...My daughter, BTW is able to convince anyone of anything. I've always said she could sell ice to an Eskimo, for twice what it was worth and they'd end up wishing they'd paid more than they did. I guess she was convincing with dog names along the way! We also had: Jack (Yukon Jack, an American Eskimo, my first "baby" who lived to 14 and I still have dreams about him. Baxter, a cavalier, I named him! He was very sick with some sort of brain seizures and had to be pts at 3. Cats: Pickles and Tickles, given to my daughter, and named by her, at age 4 (thanks, Mom:mad:), Casper and Minnie, big and white and tiny and squeaky respectively ;), before I was married. I know I'm forgetting someone... Thanks for the thread, it's fun to remember them all! |
I really like the name 'Ian.' We chose the name before we got him. |
I named my Lizzie (Elizabeth Marie) it just seemed to fit her. Willow Grace was named by her foster mom and I added Grace as her middle. Allie Nicole was named Alex (she was an owner turn in to rescue and that was her name) I thought it sounded like a boy so I changed it to Allie Nicole. |
I really, really enjoyed reading all your posts, everyone!!! It's interesting how we think differently why we named our pets. Really cool. Keep 'em comin!! :) |
Kobe got named after Kobe Bryant from the LA Lakers. Hahaha. Then I got Jada. I was gunna name her Eevie, but then I didn't wanna be mean to her since Kobe has a celebrity name....so then I started thinking of celebrities. I didn't really like them. So then I was gunna name her Jade, but I don't really like one syllable names. So I just kept repeating Jade over and over and over again. All of a sudden, it started sounding like Jada. So then I was like "Hey Jada! Just like Jada Pinkett Smith!" A celebrity name! So that's how Jada and Kobe got their names...from celebrities. Lol |
Thor because he was so tiny he needed a BIG name LOL! |
Nilla! Quote:
I had a list of names picked out that I liked (Miette -- still love that one, Pippa, and Nilla), and my husband's favorite out of those was Nilla. I decided to side with him and call her that because it's very cute, it's not too human-y (I don't like when you name a dog something and you know a ton of people with the same name or call it out and someone else responds) but not a common dog name either, and it's easy for other people to pronounce! Plus, when I explain what her name is I can just say 'Nilla Wafer' and people get it, lol! I didn't intend on giving her a middle name, but I usually call her Nilla Bean (like vanilla bean ice cream) unintentionally when I play with her, so she'll probably think her name's Nilla Bean. That's okay though, she kind of has the look of vanilla bean ice cream. Sorry guys, I'm a rambler. |

Ours is obvious.... Allie and Noah are named by my daughter after characters in her favorite movie/book, The Notebook. Allies full name is Allison Joy (Joy is my first name) and Noahs is Noah David (David is hubby's first name) We are looking at another boy and having a heck of a time with a name so far. I am letting the breeder know yes or no and deposit Saturday!:):D:eek: |
I named Princess this because it is the rarest dog name ever.:D I planned on spoiling her rotten & I thought I could find so many "personalized" things for her as I was unaware of the massive yorkie market! I'm known for giving strange nicknames & her's is either Puppy or Principal since she does run things quite a bit! If I adopt a young one I'd like to name her Luna Lovegood after Harry Potter's friend. My last name is Goodacre so her name will be Luna Lovegood Acre.;) But that's quite a ways away. There are so many cute names. Lil Sis, I like your themed names. My mom had dalmatians- Tequila & Margarita.:) |
