Sorrry I just reread your post and was wondering how are they monitoring him if no one is there. My mistake if no one is going to be there I would request to bring him home. I am curious as to how they monitor without being there. With Buster they had vet tech's there 24 hours. All my best to Oliver and his mom for a quick recovery.

I just went through this Monday with Buddy. We got him there at 8am. Yes were were nervous wrecks. At 10am they called and said surgery was a success. Told us that we could pick him up between 4:30 and 6pm. Make sure you pick your Yorkie up that day or, find a new vet!!!

As for the post surgury, when we picked him up he was very groggy. Unlike his normal self which was hopping around in the car from front to back and every which way in between, he was doped up. Natalie drove and I had Buddy in my lap. He was pretty much out of it. Later that night he was alert, but not moving much. I mentioned in my other post, I went to pick him up and he cried. It was a soft little cry so I put him down. We made a place for him in between us, but soon I put him in my lap. He slept and I just pet him for hours while we watched a few programs on tv.

At bed time we got him on the bed and he moved a few times until he found his spot and slept fine. The next day he was still moving slowly, but by mid day he was moving around and eating. By night, he was good ole Buddy again. Today we went on 2 walks and he's just about back to normal.

I know each dog will deal with this differently so just be there for him and he should be fine. My thoughts are with you!

I agree with the others... TELL them you will be picking him up that evening. I would not stand for my baby to be all alone in a hospital after such a big surgery. Both of mine came home the same evening and did great.

Good luck!

Default He comes home

I agree with the others to bring him home since there isn't anyone there in the evening. What's the point? There is no pleading - he's your dog. If the vet doesn't like it find another vet. I live in Northern VA and use the Belle Haven Animal Medical Centre in Alexandria for my little boy. Had his neutering and teeth done there.

When our Nicco was neutered it was outpatient surgery and he did not stay overnight. In first thing in the morning and out late that afternoon. I was sooo nervous as well and was on pins and needles because they are so little and you worry about the anesthesia. We also assumed he would come home with some sort of cone or whatever so that he couldn't get to the surgical area to lick, but no, the vet said it wasn't necessary. We had planned for his recovery to take several days. Crazy as it sounds, but the time the anesthesia wore off it was like nothing happened. We tried to keep him quiet and not jump, but he just acted like his normal self. He played and jumped and ran and ate, etc. and really needed no recovery time at all. Hope your little guy does as well!

Yes I spoke with my Vet this morning in regards to his neuter tomorrow and told them that since no one would be monitoring him overnight that I felt it best he come home with me. They agreed and asked me to bring him back in the morning just for a follow up to make sure everything is ok and I of course agreed

Thank you so much for your kind words and letting me know what to expect! Sounds like he'll be just fine and back to his old self by the time the weekend ends I'll sure be a nervous wreck tomorrow though! Keep us in your prayers!!

I'm glad the vet is concerned enough to check on him the following morning. I am sure he will be fine. Probably better than you!

Excellent news on bringing him home. Here's an update on Buddy. Today is 48 hours since surgery. This morning when we woke, he went outside, came in and was his old spry self. Later when I was dressing for work and sitting on the bed to put on my socks, he jumped up there to sit with me(it's a pillow top so pretty tall bed). I'd say he's back to himself.

The key is to be very attentive when you pick him up Friday afternoon. If you can get someone to drive you in their car to get him, he'll be very appreciative to lay in your lap on the way home. He'll be sore that night but should feel much better Saturday.

Good luck!

Glad to hear Buddy is doing great and his surgery went well!!

Yeah I plan on having my BF drive me to go pick up Oliver, I'm sure he'll do great! I'm als soo relieved to hear that he should be back to his old self again within 48 hours but I will definitely stay super attentive to him. I'll let you know how he does!

Mosh is also getting neutered, on Monday! I'm so nervous and I'm also feeling a little guilty Aside from the groomers, I have never dropped him off anywhere! I just feel bad for him. But on the plus side, I was told that I can pick him up the same night, so I'm planning on just giving him extra hugs when he gets home

My Bentley was neutered last Friday. Dropped him off at 8 am and picked him up at 5:30 pm. He didn't have any teeth pulled. They sent him home with a collar that was too big. I put it on him that night to sleep and he took it right off, so I didn't use it. It was the weekend so I just carefully watched him so he wouldn't lick the incision. I let him sleep with me over the weekend. Early Monday morning about 3 am I put him in his crate because he was moving around. Between 3 and 6 he licked his incision site and came open a bit. Took him to the vet that morning and they gave him antibiotics because it was infected. The vet said the sutures are inside and they just close the outer skin with some kind of super glue type stuff. I got a smaller cone and thought it was all good and he would be healed by Friday. Yesterday while at work, he found a way to lick the incision site with the cone on! This has been a nightmare trying to get it to heal! I put the bigger cone back on and he hasn't tried to take it off. I felt sorry for him trying to sleep in it so I cut 2 holes in a sock for his legs and put that on him like underwear last night. He took that off in the night so I made a better one today. I'll just be glad when the stupid thing heals....it was the tiniest little incision!
