Agree completely. Also be sure that when you place her in timeout, it's done quietly and calmly. When she is removed from her "timeout", don't look at or speak to her...start from the beginning, fresh start.

My sister had a great tip that she used on her papimo. She didn't want to use the crate for "time outs" when it came to biting because she didn't want her pup to associate being in the crate with being in trouble. She wanted the crate to be a positive experience, not a bad one. So, whenever she was playing with her puppy, she would make sure she had a laundry basket nearby. If puppy bit, my sister would yelp NO and immediately put the laundry basket upside down over the puppy and turn her back away from him or even walk away. she would wait about a minute and then return to playing. She said it worked absolute wonders because puppy associated biting with a quick end to the fun and being under the basket. I plan on using this method too. Hope that helps.

That is genius!!! It really does sound like a good method---the pup is safe, your hands/feet/face are safe, and the pup can still see you (to see how you don't like biting). I think this is a winner for sure

I think this might just be the winner! Goodluck I hope it works. I'll have to remember that if Harley needs timeout in the future.

I think the laundry basket idea sounds great also. With regard to the Bitter Apple, when Poppy is biting you can spray a tiny bit of the Bitter Apple in her mouth. I think if you did that a couple of times, she would learn very quickly. It sounds horrible, and I think I'd have a hard time doing it, but I don't think it could hurt her. My father and his wife rescued a long haired dachsund when they were vacationing in Mexico last year. They already had two fox terrier rescues, who are really challenging to train because they are true terriers. They were having trouble with jumping and barking with all three, so they hired a trainer. My father's wife is a huge animal lover and is involved in rescue. I know she'd never do anything to harm an animal and would only use a compassionate trainer. This solution worked very quickly. The trainer said Bitter Yuck works better than Bitter Apple. When they jumped or barked uncontrollably, they sprayed a small bit in the dog's mouth. I know I used Bitter Apple many years ago when my babies were puppies. It took Ashley longer than Kiwi and Gracie, but she kept taking the moss out of the silk trees that I had in my house. After the third time of jumping and grabbing the moss, she stopped because she hated the taste with the Bitter Apple. I would check with Poppy's doctor to make sure it couldn't harm her because of her size, but it might be an option. I hate punitive measures and prefer positive reinforcement, but this may solve the problem very quickly without doing something that could be scary for her. I know you'd never do anything to hurt Poppy, but I remember trying the method of shaking pennies in a can with my dogs to get them to stop a behavior. I wouldn't ever do that again because it just scared them and didn't work. I guess you can tell I'm a big softy, but I also know that you can't allow Poppy to keep on biting. She is absolutely gorgeous, and I know you love her. With an adorable face like hers, it must be very hard to resist anything she does.

Okay some people may not like this tactic but it worked for us. I had a bitter and younger children who were not doing anything wrong she would just bite and hang on. I was so frustrated so after trying all of the above suggestions someone told me to squirt her with water from a distance so she would not know where it was coming from, so she would just think that when she bite she would get squirted. so that is what we did. IT WORKED great. It did not hurt her. Funny she figured out it was coming from the squirt bottle now if I tell her no and she is not listening all I have to do it bring out the bottle and she stops. This would not be my first choice but if you are running out of options this does not hurt and they get it quickly

One of my trainers recommended that, too. The only problem I found with my doxie is that he was smart enough to look around for the squirt bottle before he did something he knew he wasn't supposed to be doing

I'm having the same issue with Fynnlie. He plays hard and bites hard. We 'YIP' at him and he stops for a while. Also, when he's playing and biting, he starts humping! He's 10 weeks old and I know that it's really young, but the breeder had some health issues (She got a STAPH infection in her back) and we had to pick him up sooner. He'll bite and play and bite some more. We'll 'YIP!' and he'll stop and then he'll start again or start humping! I dunno what to do. We start puppy classes tonight.

I think the humping thing, especially since it's correlated to this, is Fynnlie trying to tell you he is the boss. It's probably a dominance thing, and females do it also sometimes. I never went to puppy classes, but it sounds like fun and you'll probably learn a lot, too.
