Weight Gain

Can anyone please tell me what the " average " weight gain a puppy should be gaining each week. My baby will be 12 weeks old next week, and from 4 weeks to 8 weeks he gained 200 grams (7.05 ounces) every 2 weeks. From 8 to 10 weeks he gained 300 grams (10.58 ounces), and now from 10 to 12 weeks he has gained 350 grams (12.35 ounces). He now at 12 weeks is weighing 1300 grams (47.62 ounces or 2.97 pounds). Hes very active running all day playing and doesnt look so big but according to the "weight charts", he is going to be if he carries on at this rate.

The growth rate slows considerably. Your puppy will likely be about 6+ pounds full grown. However, most good breeders will say that you never know what will happen until they are actually full grown.

when we chose our little Logan he was tiny and the breeder told us they couldnt guarentee what grown weight he would be as these things can never be exact which we knew as Lily grew into 11.5lbs of yorkshire terrier however she thought he would be reasonablly small reaching maybe 5lbs at the most when he was fully grown. He attended for his 12 week check last week and is already over 3lbs as he is 1600grams, which going by the rule of double the 12weeks weight would make him around 6-7lbs adult weight so not so tiny a boy after all

We never know how big or small our babies will be all we know is that they are sure to be cute

I just dont understand the concept of the different sized yorkies.. How can a yorkie coming from 3lb and 4lb parents grow into a 10lb yorkie. Yes i supose its a genetic thing or it could be a overfeeding thing. everyone of my neighbours have told me not to feed him too much as they will grow big. I really would like to keep him within the 4lb-7lb yorkie limit as he is a smally without have to worry too much on controlling everything he eats. I love my yorkie because hes a yorkie and a small dog, if i wanted a pitbull i would have brought one. Please dont take offense with the last comment, its just i have an idea how yorkie is and want mine within the standard size limit.

There is a good chance your baby will stay within that weight range according to the weight they are just now however i don't know that feeding makes a huge difference only difference that would make is on fat or thin Yorkie and the vet can easily say if your pet is overweight or not My vet said there is no way Logan will get to be 11.5lbs like Lily as he is much smaller than she was at his age and is very much different than her in all ways.

I dont know why puppies are all different in sizes i guess it just happens that way i know lily who is 11.5lbs is the smallest in the litter and yet the same mummy and daddy first litter of puppies ranged for 5lbs to 14lbs strange eh Still Lily at 11.5lbs is still small to us she is still very easy to carry and very easy to look after so try not to worry about the size.

Lily reached around 11lbs at 6months and her weight hasnt changed much from then maybe going up and down half a pound or so. If Logan gets to 6lb grown weight then he will be half the size of Lily which will seem like a very little boy to us but either way whatever size he gets we lurve him lots

Thanks for your feedback and opinions. i feel a few more settled now, knowing that he will probably only get fatter and not bigger if he eats a little more food. He is very active so a little plump on him wont do him any harm as im sure he will burn any puppy fat quick enough . Thank you once again for any doubts i think this site is great.

Mom and Dads weight is only a small part in genetics....Their parents or their grand parents could have been 10 lb, so unless you go thru a breeder that researches as far back as 5 or 6 generations...which most should, if they want to stay within the AKC standard...so some where in your babies line, there was a good size yorkie...And the chart, you really can't go by that...just like humans, Yorkies are going to be what they are going to be 6lbs or 10lbs and feeding them to much has nothing to do with there growth while they are pups...and a yorkie in my 15 yrs of owning the 4 yorkies I have, they really don't stop growing until about 2 yrs old...they may stop gaining./growing in between 1 yr and 2 yrs...than they fill out usually adding another few oz's or a lb...depending on the yorkie, you just won't know until around the 2 yr mark, what size your baby is going to be...my Bella was 8.6 lbs and very slim at a year old and stayed at that weight until she hit the 2 yr mark...than she filled out she is now almost 3 yrs old at 9.9 lbs and has maintained that weight and she is by no means over weight at all.

Your dogs are really lovely and i totally agree that your Bella being above the standard size doesnt look over weight or unportional. She is beautiful. I have come to the conclusion that along as "BIG" is not overweight anytime in his lifetime, im not going to stress that he will be turning into a bear . It just concerned me a few as the daily amount of food stated on the bag of the puppy food im feeding him seemed alot when i weighed it out, and thought that maybe he will burst if i try to give it to him all... As long as hes healthy and gaining weight (but not too much), im not going to eat my self up. Thank all of you for your comments i appriciate all your feedback and experiences

I wouldn't....even tho Bella is 9.9 lbs, she is still a very small dog....Ivy (female) & Harley my little male...are 10 mos old...Ivy Lou weighs 5.7 lbs...I think she is going to be around the same weight as Bella maybe a little less, by 2 yrs old but, Harley my little man...is only 4.7 lbs very slim and I think he is going to be standard 6 lbs (maybe) or less...I will be surprised but happy if he makes it to 6-7 lbs...I prefer 6 - 9 lb yorkies, they are tuffer, stronger and not as fragile as a 3-5 lb yorkies...Bailey my 15 yr old RIP baby, was only 5 lbs...very healthy but I was always worried about hurting her cause she was so small....so I think bigger is better.
