| Brush Biter How on earth do you teach your dog to let you brush him? My Nikko attacks the brush every time I try to comb him. He won't stay still and tries to bite the handle. The last time I took him for a haircut the groomer wound up giving him a buzz cut because of all the mats he had. I felt totally responsible but I can't brush him properly if he keeps attacking the brush. What do I do to make him stop? I don't want to forcibly hold him down, that would only make him fearful. I know he is just being playful but sometimes it can get frustrating. Any advice? |

| i know the feeling.. try this: put a treat in your hand, a hard one, place the puppy on a table and let him try to get the treat out of your fingers, as his doing that, comb his hair real fast until he's done and give him another one until your done.. well thats how i do it... mybe someone else has a better way...

| That's about all I can manage with Nikko too. I may get a few brush strokes on the back but that's it!! I even stop and let him chew on the handle a little bit, hoping this will calm him down a bit. I think my poor boy is destined for buzz cuts for the rest of his furry days. |

| This may sound really stupid...but Chester snarls and growles at the brush. Tries to bite it, tries to escape, tries everything he can to intimidate the brush. So I tried comb. And he doesn't mind it (as much). I just use a ton of Ice on Ice and go s-l-o-w-l-y!!! Sometimes I do have to cut out the matted parts, but lucky for me he has a lot of hair, so when I do cut mats out, I cut the under part of the hair and the top lays over it. It doesn't show unless you really look for it or if he turns upside down. I think he hated the sound of the brush going thru his hair. I used to use one of those slicker brushes that made a scratchy noise. (If you've ever used one, you'll know the sound) He LOVES the top of his head brushed tho. Good luck. Suz

| Have a chew toy for him to chew on while you brush. The more often you do it the better he will get believe me I have one that hates to be brushed also. My dog hides under the chair when he sees the brush.

| I usually wait until Maddie gets close to being asleep - she's far easier to distract. She still tries to bite at her comb and brush though... I think they just need to get used to it.
