| Question about my new Baby Daliah Hey Guys, As some of you know I am adoption my friends yorkie, Daliah, well she is 3 years old. Her Mom Brianna, never had her spayed, she said that she has a Belly Button Hernia..? I am not sure what that means..or if it is more of a dangerous surgery. Not sure… Does anyone have any input on this? I have the best vet that I trust with everything! He neutered Pnut when he was 4 months and about 3 lbs… Daliah is about 3.5 lbs

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | An umbilical hernia is a gap in the muscle in the abdominal cavity with protrusion of some of the intestines. Some of the smaller ones may be out grown without treatment, so that could be why your friend was holding off on the spay. Otherwise, they are easily repaired the same time as the spay is done. There is a risk of leaving an umbilical hernia unrepaired, including strangulation of the protruding intestines. There is a increased risk of strangulation if the dog becomes pregnant with a non-repaired hernia. The extra pressure on the abdominal cavity can "push" more of the intestine through the opening and cut off the circulation. Strangulation is a surgical emergency.

| I looked it up. This is part of what it says about it. You'll want to read the whole article at the link I posted: Depending on the size of the opening, abdominal structures such as falciform fat or omentum can float into the opening. This generally does not cause a problem. However, if the opening is large enough, an intestinal loop can become trapped which can become a life-threatening problem. For this reason, it is recommended that larger hernias be closed after diagnosis. This is most often done concurrently with the spay or castration surgery. Umbilical Hernia in Dogs

| If you have a very good vet, then if it were me (I trust my vet), I would do it. Mine does tiny one's a lot. Plus, I would be very afraid of leaving a hernia. That's just my opinion.

| My girl was close 4 lbs and was also born with a hernia. I has her spayed at 7 mos and the hernia repaired. She did very well. For me there was no question of not have her spayed. Be absolutely sure they do pre-surgery blood work, no mater what the vet says...insist if necessary. At that point you have taken all precautions for a sucessful outcome. There's always a risk just like with humans, but to me the benefit outweighs the alternative.

| You sound like you've got a great vet. If this helps...my little girl was a little shy of 3.5 lbs when she got spayed...and she's doing fine. Good luck!

| I had Khloe spayed when she was 3.5 pounds and she did great. I think that if you trust your vet, you should get her spayed asap.

| Zoe was also born with a hernia. It was removed before we even got her and we had to bring her to the vet to get the stitches out. It was done way before she was spayed. I think she was about 3 1/2 lbs when we got her and about 14 weeks old. She did just fine. |

| I think she ended up going back to her original owner who realized she wanted her back.
