| Yorkie Puppy cries in exercise pen Hello Everyone! So my husband and I are having a hard time with our baby Gizmo. Hes 7 months and im home a lot right now waiting to start nursing school in the next few months. Anyways, I put Gizmo in his exercise pen with pee pad, toys and his crate when i am cleaning the house, or vacumming. Today i was putting together a TV stand so i put him in his pen. The whole hour he cried!! He is used to being in his pen because i put him in there when i go out and hes great. He doesnt cry when i leave our house. However, when im home and i put him in his pen he goes crazy! He has the highest pitched bark i have ever hurt. It hurts your ears he so loud. Any suggestions how to stop this behavior? When i go in the pen and play with him he stops crying. I am guessing hes just a little too attached? Thank u! Christina & Gizmo |

| Well, the answer is right there in your post!! Just like when a baby cries in their crib and you go an pick them up they know that all they have to do the next time is cry. Gizmo cries and you pick him up out of his playpen and he's won. When you respond to a puppy you always have to go in and get them when they are quiet. Then you will be rewarding quiet behavior, if you go in and pick them up even once when they are barking they will connect the barking with the response and it is much harder to break. He cried this time for 1 hour, next time it could be 2 hours!! The only other thing I would say is make sure he has something interesting to do in there while you are home doing something else. Then he will be fixated on this interesting toy instead of being bored and crying for mama. i would try a baby kong with some peanut butter in it or you can put treats and peanut butter. It keeps them occupied for atleast a hour and then they usually need a nap, so it can buy you more time. Good Luck, remember puppydom doesn't last forever!!

| You are so right Nanci. When we first got Oliver, who is 8 weeks old we picked him up everytime he cried and he was starting to get real spoiled. He got up about 3 times a night and wanted to play. We put a stop to picking him up and now he sleeps all night and when he gets up in the morning he plays with his toys until I get him. Oliver had been abandoned with his three sisters and we felt so bad for him. He was only 6 weeks old when we got him. The vet says picking him up everytime he cries is the worst thing you can go. |
