| Flying with Yorkie to Europe? My boyfriend and I are travelling to Germany for Christmas and New Year's and we are taking Simba with us. We will be flying first leg 4.25 hrs (SF-ATL), second leg 9.10 hrs (ATL-MUC). Has anyone here flewn this long with their dog? We have it confirmed with the airlines that he will be in the cabin with us and he is very good in the carrier but I know it's a long flight. Naturally, I wonder about bathroom issues. I saw that there are diapers for dogs so I am considering getting that. Should I get something from the vet to make him sleepy or do you guys think that's not a good idea? I hope the flight attendances will close on eye and have me take him out of his bag, but you never know. Thanks for all your replies, Anita |

| Anita- do you know of any special rules for taking the dog in and out of Germany? I am looking into taking Trixie with me for a two week vacation in the Netherlands this December. And so far all the info I have everything looks fine. But I'm afraid there's some kind of little rule that I haven't seen... I would love to hear advice from people too on confining your yorkie on long flights.

| Amspoelstra, For Germany I will need Simba to have a written health certificate from the vet, he has to be either tatooed or microchipped (there are microchips that work in the U.S. as well as Europe) and I need to provide proof of rabies vaccination. I will contact the German Embassy though just to be on the safe side so I would suggest for you to contact the Embassy for the Netherlands as well. I am also considering having the Health Certificate as well as the proof of rabies translated and certified into German- I know I may be paranoid but it would be just devastating if I arrived in Germany and they told me that I couldn't bring Simba with me. |

| Bender flew from Vienna to Florida about a month ago. He did surprisingly well without drugs I would attempt to potty between the flights, and bring a piddle pad or something in case he gets whiney. Then you can sneak him into the bathroom and let him walk around a bit and potty. Other than that, you'll be doing a lot of talking and soothing through a carrier most likely I stuck my fingers in every once in awhile, and it calmed Bender a lot. He was very good most of the flights, though he was really whiney on the up and down portions, I think the pressure change hurt him a little. |

Are there any rules for taking them back into the United States?

| We're going to Germany for Christmas, too! Maybe we should have a Yorkie Talk group meeting while we're there... Good luck with taking Simba and let us know how it all works out. We're leaving our little guys home this time, but I am curious about what it would be like to travel with them over there since Germany is so dog friendly!

| We are probably going to be taking our doggie to Japan next summer - that's going to be a 13-hour flight!! She's flown a lot domestically, so she knows what it's like, but that's a really long time to be on board. I know you're not supposed to let them out of the bag, but I imagine we'll be sneaking her into the bathroom when nobody's looking.... Should be an exciting trip for her, though! |
