| Anyone have any good ideas? Ok, so Roxie and I were working on some basic tricks last night..lol..She can sit like a pro all day long, but when it comes to shake and lay down, etc. She wants nothing to do with it. For treats I give her those tiny liver Bil Jac treats, and she loves them. But she isnt catching on too quickly..lol..Any ideas to help her out? lol..

| I continue to battle this same problem with my boys. They are master sitters and it's hard to get them to do much else. They will do down, shake, kiss, stay, and come. I need tips too. |

| First, get her super excited! Jackson is the most motivated to learn when I first walk in the door, for example, because he's excited to see me, etc. Or I will get him all worked up... I know it sounds crazy but I'll get him to chase me thru the house for a minute, or get on the ground with him and start playing with him, etc... get him all riled up. Because if he's tired or not in the mood, he can be slooowww at doing his tricks. I like the way he "works" best when he's all hyped up. Use high pitched voices, etc. Also, use real meat! Bil Jacs aren't the healthiest but I do use them occasionally... but they don't motivate Jackson to learn a new trick. New tricks are taught with cheese (I buy those cheese sticks), chicken, steak, or some kind of real food. The only dog treats that he truly loves and motivate him are these: Amazon.com: Real Meat Beef Jerky Dog Treats: Home... Have you ever used a clicker? Jackson went from knowing 20 tricks to 40 within a few months time period after adding the clicker. He learned at double the speed. Bascially, the clicker is just your way of saying 'yes!' It's a more precise, clear signal that the dog did what you wanted them to do. For a video on clicker training, watch this: You've gotta be fun and exciting... and make them want to learn! My dads dog, Buddy is a Dachshund mix and he's pretty "duhhh" when it comes to learning new things but it just takes that extra effort to motivate him, because he's not easily motivated. I used to throw a treat to him, and he would let it smack him on the face LOL... with a little bit of practice, I would get him to watch the treat, and focus, and now he always catches the treat when I throw it... he always can sit pretty for hours now, ha, he's got a fat butt for good balance. But anyways, it's all about finding your dogs currency, aka her form of money! Every dog is different. Real meat is what gets Jackson to do, well, pretty much anything I want him do, lol. I could have never trained him half of the tricks he knows with just Bil Jac treats. Hope this helps a little!

| Let me know it goes! Once they catch on, it's alot easier. I think it's just the initial getting to that point. You'll know when that lightbulb goes off in their little head. If you have any other questions, let me know. I really have fun teaching tricks and have a few youtube channels that could be helpful kikopup, zakgeorge21, and a few more.

| At what age should you start teaching your puppy to sit? My puppy is 4 months old and I've had her for 2 weeks. I've been starting to teach her to sit, but she gets so excited when she knows I have a treat in my hand that she jumps up to my hand to get it (or searches in my lap for it). Any tricks? |

You can start training as early as you want. Here was Jackson at 5 months old. Ignore the repetitiveness of the video and doing same trick over and over, I was proud, he just learned it at the time, haha oh and he hadn't learned to fully roll over, lol

You can always use the word 'yes!' in replacement of a clicker. You can pick up a regular box clicker at Petsmart or any better store for .99 cents or so I don't think one is better than the other, it's all about your preference. I like to be able to put it around my wrist so that it's easy access. Btw, 'spin' is usually a pretty easy, yet adorable trick. Jackson picked that one up super fast and it's the trick I always teach the dogs I sit for. You just get them to follow the food in a circle.
