| Oh dear, poor baby. If in your shoes, knowing that little girl's past, I wouldn't want to cage her up either. Let's see.... When training Kaji not to mark, he wouldn't care for treats either. But that meant being on "hawk duty" literally being just one step behind him. I did a double clap correction, which I don't think you'd want to do with your little girl. But you can pick her up, and put her on the right potty spot. Even a little bit of pee deserves celebration. I would bend down, scratch Kaji's ears, give him kisses, and in the most excited voice I could muster tell him what a good boy he was. No treats involved (he didn't care for them at first). We would even dance around, but I bet my neighbors thought I was nuts!

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | when i took morgan to puppy class they were teaching how to get your puppy to walk next to you on a leash. you were supposed to hold a treat in front of their nose to get them to walk with you. well this one little chihuahua wouldn't walk for anything. the trainer tried every treat imaginable. nothing worked. the next week, the person with the chihuahua said she found something to get her pup to walk. it was a lollipop. LOL now i don't condone sugary treats for our pups but i just thought it was funny because no other treat (dog or human) would work

| Honestly, I could not pad train Apple, for all the tea in China...I think it's because although you can clean up the "spot", you can really never get the total scent out (they can smell it, but maybe you can't), because of the carpet pad...After a year, I pulled up the carpet, put down laminate, started taking her outside, and within a week, she was housebroken...I don't like the bad weather, either, but if it's raining, she goes out and stays right under the eave, and comes right back in...However, you've got lots of good advice, about pad training, and I wish you all the best! |

| What I did with my baby, that worked well (mind you he's not a rescue so there may be a few differences) is hallway confinement. My hall connects every part of the apartment (in my old place we had when he was a puppy). I bought a big enough crate so that it blocked one end of the hall, and that was his bed. (like we're talking 3x3 crate). I closed it at night, but I don't see why you have to do that if you don't want them in the crate closed, it could just be designed as a bed with 3 walls. I liked it cause the crate faced my livingroom, so if I couldn't supervise. Harley could curl up in his bed at the end of the crate and watch momma. Then I had a gate that I put at whatever door was open. It worked super well, now the crate is his bed, he never is closed in one unless we're traveling. And for the most part he's potty trained. (I use a grid system, but you could definitely just put a puppy pad in the hallway). The good thing about the hallway was it was adjustable. It was an 11x3 hallway. so we started with the crate far in, like 6x3 and as he got better we moved it more and more. Now in our new place he has his own room, his crate is his bed (I even took the door off), and he as of tomorrow will have full access to the rest of the house. Best of luck. I used some aspects of the crate training theory, but at the end of the day, it can definitely be done without a crate.

| I am in the same boat, I finally started putting the pee pads in the exact spot/s that Happy was peeing on...lo and behold, the past two days he used them! it seems the kitchen is the place of his choosing, of course right in front of the sink isn't really conducive, but whatever works at this point, I will slowly move them inch by inch lol Happy is not food motivated either, I also took some of our other dogs urine and placed on the pad..nothing. I also understand what it is like to see a sad dog who doesn't even know what a toy is, Happy is like that as well. However, he is coming out of his shell by leaps and bounds, I hope the same happens for your baby |

| You guys have come through with so many wonderful ideas/options. Thank you so much. Brie is definitely my problem child on the potty training. Bridget is pretty simple. Whenever she gets down off the couch I put her in the small xpen and say our phrase (it's what I've used with all the girls, always), ""be a good girl"" and she immediately does her business. She wants no reward. I take her to get a drink and put her back on the couch and there she pretty much stays. Once in awhile she will get down with the pack and oddly she is okay with them as a group. But if she is in my or DH's lap and another dog approaches she is downright vicious with the possessiveness. I have to jerk her back and immediately cover her head. She doesn't see, she doesn't bully. She keeps it up I may have to find a tiny little burka that also covers the eyes and keep her in it. I'm just a bit at a loss as to how to amuse a dog that doesn't understand the concept of play or toys, so this is really a huge learning experience for me as well. Brie will watch the others play with a toy, but doesn't seem to watch with jealousy just watches like one would observe an oddity going down the street. Anyway, thank you so much for the support and suggestions, I'm utilizing so many of them and I will let you know which one or which combination of them works.

The others would play and he would watch or just lounge on the couch but not participate. Finally, we put the others up and coaxed him with a toy, but he just sat there staring at it like "What I am supposed to do with that?" Finally he did start playing with one on his own, but drops it if the others come over. He still hasn't gotten down the concept of playing with others, but slowly but surely he is starting and it been just over a year now. It just makes my heart so happy to see the little guy coming out of his shell. Best of luck to you!
