1 Attachment(s) I'm not convinced about the eye shine thing. This is a picture of Nicco at 12 weeks and his eye is clearly shining blue-green, but he is cottony coated. |
From the peanut gallery here:me. My schnorkie (mini schnauzer/yorkie hybrid) has definate green eye shine. He has more schnauzer traits than yorkie and genetically speaking from his DNA test result is more schnauzer than yorkie- his coat is the funkiest thing ever, each hair literally has three to four colors on it. He has the double schnauzer coat a down under coat and a wiry top coat...but his "wiry" top coat is actually silky to the touch, cool and shines on the long hairs...very unnatural to the schnauzer coat it superficially appears like. Now I know I just told you about a hybrid dog which confuses it all but from what I also read it's more like an indicative trait not a guaranteed rule...but eye shine is part of judging in dog shows...so I looked it up a bit last night and I found this link to be extremely helpful in facts and unbias, I'm not so sure about the overall site itself though. DNA Test CGurl, Which Brand of DNA Test did you use ? |
Dog DNA Test Doggie DNA Testing and Mixed Breed Canine DNA Testing For Dogs - Dog-DNA.com My vet offered it done through this company, and did the test in their office. I was pleased with them as a choice, they have a pretty comprehensive list of identifiable breeds and the vet said a good reputation, but the accuracy of them isn't a guarantee and I'm not sure the legality or legal acceptance of their results...but I was comfortable with the results as it coincided with the vet's thoughts, rescue's assessment of his breed...ironically my dog is a hybrid (50/50 mix) but the DNA test results (I'd have to check the paper to tell you the exact %) said he is over 60% schnauzer DNA and like 40 or less Yorkie...as it identified breed markers and such...they send a cute lil certificate I used to have framed and on my dining room wall next to my other dog's AKC pedigree parent's pics in her history frame. It's more of something I did knowing I cannot fully reply on, but I wanted to do it...the more people that do so-especially through their vet the more research done in this area and the more we see advances in dog DNA...and it was so cute to me to get "papers" on my pound/rescue dog... DNA Test CGurl, Interesting, thanks for the Link, I didn't read through it all the way, but I will tomorrow. I did mine through Mars Insights, and sent me a certificate of Ancestry as well. You can take a look at it at... http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg88/SWHouston_bucket/SneakersDNA.jpg and as you, I have a Paper Trail which compliments those results. There's been a lot of bad press on the accuracy of Test like these, but, so far, anyone who has brought that up to me, has not offered any empirical evidence in support of anything beyond heresay. I've always thought, that a lot of the dissension about accuracy, was probably started because someone didn't want anybody checking up on what they sold. At some point in time, these naysayers are going to have to admit that Technology Rules, and print out some RMA's. |
I agree, and am checking out the info you presented, I think I might do another at some point with another company and the same company again to verify my own lil result study-I've too much time on my hands right now for hobby stuff! ;) All the test did for us was confirm suspicions, of hypothesis. I really hope we see a lot more in the way of advancement personally. I'm not sure if the company my vet used was 'the best', she said it was at that time though, maybe to the general public it was, but that was a couple years ago, and even in that time the changes and advancements in this field have been vast. Unfortunately some of these companies are kind of fly by night, or jumping on the band wagon and it's important people check the identifiable breeds listed and the reputation of the company itself...there was an independent blind labs study that disproved many companies results that many "naysayers" readily site...but the blind part of the sudy was breeders bringing in their dogs they "guarenteed" were of specific ancestry...and again its like any other product on the market, errors happen and there are vast differences in quality depending on the company creating the product and doing the testing. I was amazed to see the AKC trusts the results from certain companies in parentage associated issues, and DNA testing for genetic research. Quote:

DNA Test CGurl, You're aware that there are "Standard" and "Advanced" Test ? I'm sorry but I don't have a Link for the Advanced, but I'll try to look that up and Post it/or them, I think there's several. IF I had not confirmed the Test with the Paperwork, I might have just done (as you proposed) another confirming Test. MY thought being, everything checks out, I'll stop here. The Insights list for $70, and I happened across a Test at a local store on sale for $50. HA, I hope you know what you're getting into $$$ ! :D |
Eye shine - When I do get one from Rizzo it's gold, which from what I've read is a combination coat which makes sense. It's thin, lays mostly flat but tangles like crazy. And Rizzo was 3.5 lbs at 14 weeks and has pretty much leveled off at 5 lbs at 14 months old. Some hit a growth spurt and then stop growing, I was expecting him to get to 7lbs+ but, alas, he stopped. Tall and thin. Your little guy is adorable, I love his big ears! |
Oh send it when you find it! It'll go on my "the list"... It cost a little more when I had it done through the vet  we did the "extended linage" I think it was called at the time...I beleive...I'm sitting here wondering where I put it-we repained the living, dinning kitchen area and I took everything down and out of frames (went with a black photo wall and black frames so pictures "pop" plus there's two solar tubes above making it super light there) hmmmmm...as for $$$ Getting into $$$ HA, I wish! Actually lost my business a couple years ago now  and have been finishing my degree. I do the odd freelancing, but I'm budgeted big time now, I saves & splurges! :D No more designer good for me-its very sad... Lots of do-it-yourself projects here-most of our remodel but we both have construction experience, oh! my latest: bought a 'new bike for me' to ride with the kids & 'the boy' and take the dogs...craig's list $40 needed to sand blast and repaint it to what I wanted, new seat, shiny bell (an original 1950's Sears Speed Coaster-instead of the $200+ new version I wanted)-saw a user on here-with a bike just like mine-with a front mounted large dog basket copying them-$60 for the basket,BIKE BASKET FRONT - XTRA LARGE but I used my kid's trailer from when they were little for the longest time before. I eBay a lot too buying/selling so I can still afford to buy local fair trade items. We want our dogs to do agility saving on the course and doggy daycare member fees so we are copying another YT-er's self made course, and building our own on the side of the house-my son actually saw the pics and freaked out it was like what he saw on the dog show-investing in pvc and some plywood, her directions on how to were free on here too-my son's the cutest little "handler" can't wait to post pics on here in the Spring! Feed Taste of the Wild here, buy the Frontline Plus for Extra Large dogs from Costco and measure and dose it on mine- ! Then after all that budgeting I can spend on a few things I might not otherwise be able to fit into our budget. I have kids...and dogs...I just spend what little I have all on them. My kids are lil 'trenders', but also...I was just saying to the CPA, "seriously can't I use my dog's as dependents too...did you see what I spent last year on them?" He said I wasn't the only one who had asked that before...but no.  I've actually saved a small fortune on here-grooming tips for do-it- yourself saving on that quite a bit now-copying the ideas of other YT-ers...hope it's considered the greatest form of flattery:)...and buying a few things from Yters who sell below my local retail prices-well and I'm all about fair trade and local and independent small business people etc. though. :yorkietal Quote:

Thats crazy that Rizzo leveled off at 5 lbs at a little over a year.. I could believe that in the smaller dogs.. Eltons always running so i'm positive he'll be thin. He doesn't really slow down often.. :) I kind of like his one ear up and the other down.. It just adds to his personality.. Fits him... |

Why It's obvious that this breeder is only wanting money and doesn't care about the puppies. She had already spent your money after 3 weeks and refused to pay you back in cash, only with another puppy also is a red flag. Sue her butt in Small Claims court and make her pay you back and stay away from her. |
