If i hadnt come on here and got all the advice and support then i dunno if my Poppy would even be alive by now and if she was she would be very sick. I cant thank evenry one enough.... Genes, Beamers Mom and Mardelin are my litle shining stars :D I ask some stupid questions because i aint to bright lol but everyone here is always willing to help.... cant ask for anything more :D Just so happy my little girl is doing ok. I wil update everyone 2morrow when i get back from the vets :D xxx

You've had to endure something that no reputable breeder would ever put a new puppy owner through. I'm sorry that this has happened to you. But, your little girl is lucky to be out of that breeder's hands and in your arms.

Okay... where did you get her from?
I brought Poppy home a few days before she would turn 6 weeks old, I was told she would be 8 weeks on the date I could bring her home then later found out she was younger.
I was worried too.. she was so small she could fit in the palm of my hand!
The breeder we got her from was a friend but I didnt want to give her back because I was worried about how the breeder would care for her.
I kept Poppy and took her to the vets ASAP for a check up.
Poppy ate well.. I gave her winalot puppy (before I switched to Wainwrights) and Puppy milk from Morrisons. She LOVED the puppy milk and would drink it all, but she didnt touch her food much until I took the milk off her so I guess it was quite filling for her.
The vet told me I shouldnt be giving her puppy milk because she was already weaned and just to give her water which is what I have done ever since.
Just keep an eye on her.. make sure she is never alone for long because she is so small and keep an eye on her weight.
She will be due her first worming at 6 weeks and you will have to book her in for her first needle between 6-8 weeks old. (Poppy had hers at 8 weeks)
Stay calm.. to be honest Its best that shes with you then a breeder who would give her away so young.
You have everything you need.
Which vet are you using? I use Strachan Tyson and Hamilton.. they have a few branches and I find them fantastic. They really care about the pet and NOT the money.
Also can you PM me the breeder names of her parents and grandparents because the little star thing sounds VERY similar to my Poppy's.. Im sure one was little star something and the other little mischeif something or other...
Oh and yes that was me and my BF in Pets at Home with Poppy yesterday :)
PM me if you need to talk more.

EDIT: Ignore the little star things I read your posts wrong :)

furbutt 08-09-2010 04:00 AM

Thanks Rachel.

Poppy went to the vets today, i took her to another vets in my area as i did not like the way the other vets handled things yesterday and i felt very let down by them. So me and Poppy turned up at another good vets at 8.30am this morning and they where fully booked but after i told them everything the head nurse took me and poppy into a room to look over her and so Poppy could see the vet... they were lovely!

Poppy was checked over very thoroughly and i'm happy to say she is a HEALTHY puppy. I explained about how she was not eating and drinking and they gave me some special puppy food to try her with. She was very alert in the vets office and the vet came to check her over and said the same as the head nurse that Poppy was a very healthy little puppy, I was sooo happy!!

He was quite worried that she wasnt eating and told me to go back in a weeks time for another check up. But apart from that she is spot on. I know how much she should be eating per day now so i know to keep my eye on it. He cliped the ends off poppys claws because she couldnt walk on my carpet without her getting stuck. Now she can run around fine :)

When i brought her home she was running (well running as fast as she could for her) around my livingroom playing and wagging her tail. I put down some of the food the vets gave me and SHE ATE IT ALL!!! Ok it was just tablespoon full but she ate it :D :D :D So i put her milk out and she had a little drink of that too :D How clever is my little girl hehe!!!!

I feel soooo happy today! She is happy, healthy, feed and watered there is nothing i could want more. :D The vets also gave me some worming paste to give to her in a few days time. Oh and they weighed her and she weighed 1lb :D

Rachel i thought it was you at Pets at Home yesterday with your little Poppy but i looked such a mess i didnt want you seeing me looking like a state haha! I had just jumped in the car and drove to get a nursing bottle for my Poppy as i was so worried she wasnt eating. I did see your little Poppy tho she is so dam CUTE!!! :D

Thank you everyone for all the help the last few days xxxxx

Rachael x 08-09-2010 04:10 AM

Glad to hear she is doing well :) I know how scary it can be as I was in the same position myself.
Personally I think they they try and get rid of the pups before they have to pay for their first shot....
Anyway glad she is eating now :D I know what you mean about the nails, Poppy used to hop around my carpet like tigger LOL.
Does she weigh 1 pound? Thats a good weight if she does for her age.. Poppy weighed in at around 1 pound 3 oz at 10 weeks :)
How big is she compared to your hand? she looks bigger in her pics then my Poppy did and she sounds a really healthy weight.
Is she sleeping well at night?

furbutt 08-09-2010 04:26 AM

I think my breeders just wanted rid ASAP to get the £500 for her. Which is a shame because i paid a little extra for her than some adverts i had seen because i wanted to go with a breeder who knew what they where doing. Yeah she weighs 1lb what a little fatty she is hehe!! :D No the nights aint good but its only been 2 nights shes been here. She cries around 1pm and then has the odd whimper between times and then she cries again around 4pm. I am sure the more she settles in she will be ok.

Haha yeah Poppy was hoping around my livingroom before too, so i am glad she has had her nails cut :D She is sleeping at the moment, she is such a llittle cutie :D xxx

Rachael x 08-09-2010 04:33 AM

Its a shame things turned out the way they did.. especially when you paid £500 for her, thats a lot for a yorkie here and you would expect a little more from the breeder.. unfortunatley thats not always the case though. :(
She sounds like a really healthy weight :)
Poppy was like that for the first few nights too.. she would go to sleep around 9/10pm, wake up crying about 1am, then again about 3am then again around 6am for her breakfast.
Now she is much better and she will sleep all the way through the night without a peep.. only time she cries is when I wake up and I go to change her water but thats just because she wants out of her pen :)
Does she sleep in your bedroom?

furbutt 08-09-2010 04:46 AM

Yeah she sleep next to my bed in her play pen lol. If she cries i put my hand down in to her xpen and talk to her. I am going to try and stop that a little tonight tho so she knows she cant just cry and get me to comfort her, she needs to learn she can be by herself during the night. I am sure she will be ok. I go back to work on wednesday, how was your Poppy when you first went back to work? xxx

Rachael x 08-09-2010 04:50 AM

I know your not suposed to give them attention when they cry in the night but I couldnt help it, her crying just broke my heart and I had to cuddle her.
Im lucky that she dosnt cry for attention now though and she sleeps really well.
She was fine when I first went back to work, she will cry when I first leave for a little bit but it dosnt last long and she just goes to sleep.
I dont start work till 11am though and I still live with my parents who work different shifts so Poppy is never alone for longer then 3 hours at a time :)

furbutt 08-09-2010 05:05 AM

Yeah i work from 9 - 5 i work 2mins away from where a live so i leave the house at like 3mins to 9 haha. I will be home on my lunch hour 12 -1 and then my OH is on his lunch 1-2 as he works 2mins away also. So Poppy will never be left alone for no longer than 3 hours. PLus she would only be left like this 4days a week as i am off weekends and my OH is off a day during the week so i think she will be ok :D. xxx

Rachael x 08-09-2010 05:17 AM

That sounds fine :) Im sure she will settle in nicely.

JERSEY BOY 08-09-2010 05:18 AM

Soooo glad your little Poppy is doing well today. I think the 2 Poppies are going to be best friends!!:)

You need to get a car...... take the puppy back to the breeder...... and demand a full cash refund immediately or you will file a complaint with the local authorities that this breeder is not following proper rules in regard to age of puppies he/she is selling.....

You will have nothing but trouble with this puppy being sold at this age.

Of course you won't do this.............. you'll just complain when you have excessive vet bills.

Now tell me, could you take a pup back to a breeder once you've had it in your home? You've already fallen in love with it. Amazing that you would even suggest this. However, I do agree that the breeder should be reported.

Furbutt has not complained, only asked assistance in keeping this pup alive.

You don't know if this pup will continue to have problems.......

Pixie Girl 08-09-2010 07:24 AM

Whoever this John Stetling is doesn't need to give advise like that. Beamer, RachaelX and other are giving great advice to Natasha. I'm no expert, but the advise that they are giving is alot more helpful than yours. Read all of the posting before you comment.

Natasha, I'm so happy that your Poppy is going alot better and that the Vet has confirm things for you. You are a GREAT MOM and Poppy is doing wonderful.

Pixie sends puppy licks and myself hugs.:littleang:good job:

Hazelzmibaybee 08-09-2010 08:15 AM

i'm so glad shes healthy!!! now lets keep our fingers crossed for Hazel ! ! !

Tell me where she has complained about vet bills? She hasnt because the vet said the pup was healthy.
I would love to know which kind of crystal ball you are using to predict the future of her puppy! Just because she has the puppy young does not guarentee that it will have lots of expensive vet bills and be nothing but trouble.
Plenty of people have problem dogs with expensive vet bills when they take them home 12 weeks +
In England its common for pups to go home at this age, but according to your crystal ball we must all have sick dogs who are nothing but bother to us no?

Furbutt came on here asking for advice on how to care for such a young pup. She is fully prepared with everything she needs for this pup which is more then can be said for some owners on YT.
If you cant or wont help her then why are you here?

EDIT: Just to say I dont condone the breeder giving the pup so young at all, but in England it is very common - this dosnt make it right though because we know its better for them to stay with their mum longer :)

I would not complain about vet bills for Poppy as i understand that i could have taken her back to the breeder and demanded my money back but would that really be the best option for her... or for me? I thought about her before i thought about the money i had paid out on her. I feel like if i took Poppy back to the breeder she would only be sold on to someone else who does not have the help and support from the people here. I feel like she is in best hands with me, I have tried everything in my power to make sure Poppy is a happy healthy little puppy and the vet confirmed this today.

I do agree that the breeders are very wrong to let her go this early and i have made a complaint to the RSPCA and reported them. I hope to hear back from this soon and will update everyone on here.

As for the excessive vet bills, i maybe young buy i think ANYONE who has taken the responsibility in buying a puppy/dog needs to be aware that anything can go wrong to the best of the breeds out there and its always a factor that needs to be addressed before looking at getting a puppy. The what ''if'' how would be support ourselves during this if the vet bills did mount up. Thankfully i have a good job and would be able to support myself and cover my vet bills but for safety I will be using petplan to insure my little Poppy.

Rachael x 08-09-2010 08:37 AM

Of course she is better off with you.
I was in the same situation and didnt want to give my pup back to someone who would give her away so young, if they do that then how do you know they will care for her properly?
She is in the best place with you, you have everything you need for her.
John obviously hasnt bothered to read the thread.

ls1smith 08-09-2010 08:38 AM

I am just now seeing this thread and I am so glad to hear that Poppy is getting along so well. My first Yorkie came home at 6 weeks. At the time I had no idea that was too young. She weighed 1.8 lbs at the time. She is now 14 years old! Hang in there. It sounds like Poppy is going to fine with all of the wonderful love and attention you are giving her. Keep posting, I look forward to following her progress!

Thank you hun :)

Poppy has just ate more food on her own and been playing around the livingroom. She seems full of beans today :D :D :D I am just so happy after the vet visit i cant stop smiling.

OH and i forgot to mention that last night she did a poop :D weird that i am so happy about a poop haha! xxx

How dare you assume things you don't know! Natasha has never complained about the money - only that she didn't have the fee for the emergency charge after spending over £800 in a couple of days on this puppy. Sure, she takes Poppy back to the breeder to be resold to someone who may not be as responsible as Natasha.

Just because there are problems at this moment because of the puppys age is no indication that there will be future problems.
FYI I took in a 2 week old Lhasa puppy from a breeder that the breeder told me probably wasn't going to live through the night, the mother was ignoring her and had several puppies and not enough milk for them all. I begged to take the Lhasa home with me to see what I could do for it. The breeder reluctantly agreed. I had the vet come to my home, he didn't think the puppy was going to make it. I nursed that puppy for over a week, sitting up at night with her, feeding her with a syringe.
The puppy lived to be 14 years old and the only vet bills I had after the initial care were her check ups and shots.
Obviously you would have told me that I would have nothing but trouble with her and should have left her with the breeder to die!

While I am sure Natasha welcomes all advice on here, I am sure yours is advice she should ignore.

I thought someone posted earlier that is was actually illegal to sell pups at 5 weeks old. Not trying to start something, I'm seriously curious. I do not think it should be "usual" for pups of any breed to leave their mom at 5 weeks old.

It sounds like Poppy is adjusting & doing well. Eating more is a great sign!

Breeding and Sale of Dogs (Welfare) Act 1999
Breeders who breed four or more litters per year must be licensed by their local authority. Breeders with fewer litters must also be licensed if they are carrying out a business of breeding dogs for sale.
Licensed breeders must:
a) Not mate a bitch less than 12 months old.
b) Not whelp more than six litters from a bitch.
c) Not whelp two litters within a 12 month period from the same bitch.
d) Keep accurate records.
e) Not sell a puppy until it is at least eight weeks of age, other than to a keeper of a licensed pet shop
or Scottish rearing establishment.

This is from the KC website.. Thing is though no all breeders here are licensed.
Some are hobby breeders who just dont bother to get a license or some litters are 'acidental' :(
This is where it comes common (usually 6 weeks more then 5).
Over here pups are weaned at about 4 weeks and once they are eating dog food they go to new homes, I know its not right and I agree it shouldnt be common but unfortunatley it is.

EDIT: Oh and just to answer your origional question yes it is illegal but unfortunatley still happends.

Yes, it is in violation of the Animal Welfare Act - unfortunately a lot of BYB's don't even know about the Act, or just chose to ignore it.

Unless puppy purchasers report it, these breeders will continue to operate outside the law.

The KC has several other more stringent laws being put into place.

EarthAngel 08-09-2010 10:05 AM

Just wanted to say I am happy to hear Poppy is eating and has had a clean bill of health! She is with Natasha who to me is the best Mom she can have. Try not to listen to people who come onto a post and voice negative things. If or when you want to report the breeder is your business. I am thrilled Poppy is doing so well and for you too. Bet you are having a wonderful time with her now that she is eating, drinking and playing!!
