| Getting a new puppy I am getting a new baby boy puppy and I have an 8 year old girl yorkie (who a has been the princess). I am looking for suggestions on how to introduce them? Should I keep them separated (in different rooms) for a period of time? I want to have the easier transition for both of them :-)

| I have 4 yorkies but I never separated mine when I brought in a new one. Of course there isn't a big age difference. The way mine and my husband schedules are they are never alone too many hours. My last female Sassy (8 months) has been the most difficult, she wants to pick on the oldest girl Tessie (2 years) so I have to put her in timeout sometimes. I did separate them some at first because the other 3 did not like Sassy and I was afraid they would hurt her. Now she is the one that terrorizes them. I would put her in the laundry room with pads, water and toys and a bed. None of my dogs are crated they are confined to the kitchen /sunroom with a gate. They all get along good now except for a few arguments. Good Luck I am sure they will get along good it just takes a little time. Just don't leave them alone together until they get used to each other

| First off, the introduction is very important- if at all possible you should try and introduce them on neutral soil- like taking them for a walk together outside, or having them meet and play at a park. Once home, set up the puppies expen in a place in the house where you and your current dog spend a lot of time- this way your current yorkie will see the puppy in there and start getting used to the puppy being around without actually being able to get to the puppy. The start slowly giving them short, supervised play sessions each day- you want each session if possible to end on a high note- this means you shouldnt allow them to play so long that the older dog gets too annoyed by the puppy. As they start to interact you will know when to increase the play sessions. Good Luck!

| We started Mina out in a Pac n Play (portable playyard/crib for people babies). The floor is vinal and it allowed us to have her in the den where we all are,all of the time. The other 5 dogs could look at her and she them, but noone could touch. This went on all of the first day. Then in the evening we let her have time in the floor, but for only about 10min. The next morning I started her going potty outside with just one of the other dogs (the one I trusted the most). As the day went on the time out of the pac n play was several short visits with her and adding a dog from the pack to potty outside. By day 4 or 5 she was going out with everyone every hour and a half and getting to play with the other dogs. Their ages are 14yrs to 6yrs. I think that they all take turns with who plays with the baby. Good luck with your new baby! |
