Wow 15 vets say she'll be fine, how do they know without doing x-rays? Please listen to Mardelin, she knows more than those vets do about whelping yorkies, and find a vet who is a repo-specialist. The vet at Pet Smart sounds like an idiot, what if she needs a cesarean? Best of luck! |
Buster had to have anesthesia for his hernia surgery and neutering when he was only 2 months old and 2 lbs. He then also had to be put under for his baby canine teeth to be removed at 8 months and LP surgery at 15 months. So while anesthesia is serious business so is whelping. I am sorry you and Bee are having to go through this. I would consult with a vet who is more experienced with smaller breeds. |
I would get another opinion... I really wouldn't trust a Petsmart vet for breeding/litter advice. I would trust Mary waaaaaaaaaaaaaay before a Petsmart vet. She knows what she is doing. :thumbup: A c-section is a real possibility and she would have to be put under anyway, plus all the extra risks that go along with the pregnancy... If it were my pup, I would be seeking another opinion and getting her spayed now. |
i agree with most of the others i would find a vet willing to do an emergency spay and at least protect little Bee from having to try and whelp pups that big. i would sure hate for anything to happen to her little self and it could be very very life threatening for her. a spay is MUCH MUCH safer IMHO. good luck and please do not beat yourself up for this matter. you didn't know and you wouldn't have done this on purpose we know that. go find you a good vet that is okay with spaying her now before the pups grow too big to have it done. she'll do fine in the spay don't let the risks scare you out of it. the risks of whelp far outweigh the spay. my pup was only about 3lbs when she was spayed and did just fine. i've seen them spay as little as a pound dog in our pet hospital and it woke up like nothing ever happened. good luck sweetie!! we love you and hope it all goes ok. let us know what you find out and decide. |

Just wanted to add... My Peyton is right now at the vet hospital because he hurt his leg. He hurt his leg because I made a very stupid decision to place him on a chair, he is too young to know to sit still like Sophia knows. I totally beat myself up and felt so much guilt...still do. On my thread someone said something that really struck home with me. It was Boopster who said, "Accidents happen to even the most careful people. It's how we respond to them that shows what we are made of." That statement along with so many others has really comforted me. We are here for you. I feel bad that you are so upset. Rosie was spayed and she is only 5 1/2 pounds. She did great! No problems at all. I was afraid to let her have babies. I know you must be torn on what to do. Hope you find the right answers soon!! |
I finally got the courage to have my 3 lb. Yorkie spayed years back and she did great but I understand your worry about the anesthesia. If it were me, I would be even more worried about such a small female trying to carry and even whelp such potentially large puppies. What if she just had one very, very large one? I would get her to a reputable second vet for another opinion as to whether or not she isn't at great risk with this pregnancy. |
My little guy was 2.2 lbs when he was put under anesthesia. I was a nervous wreck till I saw him. He literally acted as though nothing had happened when I picked him up. I wouldn't worry too much about her being put under anesthesia and emergency spayed. Your dog can handle it! You really have to think real hard if you want her to go through whelping puppies that may be too big and chance losing her. What I have learned on YT is that the breeders here...............know more than my vet about breeding and whelping these tiny dogs!!! I know nothing about breeding, but listen to the breeders - they truly are experts! |

awww Lauren please don't beat yourself up about what happened....however any Vet that says its safe for a 5 lb yorkie to welp up to a 30 pound sire's babies is nutso!!! Bee is in much more danger trying to have those babies than to get an emergency spay....C-sections are very very costly...and sounds like she would absolutely have to have one in order to deliver the pups...I'd definitely get a second opinion....And I would trust Mardelin's advice over any Pet smart employee's opinion. Good luck and please let us know what you find out...and how you plan to proceed from here....Isn't Bee only a year old? She's so young. You know we're here to help and support you...sometimes the best and safest decision for your baby is not always the easiest thing to do, but her life could seriously be put at risk if you allow her to continue with the pregnancy. |
