Need Expert Yorkie Opinion
 

Hello,
I purchased a Yorkshire Terrier puppy from a breeder in January, 2011. But, I think my Yorkie looks a bit atypical, unless this is normal when yorkie's are puppies. She provided me with a CKC registration for my puppy. But, I am a bit skeptical of whether my puppy is really a purebred. I could use some help from an expert please!

I have upload some photos of my puppy who is 12 weeks. I just took the pictures today. Does she look like a Yorkshire Terrier? Is it normal for Yorkies to have black masks as puppies?

Im no expert , sorry , but he/ she sure is beautiful. The colouring is lovely..xx

Looking at the pictures she is just adorable. She does look like she is yorkie and I think she is a real cutie. I am glad to see she has a wonderful home. Enjoy her and love her for many years she is a doll. Susan

Can you tell us the breeders name?

With CKC registration it is possible to be a mix. (If that is the Continental Kennel Club and not Canadian Kennel Club)


But whether your baby is purebred or not she is beautiful:)

It is my opinion with 36 plus yrs breeding/showing your adorable puppy is NOT a purebred Yorkie.
If you paid a small puppy price for her, then I would not be upset..if you paid a purebred Yorkie price, then that is another story. Buying from any breeder is a matter of going to someone well known and ethcial...someone who has established a reputation for breeding the best to produce the best so buyers will not beasking this very question you have asked...no buyer should look at their puppy and wonder if it is the breed they bought...even at 8 or 12 weeks..

That is interesting. My pup looked just like that at 5 weeks old when I first saw the dog and gave a deposit on her. But, at 8 weeks she looked very different-similar to the pictures of her now at 12 weeks. I wonder if the breeder switched the dog on me??

She doesn't look like a 'typical' Yorkie pup at that age, but she is a beauty. It looks like she's going from black to brown on her saddle, which isn't the norm. I wouldn't want to say she's a mix just by looking at a few pics, though. She could have been bred from an off-colored parent. Did you happen to see the parents? If she is a mix, I couldn't say what she may be mixed with.

She is a lovely little girl though, and I hope she brings you much happiness. One thing I do notice.....her ears need trimming. If you get the hair off her ears, they'll likely stand up over time.

Thank you for your reply. Her name is Nibbler. I am getting a Wisdom Panel done to know if she is mixed or not. Sure, I can start trimming her ear fur. How do I go about that? Just grasp the hair and trim it with scissors? At what age should her ears be standing up? Thank you for the tip.

I think she's a beauty, but she reminds me a lot of the border terriers they show on "Monarch of the Glen."

Yeah, I'll have to say she's not purebred. Besides the coloring being off she looks a little big, especially the ears and snout. The coat looks a bit coarse, too, but it's harder to tell in a picture.

But she's gorgeous! She looks like a big goofball.

I'd have to agree with the others. While your puppy is absolutely adorable, there's no way she's pure Yorkie.

I use a pair of small blunt tip scissors, but many people will just get a cheap beard trimmer and do the ears. You can trim the top and bottom face of the ears with the trimmer but need to use scissors to do the edges. The trimmer can nick the edges. To trim with a beard trimmer, just hold the ear out, put a couple of fingers on the side you're not trimming so the ear stays flat and trim off the hair. Do this to both sides. With ears that are not standing, go all the way to the base of the ear. There is a contour on the rear of the ear that can get snagged so be careful in that area. Find it before you start trimming. It will look like a little flap a little up from the base.

You'll need to repeat this every week or two until the ears firm up and stand. Some may need to be taped or braced in some other way if trimming alone doesn't do it. At this age, though, just go with trimming for now. The standard 'maintenance trim' for a Yorkie is to trim the hair on the top third of the ear, but that is for later.....after you've got them up.

Some ears stand very early and some later.....some won't stand no matter what. Nibbler's ears look like they will stand with some work on your part. Don't be discouraged if you get them up and they re-flop. That can be due to teething. For certain, though, they won't stand if you don't keep the hair off them.

Thank you so much for the information. My pup's ears seem pretty big for her face. I don't know if she'll be as cute with them up? But, I am thinking about doing the ear trimming with a beard trimmer, since I don't own any blunt scissors.

^^If you do use scissors for the edges, exercise caution and work in very bright sunlight so that you can clearly see the edge of the ear flap through the hair. You can also wet the hair along the edge to make the ear flap more visible, taking care not to get any water in the ear canal. I also like to slightly pinch the edge of the ear flap between my fingers to prevent accidents.

A Wahl Peanut trimmer is a great tool. They are available at some Sally beauty supply stores and on Amazon for about the same price as a decent mustache trimmer.

By the way, AWESOME name. Futurama fan???

Hi, I'm no expert, but she does not look like a purebread Yorkie to me. Her snout looks different and her ears. She looks like she has a wondeful personality in the pictures. You're going to enjoy her whether she's 100% Yorkie or not, a little Yorkie goes a long way to making a wonderful dog. Enjoy her with all of your heart and put your brain to rest.

Nibbler is a cutie :) I really wouldn't want to say if she was 100% Yorkie but she is 100% adorable :D You will have to let us know what you find out after you do the testing. As for those ears by Doodlebug has some big ears too. They stand perfectly and they couldn't be any cuter. Welcome to YT and congratulations on your new puppy.

She is so cute! I'm glad you are keeping her despite of her not being purebred Yorkie.

LOL, yes. That is where we first heard the name. We liked it a lot and picked it out before we took her home. But, we soon realized how much she lived up to the name! She loves chewing on things. I am training her she isn't allowed to have shoes or cords under our desk. She's starting to get it. I am providing many substitutes (her toys).

But, she remains extremely excited about tissue. I don't like it though as she shreds up pieces everywhere and its not healthy for her. I keep her under a close eye and always take away the tissue or paper she manages to find.

Shes actually working on a bone and has been the last 45 minutes as I write this lol.
