| ![]() Last year a friend of mine and I were returning home and saw a cardboard box sitting beside our driveway. The day was extremely hot too and had reached over 100 degrees. Beside the box was the most adorable bundle of plunder I have ever seen and could not believe my eyes. Sitting beside the box was what I later was told by two vets was an approximately 5-week old Yorkie. We named him Rocky, because he's really a tough guy and we love him like a child. I know that the breed standard says that a Yorkie shouldn't be over 7 lbs., but Rocky is not a small dog by any means. He weighs about 12 lbs. and is about as tall as our Jack Russell Terrier. Both vets that we take our dogs to, told me that there are pure bred Yorkies that get that large, and I've seen two that appeared to be all Yorkies that were at least that large. My question is, how can I tell if he's a pure bred Yorkie without knowing anything about his parents (DNA?) and also, can a Yorkie be that big? I had his long fur clipped off because of the summer heat here but I can post photos of this little dog if it would help identify whether or not he's really a Yorkie. Just curious about it as it in no way impacts the way we feel about this little guy who's become part of my family real fast. He even gets along with our Jack Russell who's two years older than Rocky. Thanks for tips. Marie |

| ![]() Yorkies come in all shapes and sizes so it is very possible that your Rocky is purebred. You should post some pictures of him! We all would love to see him ![]()

| ![]() Hello and Welcome to YorkieTalk. Glad you were able to save Rocky from the heat. My Vivi was a stray and I really wanted to know what breeds she might be, so we did a DNA test on her. (Found out she was mostly a Min Pin) The tests are rather expensive, so it was a birthday present from my DH. Not sure if they are 100% accurate, but personally I am glad we did the test for her. Anyway, hope you post pictures soon. ![]()

| ![]() Yorkies are a very challenging breed because of the lines that go back to the begining. I have seen siblings ranging from 2lbs to 8lbs. Hard to believe they came out of the same bitch. |

| ![]() Awww. I'm so glad you found him and he found you! If you post some pictures, more knowledgeable folks than myself will hazard a guess about whether or not he looks like a purebred. Not that it matters at this point because he sounds like a beloved family member.

| ![]() Someone must have known you would give him a good home. I have 4 Yorkies they all look different and the weigh 6-16 lbs. You should join the Teapot Club on YT this is for larger Yorkies.

| ![]() A friend of mine had the doggie DNA done on one of her dogs and I think it was about $100.00 . It isn't necessary but can be fun.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | ![]() Is always the posibility of him being a silkie terrier, they look just like yorkies to the untrained eye, can you post a picture of your baby? I breed silkies and love them..right now I have a pregnant girl who is 11 pounds pre prego weight.. welcome to YT.. |
