Well, the answer is right there in your post!! Just like when a baby cries in their crib and you go an pick them up they know that all they have to do the next time is cry. Gizmo cries and you pick him up out of his playpen and he's won. When you respond to a puppy you always have to go in and get them when they are quiet. Then you will be rewarding quiet behavior, if you go in and pick them up even once when they are barking they will connect the barking with the response and it is much harder to break. He cried this time for 1 hour, next time it could be 2 hours!! The only other thing I would say is make sure he has something interesting to do in there while you are home doing something else. Then he will be fixated on this interesting toy instead of being bored and crying for mama. i would try a baby kong with some peanut butter in it or you can put treats and peanut butter. It keeps them occupied for atleast a hour and then they usually need a nap, so it can buy you more time. Good Luck, remember puppydom doesn't last forever!!
