| How many words/sentences does your baby know? Bailey has probably about a 25 word vocabulary and knows sentences. I try to teach him a new word once every 2 weeks. I thought this was so neat!!! Meet the dog who knows 1,022 words - TODAY Pets & Animals - TODAYshow.com

| I'll have to read that. I remember before I got my Standard Poodle I read a book called "The Intelligence of Dogs" and the author taught his dog a lot of words. He could say "go to the living room and find Kathy" and the dog would know which room and who to look for etc. It was very interesting.

| I bet Bailey knows more words than you think. My boys know too many. I have to be careful what I say around them. "Do you want" and "alright" makes them jump up because they think they are going to go somewhere. My favorites that they know are: pizza (they get parmesan cheese) sweet potato other side (when walking on leash) give me some loving blanket tshirt towel deck They always know where to go, which door or cabinet, etc, no matter what I say to them. Sometimes I ask if they want to go to the moon and I get a classic Yorkie head tilt.

| I personally believe that humans "dumb down dogs". Every dog i've ever owned, i've taught words and sentences. For example, I'll say i'm gonna go to bed or let's go to bed and he'll run upstairs and put himself to bed. He'll "herd" me up there if I take too long...LOL.

| I seriously have to change words and spell them backwords bc he learned how to spell certain words like "bone". You're right he probably knows more than I think. I too have to be very careful of what I say around him...LOL Quote:

| Isn't it crazy? They do learn how to spell. I agree with you about talking to dogs. My boys are both really good with phrases and sentences. I wish I could teach them specific tricks the way I teach them basic life routines.

| Haha I love this! Oliver is still learning a lot but he knows people very well. I can say "Where's daddy??" and he'll run to the door and look at me because he knows he's coming home from work soon or the BF will say "Mommy has a treat!" and he'll run to me in the kitchen because he knows where his treats are It's amazing what dogs can learn!

| No you're not crazy if you are you've got a whole bunch of crazies with you on this forum. My babies understand mostly everything we tell them but they respond most to "You wanna go out" and "when we say look what I have" Along with words like No Bite, Look who's here. |

| That's awesome! I totally agree -- dogs are WAY smarter than people give them credit for! Jackson knows wayyy too many words, it's ridiculous. He listens to me talking to other people and will try so hard to decipher what I'm trying to say. He perks up at a lot of words too. I'm not going to lie, I totally talk to my dog in English, LOL. I will tell him what we're about to do, like if we're going to the park with the dogs I dogsit, I'll say "First, we're going to go on a walk with Shadow, then we're going to the park with Ezekiel." And he turns his head on key words like 'walk' 'Shadow' 'park' and 'Ezekiel', haha. He totally knows what I'm talking about, I just know it. If you talk to them enough, they will figure it out. I've never really counted. I mean, I would guess he easily knows 100 or more, if including the tricks that he knows, and also little words and phrases like park, and different names and places, etc.

| lol, you know I was just thinking yesterday that there are more and more words that I'm having to spell because the dogs have learned what they mean. Its so funny. Never thought of counting them, but I bet its alot.

| Sammy knows quite a few words/sentences like - You hungry? You want to eat? You want to go out? Where your brothers? Where's your ball? Cookie, bed. He also knows when I've had enough of barking because I say to him in Italian, Saverio, basta!! and he stops. But I think it's just the tone of my voice. He doesn't know I'm saying, Sam, enough! (Or maybe he does know!) |

| Not sure how many words or phrases but they definitely understand quite a bit. We keep pads in hubbys garage as we have separate ones (daddy's and mommy's, lol) and when he goes out to smoke, he will take them out to potty. We just say, "let's go out to daddy's garage and they jump up. I usually am the one taking them out in the car so when we head out, I'll say, "mommy's garage" and they turn to go to mine. If we leave from the sunroom, "I'll say go out the sunroom" and they head to the back of the house. They know a lot of the typical trick stuff and things like go out and eat. I've also taught them to put harness on and take harness off. Clothes are harnesses too so it makes it easy to figure out I want to put on or take something off of them. I'm currently teaching them the word carrot as Hot Rod needs to slim down a few ounces so I've been giving them that for a treat instead. He comes tearing into the kitchen as he loves carrots. lol
