| I have a white puppy mill Maltese / Shih Tzu. Red/ brown stains around the mouth, paws, private parts and eyes, as well as smelly ears are all signs of internal red yeast. This is not to be confused with the normal "eye boogers / sleep" that most dogs get. The Angel Eyes does have a low grade antibiotic, but for some reason, it does kill the red yeast. It eliminates the constant itching in some dogs. I have used Angel Eyes on foster puppy mill dogs, and they they look so pretty when the new white fur grows in place of the stained fur. It helps them get adopted when they look pretty. Also, I use a pet food that does not contain beet juice. Beet juice is not the main cause of tear stains, but it can be a contributing factor. I have had great success with Angel Eyes. If the yeast is because of damp, floppy ears, Angel Eyes will not work until the ears are cleared up first. Zymox in the ears works best for me. Its better than any prescriptions my vet has ever given me. Many puppy mill dogs fight yeast all their lives. It's just my opinion, but Angel Eyes has worked great for me.

| I've research it more out of curiosity - Angel Eyes won't necessarily cause you to "see" any problems, not short term anyway, but yes, it does contain anti-biotics, so the problem there is if your dog needed to take an antibiotic for some reason, it may not be as effective because their system has a constant flow of small amounts of it in their system. The other thing about something like that, it can damage their immune system by killing too much "good bacteria" in the intsetines. Idk, I've read reviews that some people love it and get good results, but I wouldn't touch it. I just started using Nature's Variety too, and I did read a few testimonials on their site by owners who switched to it and tear stains/eye boogies going away

| Some dogs are prone to food allergies, yeast based ear infections, or even teething problems. This causes an inflammatory reaction, which in turn upsets a dog's PH balance. *The result is a breeding ground for red yeast. *Basically, the bad bacteria in the gut kills off the good bacteria. *This happens in humans too. *The standard vet cure is a low dose 10 day cycle of tetracycline, which again balances the GI tract. The active ingredient in Angel Eyes is Tylosin *(similar in structure to Erythromycin). *It is a Macrolide Antibiotic, meaning it does not kill bacteria but controls it's growth. It is prescribed to treat gastrointestinal tract infections. *Even though the amount of Tylosin in Angel Eyes is small, I would never use it*long term. It is meant to use short term to restore the balance between the good and bad bacterias. When that happens, the red yeast dies, and no more tear stains. Dogs with yeast smell terrible and they often itch like crazy. I can understand someone may not want to use an over the counter product like Angel Eyes, but hopefully if you notice red yeast, you'll seek treatment for your dog. It's harder to see the presence of yeast on a Yorkie's darker fur, but it's sure easy to see on a white dog. Most come home from the puppy mills with at least half their coats stained brown. Its so sad to see.*

| Reesie (my pup) was on kibble before he came to me and he had red tears stains/eye gunk. I switched him over to raw and now he just has clear sleepy eye goop which I clean every morning. Snickers (my adult) had tears stains all the time, on all kibble and again, once I changed him over to a full raw diet, he only now has the clear eye goop in the morning. IMO--food has a ton to do w/ it. Yorkies are known for their leaky eyes, so you just have to stay on top if it w/ cleaning. I tried Angel Eyes for a while on Snick while he was on Acana kibble (a top notch food) and it did help, I was just not comfy giving him a low dose of antibiotics daily. I want my boys to be as natural as possible. Viv

| Vivian, I think you are correct. I too am beginning to think that diet has alot to do with red yeast / tear stains.

I wonder if someone not wanting to go raw, if adding a digestive enzyme suppliment might help?

| My boys are on a premade frozen raw which I thaw and serve, it's balanced and just a fabulous food in my opinion, they LOVE to eat and get so excited for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I believe Jenn (Alicetheyorkie) feeds a prey model diet which means she gets her meat from a butcher (correct me if I'm wrong Jenn-saw some of your other threads) and she figures out the balancing. The only treats are give are dehydrated raw treats also made by Primal. Here is their webiste: Primal Pet Foods: Wholesome Raw Food for Dogs and Cats It is not the cheapest way to go...but we can afford it and feel it's the best for our boys. ![]() Viv
