New Yorkie Questions - 4 lb pup at 10 weeks? 2 Attachment(s) Hi and thanks for everyone taking the time to help me with this question. I'm picking up my yorkie this afternoon. I was told he was going to be small, however yesterday got an email saying that he's already 4 lbs 4 oz and is only supposed to be around 10 weeks old. His mom was 4.5 lbs and his dad was 2.5 lbs. I'm wondering if this is normal? I know standard yorkies are around 7 lbs full grown and this guys already 4 lbs 4 oz at 10 weeks which makes me think he's going to be quite the big guy full grown. I've had a yorkie before and I got him at 10 weeks old and wasn't even 1 lb. Same mom as this guy. However he passed away 3 weeks after I got him. We had an autopsy done on him because it wasn't expected. He didn't act sick. The report said he had a oversized heart. I'm just somewhat worried that this guy is already as big as his mom and quite young still.. Any thoughts? The two pictures I received aren't the same dog. I'm driving 3 hours on a hunch that maybe the breeder didn't want to give me this dog. They said the pup was born sooner than they expected because the mom didn't look pregnant and also that he was the only puppy.. Is it possible that at 10 weeks he could have gained so much weight? I'm going to check the puppy out and look in his mouth to see if he still has his baby teeth and if there's any discoloration on his back teeth. Any thoughts or concerns? Thanks! Also I added the first picture I received of him and also the second. Attachment 338260 Attachment 338261 |
I don't think it's that unusual, my yorkie is 10 weeks and 3.1 lbs. Some are just bigger. Good luck getting your answers! Hopefully everything is okay with this pup! |
Its possible that the pictures are the same puppy. Just a more grown up version on the second one. They change rapidly in the first few weeks of life. (both pics have the big ears I love. :D) Ear set is different in those pics tho?? I am not sure if the ear set can change as they grow, am sure someone else will have the answer to that. From my understanding even tiny dogs, can throw big ones now and then. Good luck to you!!!! |
check out the sizing charts... I think it is triple what they weight at 8 weeks and double at 12 weeks... but check to be sure. also, if your other puppy had an enlarged heart (so sorry for you) I am not sure I would want a puppy from the same breeder. Is this a replacement? Was the defect a genetic fault? Be careful, does not sound like you really trust the breeder. I am proud that you are not saying you don't want the puppy if large.. smaller puppies do have more health issues. Good luck |
4 pounds at 10 weeks will make about a 10 pound Yorkie..I am not saying it is impossible for a set of parents as small as you were told to produce a huge puppy...but I do not trust the breeder at all. Have you spoken to the breeders vet for a reference..also I would not paid more then $400 for a 10 pounder. |
If he was the only pup it is common for him to be bigger. 4lbs is a good weight at that age (you should wait until he is 12 weeks to bring him home, 10 weeks is too young). The first pup should never have been away from its mother if it was only 1lb. Good breeders would wait until the pup was atleast 12 weeks old and weighing atleast 3lbs. Your little one may be on the larger side but will probably be healthier for it. |

Also forgot to mention - Monday she told me he was going to be little around 4 lbs full grown and Thursday she happened to tell me he was already 4 lbs. So he went from "going to be little" monday to "already 4.4" on Thursday.. |
I hope you can get this all figured out. My Izzy came to me at 11 weeks old and a little less than than 4lbs....she is now 10lbs. My Harley was 5lbs. at 8 weeks and he is now 23lbs. |
I would think the vet record would clear things up. As a breeder, I took my bitch to the vet for an after whelp check and shot..so there is a record of the bitche whelping...who sheis and how many. Then I took a stool sample at 6 weeks..then at 8 weeks the pups got a well puppy check...and at 12 weeks if I was selling a pup, it went to the vet for a 12 shot..(I gave earlier ones) and well puppy check. If this breeder has no records of her pups and adults seeing the vet, I would be very concerned.. No way I believe these parents produce this pup..possible, but so very unlikely. |

Hi Billings....I live South of Missoula...so sorry to hear your first pup passed away....If you are wanting a standard yorkie...you won't be getting it with this pup....already 4 lbs+ at ten weeks...it will most likely be over 8lbs full grown.. I hope you get it sorted out...please keep us posted... |
