Oliver will be neutered this Friday!

Hey everyone! Oliver finally has his appointment to be neutered this Friday and I'm sooo nervous!! I've already taken half a week off next week so that I can be with him 24/7, but I wanted to ask those who have had their pups neutered how I should prepare? I'm dropping him off at his Vet's at 7:00 AM and, despite my pleading with them that I'd like to pick him up that evening, they want him to stay over night and they'll let me know when to come get him the following day :( Is that typical? I asked if anyone would be there overnight and they said no but that they will be monitoring him and that this is routine and they do it all the time. I love Oliver's Vet and trust her 100% so I'm sure he'll be fine...

My other question is, Oliver is used to sleeping in bed with me however with having stitches I'm terrified of him jumping off the bed during the night (which isn't high at all) and hurting himself. Do they typically put little cones on the pups so they can't bite at their stiches? I ask this because I'd like to crate him at night just so I know he's safe, but I don't know if its ok to crate them while they have those things on?

Also, are the stitches the desolvable kind that will go away eventually or will I have to take him back to get them removed? I'll be asking the Vet all these questions, I just like to be educated prior to taking him in. He'll also be having any remaining baby teeth pulled as well, does this cause him much pain afterwards??

I'm completely new at this and want to be fully prepared for anything and everything! Sorry for being such a worry wort, I just hate the thought of my little 3 1/2 pound dog going under anesthesia! I'll feel much better when he's home and under my care :) Thanks so much for your help!!

I don't have any advice. My Remy will be getting neutered soon also. I just wanted to wish little Oliver good luck! Will be sending prayers that everything goes great and he will be home soon with his mommy!:)

Hi, both of my boys came home after being neutered. They were dropped off in the early AM and picked up around 4 PM. I would ask if there is staff there during the night because if there is not, then I would take him home. He will be tired after for a day or so and both of mine had to wear the e-collar to prevent licking of the surgical site. They both did fine. I just kept them quiet. They did sleep with us as usual but we have stairs up to our bed. I would crate him if you think he might jump. If he needs to wear the e collar, he needs it even in the crate :)
Stitches are dissolvable.
Teddy had a bunch of baby teeth removed and he was on some pain meds they sent him home with but he was fine and ate and such.
Dont worry about the anesthesia, it is very safe! Barney was 3 lbs. when neutered and only 12 weeks old because back I was not told to wait.

Oliver will do great!

If there is no staff member there I don't see a reason that you shouldn't be able to pick him up in the evening.
For the e-collar I attached it to a cat collar with a bell so I could hear him moving around...but I'm a light sleeper which made it easy for me to know that Rizzo was on the move. Lucky for me though, he is a total wimp and won't jump off furniture, though he does jump on and off my couches which aren't too high up. But he won't jump off my bed...or at least he hasn't and doesn't seem to want to .
Don't forget to ask about pain meds for the few days after the surgery. Most don't need them but they'll be good to have just in case.

Good luck, don't worry yourself too much :)

Thanks so much! I'm much more relieved :) That was a great idea as well in using a cat collar with a bell so I can hear him. Thanks again!!

An ecollar can be used and they can be crated with it. He should not be allowed to sleep on a bed because jumping can cause damage. Could put your mattress on the floor if you really want to be with him...

His mouth with be a bit sore. Not a huge deal though.

After anesthesia and pain meds which both can cause reactions, and with a new incision, and possibly an IV line, it is not safe for him to be there overnight. It's done around here too, but I can't imagine it being forced. There is always the chance to take to an ER for overnight supervision. Well, all spays and neuters are sent home same day here anyway. If there are complications, the dog would go to the ER. It is just not a good idea to leave them alone. If there is a reaction to a med or something, he will be alone.

Aww see that scares me, they said I should receive a call between 12 and 2 the next day which seems awfully late to me! I'm not a very forceful person but I just might have to put my foot down on this one and plead with them to allow me to take him home that evening. Thanks for the information :)

You don't have to plead. It's your baby. I'm not forceful either, but when it comes to my dog I am and her vet understands that I'm only like b/c I care.

There is absolutely no reason why he would need to stay until 2 the next day. My girl had a spay, liver biopsy, and dental all in the same day and came home about 4 hours after waking up.

Good luck Oliver

Good Luck Oliver and Kelly. When Buster had his LP surgery I got a great Kiss e Cone from Hot Rod's Mom. Not only did he look stylish but it was very comfortable. Buster stayed overnight as well to make sure he recovered from the anesthesia and to be monitored. It would be difficult to have to rush Oliver back if a complication arose. Not that one will but just in case.:) YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community

Sammy Mommy 02-16-2011 12:10 PM

I'll be thinking of you both on Friday!! He'll be fine - you will be a nervous wreck!:D When Sammy came home after surgery he was a little droopy. I had to block off the living room so he couldn't jump on the furniture. Then he was back to his old self again. I don't remember if he had stitches, he probably did because he had surgery for an obstruction and they neutered him at the same time.

ldcox29 02-16-2011 12:38 PM

Ruby just had her spay last Tuesday and I was able to take her home around 5:30. She also had four baby teeth pulled and a cleaning. She always sleeps with us, but I was afraid of her getting hurt so she slept in her crate next to me. She was so exhausted that she didn't complain. She didn't get the dissolvable stitches, she'll have hers removed Friday.

Good luck, sending positive thoughts!!

You sound just like me:D I was scared to death to have my Jax neutered....they wanted him to stay all night also. I trust my vet completely too but did not see the point in having him stay if there wouldn't be anyone there with him. They did let me bring him home that night. He was a bit woozy but he still slept with us in bed. He didn't eat anything at all that first night. He was good as new in the morning....he never even acted like he was in any pain at all. He also had 4 baby teeth removed as well. His sutures dissolved on their own. I probably overreacted but I was so worried the whole day and he did great. I know little Oliver will too:aimeeyork

My little Oliver did end up sleeping with me the night he got the surgery, mainly because he didn't react so well to the anesthesia, so I did not want to move the poor guy from the bed to his crate. He ended up wetting the bed though, which he never has done! I cried when I picked him up, because I had never seen him so drugged up and sluggish. He didn't even wake up when the vet handed him to me! So, be prepared! He did end up waking a little bit later that night, and the next day, he was fine. We did buy the Bitter Apple stuff to spray on him, but he barely tried to lick himself.

I agree with Crystal - don't plead. You tell them you will be picking him up before they close Friday, you don't ask. I'm also not normally a forceful person either but when it's in the best interest of one of my pups - and this definitely is in Oliver's best interest - I am not hesitant to speak up and insist on being heard. If there isn't going to be anyone there overnight then he needs to be at home where you can watch him.

Sending prayers for a quick recovery for little Oliver! :)
