| Is my 3lb Yorkie bulimic? Eats paper and makes herself vomit in mornings She weighs only 3.2lb and is very skinny. One Dr. said she has a small liver and maybe needs a sonogram- He also said that dogs often vomit in the a.m. if they are hungry. She often chews the edge of the wee wee pad and then vomits- any ideas why or if she needs help? Otherwise she is energetic and active and her poops are fine- except sometimes there is paper in them.... |

| Wish I could help you, but that just sounds strange. What kind of food do you feed her and how much and how often?

| Yes, alot of dogs will vomit bile if their tummy is really empty for too long (like in the morning). it's pretty common for some of the dogs that use pee pads or paper to chew on them, it's not to make themselves vomit though, they just find it fun for whatever reason. I'd just not let her do that, obviously it's not good to be eating paper, and feed her first thing in the AM as soon as she's done pottying - that should help with the vomiting. You can also try moving her PM meal a bit later, or give a little healthy snack before bed so there's something in her tummy overnight, don't over-do it though. As far as being skinny, I'm assuming your vet checked a stool sample for parasties (worms) recently? Also, what food are you using? If it's not high quality, that could be the reason she not gaining appropriate weight and trying to each other things besides her food.

| I would recommend cloth/washable pee pads and leaving a small bowl of high quality dry food out for her at all times. Give her a couple spoons of can food 1-2 times a day and she should slowly gain a little weight. |

I ordered this wee wee pad tray after seeing a picture posted by another YTer. My dog immediately started using his pad when I put it in the tray, he seemed to get used to it right away. It may help keep your baby from chewing on her pad: Amazon.com: Floor Protection Tray Medium: Kitchen... Several reviewers of the tray say that it prevented their dogs from chewing on the pads. It probably wouldn't help with her vomiting issue as a whole, but it might prevent her from ingesting the paper or the plastic liner of the wee wee pads. | |

| It could be that she just likes to chew and eat random things like lots of dogs. It could also be pica (a craving for non-food items) which is a symptom of a medical problem. If the vet is saying her liver is small, then she needs to be assessed for liver disease which is very common in Yorkies. Your vet can run some bloodwork, but if they think a sonogram is indicated, then she needs to go to a specialty hospital as soon as possible to have one. A skinny Yorkie who is displaying pica-like behavior (assuming there are no parasites) and whose vet thinks the liver is in question needs diagnostic testing.

| Thank You all soo much- soo helpful. She is allergic to beef and egg and all birds- so we are vegetarian-mostly- Dogs eat California Naturals or V-Dog. Sometimes fish. She has been healthier since I got all the meat out of her diet- no more rashes. I think it may be a stomach thing because when she eats later at night-she is ok in the a.m. How much cheese can they eat? Vet wanted to check her liver b.c. he thought she couldn't gain weight- She did- then stopped eating until she got back down to 3.2lbs. She has none of the other symptoms for the liver shunt stuff. Where can I get washable pee pads? sounds great! |

| I have a poodle that throws up first thing in the morning. So at 10pm every nite we have snack time. All 6 dogs (even the puppy that has only been here 4 weeks) sit in a circle around me and everyone gets a small amount of kibble. Some for the dog that throws up in the morning and some for each of the dogs that need meds before bedtime. The poodle stopped throwing up in the morning and everyone seem to sleep better. |

| Amazon.com and most pet shops carry the washable pee pads. I have seen some on yorkietalk for sale with cute fabric patterns. If the vet suspects a liver issue, I would definitely want to find out before it's too late. You would probably also want to ask your vet about what you can feed your baby that would help her put on weight since she has so many allergy issues. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Dogs don't suffer from bulimia, they aren't capable. That's a human psychological disorder. Some dogs will vomit when they have empty tummies because they are nauseated. Some eat grass or other funky stuff to help induce the vomiting to help them feel better. Since this seems to be happening frequently, it would be wise to ask for a referral to a specialist to see if there is something else going on.
