Personality Question Hi, I'm not sure if someone has already asked this question or not, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips for knowing how to pick out a yorkie puppy/dog with the personality you're looking for? I certainly wouldn't be disappointed if my puppy didn't have the personality I was looking for, please don't take this wrong. But both my husband and I love cuddlers/sweet dogs and if we get a furbaby, we'd love for it to love it too (I ask because my MIL has a yorkie who we have nicknamed "Rainman", ha. He's very sweet, but kind of... removed and doesn't care if he's close or near to any human, even my MIL. I guess the word would be: independent. The only time he cuddles with her is when he's hungry! lol.)

I think your breeder is your best link for that. When I got Beemer I wanted a somewhat laid back puppy to compliment Sadie. A good breeder knows her dogs and how their personalities are developing. I got exactly what I was looking for. A rescue, as well, would have insite into their personality through the foster home. With a shelter it would be somewhat of a crapshoot. The conditions make it so you can't truly see the personality till you get them home and better adjusted.

Thanks for the reply I've always been curious if there are tell-tale signs of certain personalities... I haven't done much research on it, YT seems to be my go-to for all my questions! I know there are things like if they hold eye contact or something but I haven't heard too much about it. I don't want dominant but I don't want completely submissive either, I think a good mixture of both will make one pleasant furbaby!

Before we got our Yorkie, I talked to a few people. One person at work does agility with little dogs. I told her we wanted passive rather than agressive. She told me to turn the dog on his back and see how he reacted. We weren't to hold him down, just turn him over and see how much he resisted. So we chose DInky over his sister because he was obviously less fiesty than she was. For a little over a week I was really concerned because he was so timid and shy. But he's fine now. I really don't know if it was necessary to turn him on his back to figure out that he was more passive than his sister. It was pretty obvious! I also have a friend who has very nice calm dogs, and she never picks the frisky, playful pup; she always chooses the ones who hang back. Good luck, and I bet you love the one you get to pieces!

| The breeder would be the best one to ask about that. They spend all their time with those puppies as they grow up, so they should have a pretty good idea about their personalities. Like, when we bought our golden retriever, the breeder met with us at least 3 times as the pups grew up to talk to us, find out what we are wanting in a dog, find out our lifestyle, watch us interact with the dogs, etc. and she directed us to the puppies that would be best suited for us. There were 9 (or 7) in the litter, so of course, there was an arrangement of personalities.

I don't think anyone can say for sure how a dog will turn out - Personality-wise. They're like kids, all one can do is guesstimate. I've stated before Carly was the "high maintenance" pup and is now the mellow, laid back dog and Gracie was the mellow laid back pup and within a day or two of coming home, away from her domineering siblings, she came into her own...no laid back dog now!. If I based 'personality' on Gracie's pups' current behavior (8 weeks) are: one sturdy & extra playful, yet calm will make someone who likes to take walks a great dog. the next one is very laid back and would make someone who is laid back a great dog, always listening, taking cues, the girl that we are keeping I'm predicting "high-maintenance" -- already has a "pick me first" attitude--- could I say any of this with complete assurance? No. They will be what they will be: darn nice Yorkies! hope whoever buys the boys will keep in touch and let me know how they turn out. Kendra
