Senior Yorkie Talker | So jealous I am so jealous of the owners that can go for a walk with their dog and pass another dog w/o chaos happening. Bentley and I walk past a dog and all heck breaks loose. Meanwhile the dog we pass is usually not phased at all or is looking at us like we're crazy. Not to mention the owner thinks I'm the worst owner ever. We have been working on this in our training and passed our first class only bc there were no distractions. In this more advanced class there will be more distractions including dogs. I'm at a loss as to what to do. The trainer has said when he starts barking and freaking out to simply turn and walk the other direction until he calms down then turn and try again. Well, I'm sure that works for bigger dogs but when I turn and try to walk away Bentley is light enough to just walk backwards and bark the whole way. He is so good with the rest of his training but this is killing us. I can't take a walk with him w/o constantly being worried that we will pass another dog. I have another dog that does the same thing. He's much older and I'm sure that's where Bentley learned this horrible habit. To be honest I'm very embarassed. I see owners walking a calm dog and I'm so so jealous. How do they do that? Are they just lucky? Uggghhhh.....! SO jealous! |

| It sounds like you are taking the right steps to get Bentley trained, I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. Bentley is a Terrier and they are very stubborn ~ Trust me I am still working on potty training, and my Pnut is 3 years old! I would just work with him more. Everyday you should work with him, I am not sure "how" but if you look in the "training threads" I'm sure you will be able to find something..Or you can post your question there. Good luck! Just keep up with the training and I'm sure he will catch on soon! |

| it takes time. Keep on training and socializing. The full distraction class will really help. When we are out with the Large Mastiff and Yorkie, we let the kids pet the large dog. The small one does not care for kids....go figure. THe new Yorkie seems to like everyone. |

| I have one of each: Teddy can pass any dog, Max picks and chooses. I worked hard on socializing him, but there are some dogs we cannot safely meet. Max has decided that the dogs we cannot meet must be a threat and must be barked at. The turning around doesn't help us because we would end up walking with the other dog. I know what you mean about trying to drag your Yorkie off the opposite direction. Max will sometimes walk backwards on his hind feet and bark until the other dog is out of sight.

| I hear ya My Zach does the same thing My Mike is perfectly fine with other dogs My Zach unfortunately is completely unreliable around other strange dogs and I never let him off leash when they are around I have had a trainer look at him and it comes from a number of things He was nipped by another yorkie when he was a pup Hear that? People who let their dogs roam? And the fact that he is a very sensitive little guy He reacts to everything sights sounds ... Everything It all comes down to me getting him accustomed to having other dogs iaround him Sometimes he is good other times..... Yikes
