This may sound really stupid...but Chester snarls and growles at the brush. Tries to bite it, tries to escape, tries everything he can to intimidate the brush. So I tried comb. And he doesn't mind it (as much). I just use a ton of Ice on Ice and go s-l-o-w-l-y!!! Sometimes I do have to cut out the matted parts, but lucky for me he has a lot of hair, so when I do cut mats out, I cut the under part of the hair and the top lays over it. It doesn't show unless you really look for it or if he turns upside down. I think he hated the sound of the brush going thru his hair. I used to use one of those slicker brushes that made a scratchy noise. (If you've ever used one, you'll know the sound)

He LOVES the top of his head brushed tho. Good luck.
